THE F**KING CHAMPS @ STUDIO B, 6/5/2007

130

The Fucking ChampsSo I actually hauled my ass out to the nether regions of Greenpoint, Brooklyn last night to see the double-guitar (sometimes triple!), no-bass, no-vocals trio known as The Fucking Champs (see my previous post about the band). The Champs didn’t disappoint — these highly talented musicians play complicated music, and the live show actually sounded better than their recordings. This band isn’t for everyone — if you can’t listen to music that doesn’t have vocals, you won’t like the Champs, but if you love guitar harmonies you will be  basking in the twin-lead glory all night long. A highlight of the set, in fact, was when the drummer came out from behind the kit and donned his guitar to play a spectacular song of orgasmic three-part guitar harmony goodness. Fittingly, it’s guitar player dudes that love this kind of music, and that’s exactly who populated the audience. There were actually some pretty cute girls at the show, all undoubtedly girlfriends of guitar players, and all of them looking extremely bored. The crowd was decidedly un-metal (I was literally the ONLY dude to throw metal horns in the air between songs. Pathetic.), more of a kind of hipster-guitar set; but who gives a shit when you’ve got music as interesting as what the Champs play? The band could use a little more in the way of stage dynamics — they literally just stood there most of the time — but at just under an hour, the set length kept things from getting boring. If the Champs hit your city this time around, I’d definitely recommend checking them out.
