STEAL THIS TRACK: GUNS N’ ROSES CHINESE DEMOCRACY LEAK, DAY 3 – “THERE WAS A TIME” A.K.A. “TWAT”

A friend once commented to me that one of the things he really loved about Guns N’ Roses was their ability to take a three minute song and turn it into a six minute song- that “Paradise City,” for example, contains a seemingly endless amount of soloing that stretches out the running time while avoiding ever becoming mundane.
Well, that friend should leave “There Was A Time.” Nearly half of its almost seven minute running time is solos either by Robin Finck (first two solos) or Buckethead (outro solo)- and it might be both guitar players’ finest hours where they really give Slash a run for his money. When I first heard about this song in Rolling Stone way back in 1999, I assumed that any song Axl was jokingly referring to as “TWAT” would be hard n’ heavy- but this is actually another epic track, densely layered and constantly shifting between harder-edged rock and more emotional power balladry. The band has only performed this song live once, which is too bad- it is truly excellent.

Excellent? really? I can’t join ya on this man. Axl is pushing for the notes, and his melody is tired and far to reminiscent of his earlier work. The whole song is what I expected from this band; A half assed version of the greatness it was.

There was a Time. How appropriate. There was a time GNR didn’t suck. They do now. Anyone who’s claiming otherwise is just in denial. This song was bloody awful.
i think its good! im not in denial, im just not comparing it to guns from the 90’s. this is pure rock! i own all of guns old stuff, and ive seen them twice. this sounds like a song from a very good hard rock guitar band! bands today sound like kids with guitars. rock music of today all sounds like some college kids picked up some guitars and learned a few chords then wrote songs from the few crappy chords they can play. todays bands dont have the talent to write good quality rock songs, its just all power chords today. this is a good song from a realy good band! velvet revolvers songs suck! slashes best years are behind him. duff said this next VR album is the best they have. if it sucks like the last one then we know where the talent is.

this a Guns record. If this is what we can expect from the rest of Chinese

First of all: Velvet Revolver vs. GNR in 2007? Velvet Revolver hands down. Chinese democ. sucks compared to the velvet revolver album. Axle no longer has the voice that he once had. As far as rock and roll goes… there is better out there way better. Axle needs to get back on cocain and put some more balls into his rock-n-roll. THIS ALBUM IS GOING TO BE A ROCK N ROLL CASTROPHE TO ALL!
Elkins, you have no idea what you’re talking about it. Axl still has it and then some. This is far more interesting and flat out better than anything VR has done. Their music is uninspired and unoriginal. This is the sound of a band challenging itself and making great music.
