COREY GLOVER HAS GOT SOME PIPES! ALL THAT REMAINS’ PHIL LABONTE DOES NOT.

Thanks to a semi-anonymous tipster / MetalSucks commenter close to the Living Colour camp, we’ve been made aware that the band has video of them performing “Cult of Persnality” from their recently released live DVD on their official MySpace page. One thing immediately apparent from the video — reposted below — is that Corey Glover can fucking SING his balls off (no disrespect to the other band members, all of whom are tremendously talented as well). He nails every note with barely any effort; and it’s the last song of the night to boot!

Compare this to a clip of Massachusetts metalcore outfit All That Remains performing the song “Six” which is also from a live DVD, which came out last week. Frontman Phil Labonte growls through the screaming parts just fine (as if this requires massive talent), but when he gets to the singing parts… oy vey. Dude should take a lesson from Corey Glover, or else undergo a reverse-Michael Jackson operation to make himself black.

“Cult of Personality” below, and All That Remains’ “Six” after the jump:

The other members of All That Remains are talented enough, but this example underscores one of the problems facing metalcore, and by extension all current genres of metal — the vocalists blow (yes, there are exceptions, Killswitch Engage’s Howard Jones being one — another black dude, coincidence?). They just don’t make singers like they used to.

Dude can sing! I love his voice and power.

  • Sammy

Yeah, Howard Jones can also seamlessly mesh aggressive and clean vocals (see? not mutually exclusive). Phil LaBonte has some real pitch issues.

  • Joe

I actually wish Howard Jones would use more aggresive vocals. As far as Phil Labonte? I like some of All that Remains, and apparently Phil was a finalist for the KE vocalist spot, but was beaten out by Howard Jones. The song six is a very fast song and I like it, but songs like Whispers kind of makes me wonder.

hmmm. in Phils defense, a night full of that back and forth is pretty damn hard. I am saddened to hear this though. He and I share the same vocal coach, the great Melissa Cross, and I have seen him do FAR better live. In fact, he is usually flawless. He and Howard are in my opinion 2 of the best in the world right now. Why they would release this, I do not know.

Saw ATR in april this year, i was actually kind of impressed by the whole band and especially PL’s singing… don’t know what happened to him since then, if the whole singing on the DVD is that awful…

Corey has always been one of my favorite vocalists. I’m surprised that his career as a solo artist never took off.

I always considered Phil an excellent vocalist… I’ll have to give that DVD a listen, I can’t hear the audio while I’m at work….

Maybe he’s more of a studio dude?

I think we’ve all seen good vocalists have bad nights… that being said, I didn’t think he was too bad, perhaps a bit flat (and I do have an ear for pitch). My suggestion would be to get your ass on stage and do better. As loud as bands like this play, it’s hard to hear the tone of your own voice, which is why they’re missing the pitch anyways (the growls are not as reliant on pitch). At least his voice sounds great on records, and not over-processed like you’ve mentioned Atreyu to be so many times before.
