PROG ROCK VS. PRAGUE ROCK

30

Emerson lake and palmer - brain salad surgerySo the other day my non-metal-inclined girlfriend and I pillaged the bargain bin of a local record store (that’s vinyl, kids) and got some real gems at amazing prices, among them Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes, and King Crimson. When we got home we immediately unfurled the booty and promptly jammed EL&P’s Brain Salad Surgery while indulging in some fine greenery.

As we got lost in the album art and insanity of the sounds of that record, we got to talking about the minutae of the music and what made EL&P so interesting. I off-handedly used the term “prog rock” to explain their similarity to a band like Pink Floyd (who she newly loves; my Dark Side and Wish You Were Here vinyls live with her now), referencing the bands’ non-standard approaches to song structure and instrumentation.

“They’re from Prague?” she innocently asked.

So in honor of my girlfriend — you may have seen her comment here under “metalgf” from time to time — here’s some prog from Prague. Dirty Game are pretty much the only prog band from Prague I could find that don’t totally suck; and you know what, they’re actually pretty damn good. Metalgf, here you go: This is prog. From Prague.
