Also, ya know, he’s getting up there in years). But for those who had tickets to the postponed shows that haven’t seen the reunited Van Halen yet, we feel for you; the show at Madison Square Garden last fall was one of the best we saw all year.
I saw them in Detroit. It was AWESOME. It was FUCKING AWESOME. I’ve never had such an immediate and visceral rush at a rock concert and I’m well into my thirties at this point. I felt like I was eight years old again, sitting in my room playing air guitar to Diver Down and Van Halen I. Every song that they played was a freaking goddamned certified motherfucking amazing out-of-the-fucking-ballpark hit!

I remember being in like, what -- forth or fifth grade when David Lee Roth left Van Halen at the time. Amongst my friends there was a constant controversy – with or without Dave – what side do you choose? At the time, I really did like the first Sammy Hagar/Van Halen album, “5150”.

Looking back, I can see that it marks a dramatic change in the band, one that really is more than a line in the sand. It’s a fucking forty foot wide moat filled with crocodiles and snakes. Eddie guitar tone changed for the worst and the schmatltz that is Mr. Hagar really took over as the defining musical influence. Certainly Sammy Hagar has proven himself a more capable modern pop song writer than David Lee Roth. Dave writes rock and blues. He doesn’t have Hagar’s gift of sweet melody. But ya know what? Fuck that shit, gimmie Dave any old day over that steaming pile of cotton candy.

I could quibble more about Anthony not being there, I could be snarky about Wolfgang Van Halen looking more scared than enthusiastic. But, hey – I wish I would have won that genetic lottery. I’m sure having crazy-ass Eddie as your dad has its downside, but it certainly has its upside in getting to play “Runnin’ With The Devil” in front of twenty thousand screaming fans. I got on my feet from the minute they hit the stage and didn’t sit down the entire night. Eddie's guitar tone was great. I think perhaps he might have paired it down to the basics as he was playing his Frankenstrat most of the night. The great thing about the staging of this tour is that it was very basic.

My favorite line that Dave said all night is something to the effect that we should all be in awe, because we were witnessing the worlds only real, and functional time machine. 88 miles per hour.

In terms of the OMG factor, I think the KISS shows in '96-'97 blew away VH. KISS played some places 3-4x and then came back again. VH is certainly selling well, but not THAT well.

a mini-blimp (and I mean an actual blimp, not Wolfgang Van Halen)

Ouch dude. That was uncalled-for.

Anyway. I've seen Van Hagar twice. Once after F.U.C.K. came out and once a few years later when they were touring in support of the live album (the very idea is so meta that it makes my head hurt.)

They rightly rocked both times.

In fact, the second time I saw them was by far the loudest concert I've ever attended. I'm pretty sure I can attribute the bulk of my hearing loss (which is substantial) to that one show.

AR, i'm impressed that you didn't you use "Fatty Ding Dongs" in the review at all, not even once. although "Michael Anthony being left out of the fold", was that pun intended? :-D

but in all seriousness, glad to hear the tour is still going pretty well. looks like they just added a Houston date, so i plan on going if the price isn't too atrocious!!

I'm so glad you boys had fun. I loved my tour stop. If they swing through the midwest again, I might have to buy another over-priced ticket.
