WILL BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE BE THE AVENGED SEVENFOLD OF 2008?

Bullet For My Valentine

Don’t say you didn’t see it coming; with the band’s surprise breakthrough success of The Poison in 2006, Welsh metallers Bullet For My Valentine are poised for a huge year in 2008 with their new record Scream, Aim, Fire. Much like Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine are one of those bands that really get metal fans riled up; you either love them or you hate them, and whichever you do, you do it vehemently.

Metal purists will claim the band are another in a long line of growled-verse / clean-chorus cookie cutter “chugga chugga” metalcore bands. Fans will point out the band’s songwriting ability and the fact that they have actually been a band for a long time. It’ll surely be one of the most hotly debated topics here on MetalSucks, and certainly one of the most divisive bands to have a record out in ‘08. But whatever you think about BFMV, one thing is certain; with the self-titled first single already making huge waves at radio (according to a press release), Scream, Aim, Fire will sell a ton of records, and the band will continue to do well on the road, worldwide.

  1. NuMallCore Pwns YoMama says:

Only if you’re looking at my “which bands I hate the most list” :)

  2. Jimmy says:

Avenged Sevenfold is still way better than Bullet For My Valentine (a pretty gay name I must add).

  3. NuMallCore Pwns YoMama says:

I’ll agree to that. I’d rather listen to A7X than BFMV. But still, the potential is there…

  4. Joe says:

I like this song. I wish they would let the bass player do all the grunting/harsher vocals. He seems to do a better job at it. Decent solo in this song, and its way faster than their last album. I’m definately gonna have to buy this album.

  5. Aaron Cooper says:

I like their last album so I am definitely looking forward to the new one.

  6. Sammy says:

I don’t think there is any doubting the “metal” in their music. Their name is a detriment, but only to close-minded dickheads who don’t bother to listen to their music. And I’ve found them on the last two albums to be less formulaic than clean chorus/scream verse. They have the European metal guitar tone and lead riffs throughout down pat.

  7. Aaron Cooper says:

PS: I hope to God they aren’t 2008’s A7X – I don’t need any hard rock or hip-hop in my metal, thanks!

If anything, I think BFMV sounds a lot more like Trivium (before The Crusade).

Was anyone else really let down by Triviun’s “The Crusade”? Ascendancy was and still is one of my favourite modern metal albums. Crusade was awful.

  8. d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n. says:

Bullet For My Valentine will indeed be the crappy band – I mean Avenged Sevenfold – of 2008.

  9. Eddie says:

I found it too catchy and unoriginal for my taste. It felt like it was all done before.

  10. TTquick says:

I don’t see a similarity at all. BFMV are way heavier and have the Swedes metal style.

  11. jay says:

just my opinion, but I feel like this song could have been pulled straight off of the last Trivium record.

  12. devil says:

When I was young, music that sounded exactly like this was considered subversive, satanic noise.

Now it’s considered mass-marketed, Hot Topic music for pansies.

Makes me chuckle. But I kinda dig it, even if it is all rehashed material.

  13. John says:

as far as good bands go this band is top of the cabinet stack! i hope they do as well as A7X more publicity the better

  14. pacomon says:

I thought Bullets first cd was decent. But it grew stale after track 5 and it was just formulaic. The new song sounds like a Trivium song. This is just one song, but i’ll buy the new cd and give it a chance. Personally, I think the new album should have been the cd that Trivium should of released instead of The Crusade (even though some of the solos in The Crusade are pretty BAD ASS).

  15. billygoat213 says:

That’s it I’m done. Deleting this blog from my google reader.

  16. Factor says:

    Love it!

  17. Rick says:

They suck now, A7x sucked then and sucked now. Yes.

  18. Shiv says:

Why should i even care when bands like Arsis exist?

  19. Sammy says:

    Good riddance Billygoat.

  20. Sammy says:

By the way, Billygoat hosts some metal show (via the web?) in Milwaukee. This quote from his site shows that he has a pretty close mind: “You will hear only true metal on the show — heavy, death, black and thrash.”

I get it, BG, it’s only metal if you say it’s metal, or within your limited view of the genre, eh?

  21. billygoat213 says:

That’s right, Sammy, I’m closed minded and proud of it.

  22. Seth says:

Cooper, I agree with you 100% on Trivium. The Crusade was Heafy trying to sound like Hetfield, and the music was trying to be increasingly epic and less heavy. Ascendency was great and Ember To Inferno was almost as good (just poorer recording quality). As far as BFMV, you can’t doubt their musicianship and songwriting WITHIN THE COOKIE CUTTER FORMULAIC genre in which they are working. They clearly do what they do well, I’m just increasingly irritated and uninterested by the type of thing they are doing. And yes, they do sound alot like Trivium on Ascendency, but I dont like the vocalist as much as Heafy’s old vocal style. Overall i wont buy or listen to this album, but I’ll refrain from trashing it as I think that song is way better than anything on their last album.

  23. very trivium/metallica esque. way better than A7X. we’ll see if time will hold them. I feel like it’s not quite enough substance to stick with me…..

  24. hegster90 says:

Avenged Sevenfold pride themselves on being innovative and separating themselves from other bands out there. You could play a KSE song, a Trivium song, and BFMF song to someone who’s never heard any of them, play them back, and that person would not be able to tell the difference. So to answer you’re question, no, they will not be the “A7X of 2008″, but rather one of the afformentioned other two groups: They either fail to evolve and make the same album just “heavier” (metal bands’ favorite word for promoting new albums), or they’ll take to Trivium route and fail at changing direction by blatantly (and poorly) ripping off their influences.

  25. devil says:

Clearly, this song will be tapped to become the new commercial mantra for the US Army.

  26. TJ says:

Not gonna lie, I was kind of digging the song.
That bit at the end where they cock the guitar like a rifle was dumb.

But it was a catchy song.

I second (or tenth) the idea that these guys are similar to Trivium. But there’s nothing wrong with that.

These are one of those bands that a lot of people will hate on because they aren’t “pure metal”, but they will still sell a shitload of records.

  27. Tag says:

This song is way cool. I’m totally digging it.

The intro just screams Death Metal! haha…fuckin love that shit!

  28. Vitruvian Ape says:

Uuuummmmm yeah, no thanks BFMV. I actually saw them years ago when they opened up for darkest hour with some band fight paris. They were on trustkill at the time and had a very emo, i miss my girlfriend sound to them.
Then when their last album came out, it struck me as the “i would listen to this if my cd player was broken and there is nothing else on the radio” sound.
But this, this you can keep.
I want no part in this.
