SURPRISE, SURPRISE: THE NEW METALLICA SONG SUCKS

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007 at 11:05am by

Metallica really, really, REALLY want you to like their new album, which is set to drop sometime in 2008. They’re going around the world, playing their masterpiece Master of Puppets in its entirety, showing off how Scott Ian thinks their new material is cool and features “the attitude and conviction of the old school,” and every once in awhile tossing a new song into their setlist, like this one, which was played a couple of weeks back at a festival in Bilbao, Spain.

Unfortunately, the song sounds like a sequel to Suck Anger.

What do you guys think?

It’s time to retire the phrases “old school” and “new school”.

Sounds nothing like Anger. Oh, it sucks, but not Anger suck level.

I HATED St. Anger, so this doesn’t sound that bad. The guitar riff could be pretty cool. Of course James sounds like shit, but he always does live. I would want to hear it recorded.

Vocals are terrible, but I like the song live. Live Metallica always gives off an energy that’s lacking on disc since the early 90′s. Live Metallica can even make a few St. Anger tracks sound good. But, this same song recorded on disc with Hetfield’s polished vocals will sound as equally as bad as St Anger.

It’s pretty shit. They should just go back to trying to make their songs complicated for the sake of it, it seemed to work (I mean, Master of Puppets is one of the best metal albums around), which is something I can’t say about their non-thrash material.

This song sucks. If they hadn’t introduced it with “the second new song”, I would have thought it was Misfits cover. The first tune wasn’t too bad though.

    Umm…

This was first played LAST year, and Rob has stated recently that both of the “new” songs won’t make it on the new album.

With the exception of one concert in Spain, playing Puppets in it’s entirety was done LAST year. Nice to see a metal site on top of things.

    (sigh)

Very suprised they released this. It’s obviously a mixed soundboard recording. Why would they release this? I think the song idea is decent. James had a really rough vocal performance, and no one in metallica ever could sing back up vocals except for Newsted. Reminds me of Garage Days rerevisited.

Scott Ian likes it. That should tell you everything. If an East Coast rocker thinks it’s cool, it’s not, because HE is not.

Scott Ian hasn’t been a part of anything great for over 20 years. Too Bad, he rocked back in the day.
