VIDEO: FALL OUT BOY PERFORMING PANTERA’S “WALK.” YES, YOU READ THAT CORRECTLY.

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007 at 10:28am by Vince Neilstein

I don’t even know where to begin with this. It could be the fact that Fall Out Boy is playing Pantera (albeit with Every Time I Die’s Keith Buckley — who has at least some metal cred — on vocals). It could be the voices of pre-adolescent children in the bacvkground. It could be that the band skipped the guitar solo. Has Dimebag-based rhetoric become so ubiquitous and marketable at this point that it’s acceptable for a teeny-bopper emo band to play Pantera live? Ten to one, no one in Fall Out Boy knew a note of Pantera before Dimebag’s death almost 3 years ago.

Somewhere Dimebag is rolling over in his grave. Or is he? On one hand, Fall out Boy — fucking FALL OUT FUCKING BOY — is butchering a Pantera song. But on the other hand, I guess it’s cool that kids who wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to Pantera are hearing it? Fuck it, all the kids are singing along and they clearly know the song — fuck this band, fuck them hard in the poo-holes. Fucking fuckity fuck fuck fuck.

And now the video in question, which according to Blabbermouth was filmed November 19 in Buffalo, New York at a secret Fall Out Boy show (they performed under the name Schrute Farms) at the Mohawk Place:

Can I get a collective sigh of “kids these days…”?

  1. Even the “Office” reference is lame (”Schrute Farms”)… like dudes who saw “Superbad” and think it’s actually funny and unique to walk around calling themselves “McLovin’.” Douche bags.

  2. Karel (Belgium) says:

This summer i accidentally saw Fall Out Boy at a festival, where they played a Michael Jackson-cover. That worked out better for them then butchering Pantera. Nevertheless, still hate this band.

  3. “all the kids are singing along and they clearly know the song”

I don’t know if they reaaaally know pantera.
in fact, they are only singing: “RE! SPECT! WALK! Are you talking to me?”

Is not that hard to get that after the band plays the first chorus…

  4. Eric says:

They aren’t playing the solo because they probably can’t learn it. FallOut Boy = fucking overrated bitchbags

  5. ERiK says:

Can any band cover a different Pantera song for once?

  6. Sammy says:

To be fair, it doesn’t sound any different than any of the other 1000 bands I’ve seen cover the song. And I’ve only seen one band attempt the solo. The bigger question, which has already been asked here, is why always this song? It’s not like Pantera ever had a true hit single. Why not cover Primal Concrete Sledge or Mouth For War?

Please to be answering the question why not show some original thinking?

  7. Hegster90 says:

^^Because walk is probably the easiest Pantera song ever. I mean the solo’s not even that difficult compared to his other stuff.

I really don’t mind it. In fact i have great appreciation for the irony of a pop band playing a metal song. It was all in good fun. They’re not going around proclaiming their love for Pantera. Keith was just in the ‘hood and they decided to have some fun. what’s so fucking wrong with that? I think i actually do recall Stump saying Walk was one of his favorite songs of all time in guitar world, right up there with some ABBA tune haha.

my impression of dickmetalheads’ reaction to this video:

“WHAT?!?! BLASPHEME!!! NO ONE CAN *EVER* PLAY A PANTERA SONG!!! NOT EVEN AVENGED SEVENFOLD, who perform it quite well, although i’ll never admit it…UGH!! A POP BAND PLAYING PANTERA!!! WHAT HAS THE WORLD COME TO WHEN A BAND CAN GO AROUND FREELY PERFORMING WHATEVER SONGS THEY PLEASE!??!?”

They should have included the solo though. If you can’t play the WHOLE song, then don’t fucking play it.

  8. Greasymetalhead says:

BAWWWWW! FALL OUT BOY SUCKS! I NEED TO SHOWER!

  9. SickSixSeth says:

i don’t think i’ll ever go to Mohawk Place again knowing that shit happened there. Yeah, I live in Buffalo. Fall Out Boy sucks dicks.

  10. TTquick says:

“Appreciate the irony”? How ’bout telling it like it is? This version plain sucks. I can appreciate the irony of you posting on this site. True irony would be Abba or Michael Jackson covering Pantera.

  11. Hegster90 says:

It does not suck, and in fact rocks for the sole reason that Keith Buckley was present and showing Fall Out Boy how it’s done. They wouldn’t have been able to do it on their own. I don’t get how you can say guitar sucks, because really it’s one of the simplest things Dime ever laid down…couldn’t hear the drums that wel…and honestly, who cares about bass. It would have actually been, dare i say, “good” if they had included (and accomplished) the solo. And speaking of appreciating irony, isn’t this site’s name just plain grand?

