BACK WHEN PANTERA WAS A HAIR METAL BAND…

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007 at 11:06am by Vince Neilstein

The Glam Mistress Allyson over at Bring Back Glam! has reminded us of a truth that we so often selectively forget: Pantera got their start as a poofy-haired, spandex-wearing glam metal band. And by “start” I don’t just mean teenage garage-band days; I mean four full-length albums (!), the first three with original lead singer Terry Glaze. What would all the meatheads who chant “Dimebag! Dimebag!” at every metal concert these days say if they knew their slain hero pranced around the stage in videos like this one? I don’t know what’s better, Dimebag’s shiny silver spandex or the choreographed “wish I was Eddie” stage moves.

I’ve had the Power Metal album since it came out and while it has hair/glam elements, it’s still heavy as fuck (for the day).

  2. ERiK says:

never seen dimebag play a strat style guitar before.

  3. TedTedPoleyPoley says:

man, sounds a LOT like old school Def Lep (or as RJD says, “Def-fucking-who?”)

  4. Tag says:

    this song is pretty rad

I’m closing my eyes and plugging my ears. This never happened. :P

you know, I always got the feeling it was Phil that caused the band to get heavier and reject the glam past. Meanwhile Dime was pretty proud of his Ace Freeley tattoo. I also felt that the album with Phil wasn’t too glammy and had some great riffs. We’ll meet again is my standout, because it has the killer Dime style of licks that we worshipped on Floods.

  7. Eric says:

    lol, hair metal.

  8. Ken M says:

dimebag = a true goddamn legend.

  9. [...] what? You thought Pantera were the only ones? This video comes from the days when Norman Jean were known as “Luti-Kriss.” The vocals [...]

  10. Dr J says:

Despite the flamboyant gayness, thats chugging riff is still badass.

  11. Magpie says:

You know something? Yes, it’s glam. Yes, it’s a bit embarassing given the image that Pantera later adopted. But it sounds light years better than a lot of the glam bands that actually made it big.

This is “Savatage” level glam, rather than “Poison” level glam.