  12. Jethro_Knight says:

God, I feel stupider for listening to this HORRIBLE version. Wow…no guitar solo. Only furthers my believe that Fall Out Boy can’t play shit anything more then 2 or 3 chords. Ya know, that actually requires to play singular notes. Fuck these posers.

  13. Hibernum says:

No surprise about no solo. Dime has always had great feel that is hard to replicate, technicality aside. Really, who has tackled a Dime solo well? I can’t think of any examples.

As far as Fall Out Boy goes; well I guess it is cashing in on Guitar Hero’s popularity. Just like Alien Ant Farm before them cashed in on the 80’s atavism…

  15. maggot07 says:

having those pussies play one of the best metal songs of all time is a complete discrace to Pantera. usualy its an honor to have people want to remake a song of yours, but this is dispicable.

  16. Reverend says:

Fuck FOB. Fuck them until they die from it. ~spits~

  17. redd says:

I’m not gonna bitch about how they sucks and pantera rules and they shouldn’t cover this song, but this has to be said, no matter how many times it’s repeated. This sucked, don’t ever try it at home. Or you might end up in the next fall out boy.

  18. Justin says:

Fall Out Boy are nothing but big hairy tools. If I were to go on a shooting rampage, this band would be the first to go.

  19. Hegster90 says:

MY impression was pretty on cue, no?

  20. FBRCS says:

I think the attempt at covering it went fairly well… that solo is a bitch though, dont blame them for leaving it out lol.

And to the comment of not be able to play more than two to three chords, Joe and Patrick are quite talented guitarist I’ve seen them shred before and they can do a little more than the expected two chord power-pop ballads.

    Been a pleasure chatting,

  21. Nathan says:

Fucking hostile by in flames was alright at hammerfest :P

  22. Benguin says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t say the kids “clearly know the song.” There might be one or two people singing along for the whole thing, but pretty much the only time you hear the rest chime in is during the chorus. And it might just be the bad recording, but it seems to me like they leave out a whole line from the second verse.

While I do agree with one of the other commenters that we shouldn’t be such elitist pricks that we snub any attempt at a Pantera cover, I despise the use of Dimebag as a marketing tool or “instant metal cred.” Pantera is a damn good band, but that alone does not suddenly make you fucking metal.

… especially at a Fall Out Boy concert.

  23. GoddamnElectric says:

Damn that is fucking awesome. Call me impressed. I don’t think that’s a bad cover at all, it reminds me of my first metal show (Hellisher fyi). Any band that plays Pantera is okay by me, just think of how much better this part of the concert was than every other song they played that night. The more respect for Pantera, the better, I think they’re the best band ever.

  27. Sidric says:

    oh fucking dear!

  28. Kev says:

Dimebag Darrell (one of my personal heroes), made one of the most badass songs ever. And Fall out Boy had to ruin it.. This is WRONG! Fall out boy is the most gayest band in history. No questions asked, they have no musical talent what so ever…

  29. Jim says:

THIS IS A FUCKING DISGRACE TO THE GREATEST BAND ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH…

    FALL OUT WANK ARE CUNTS

  30. [...] Fall Out Boy covering Pantera, part deux: at a Warped Tour show this week, emo/pop/whatever tween sensations Gym Class Heroes played about a minute and a half of Lamb of God’s “Laid to Rest.” Somehow I think this actually might be kind of cool; everyone knows the chorus to “Walk” thanks to the corporate sodomization of Dimebag’s death, but Lamb of God? A bit more obscure, despite the Guitar Hero nod. Proof: the utter silence in the audience. Beautiful. Gym Class Heroes just earned some serious cred. [...]

  31. demuredin says:

In Flames covered Fucking Hostile and in my opinion made it sound even better than Pantera (crucify me..). So not every band covers Walk…Fall out boy…there’s no need to make fun of them, just listen to their music and they do a damn good job of making asses of themselves all by themselves.

Disarmonia Mundi do a pretty kickass cover of Mouth For War

  35. ina says:

I am impressed. They obviously did a great job. I don’t think people hate them covering this because of Fall out Boy themselves. Blame all those Mother Fucker Teenie fans. Fall Out Boy was only doing the instruments. Some other dude was singing. Which is clearly not Patrick Stump. I respect them for what they do. I mean we can’t stop them for covering the songs they want. We’re not God. Respect dude. I am not telling you to stop commenting like that, I mean I respect people having their own opinions. I never call a band crappy and gay. Okay, maybe the Jonas Brothers. I mean JB? Reffered to as Rock Band? Gross

    What a terrible cover.
