PHIL ANSELMO’S ARSON ANTHEM WILL BURN YOUR SHIT DOWN

aa.jpgPhil Anselmo isn’t even the vocalist for his latest project – he’s the guitarist. He left the front man duties to Eyehategod’s fresh-from-prison Mike Williams, and it was a smart move: Arson Anthem – the band and the album – is a knuckle-scraping punch of aggression and hostility, and outside the warmth of Anselmo’s spotlight, I suspect it will only find its way into the hands of those that will really appreciate it.

Just as well. The last time Anselmo tried to start a hardcore band, we got Superjoint Ritual, a group that mostly ended up sounding too much like re-heated Pantera to ever be able to warrant a favorable comparison to the main source of Anselmo’s acclaim (Superjoint’s bassist, the one n’ only Hank Williams III, handles drum duties here). Arson Anthem finds its roots in a considerably more old school mentality: the eight songs on this EP don’t even run for eleven full minutes, owe more to pre-crossover D.R.I. and punkier-flavored Die Kreuzen than Hatebreed or Terror, and, production wise, generally sound like total shit. And when I say that the production sounds like “total shit,” I mean it in the nicest way. Apparently this whole album was recorded in under a week, and it sounds that way. Retired tape traders, take note.

That’s not to say that there aren’t moments of metallic sheen here and there: the elephants-plodding crescendo of “The Avoider,” screeching tornado that is the midsection of “Year of the Fork,”the groovy second half of “Hammer Them Out,” and the grindcore-tastic 35 seconds that are “Cops Shoot Coke” (lyrics: “Copsshootcoke copsshootcoke copshootcoke copsshootcoooke!”) all push into Convergian almost-but-not-quite-metalcore territory.

Even if Arson Anthem isn’t quite brilliant, it is certainly a semi-precious gem. And for once, the name isn’t false advertising: it is, in fact, quite easy to imagine myself burning down someone’s house to this music. I mostly just wish that there were more of it so I’d have more time to watch it burn.

The artwork = complete crap, though. Totally falls into the “What were they thinking?” bucket.

I have been waiting for this shit for a while. I already know it fucking is going to jam. Remember when Phil changed his name to “Anton Crowley” and played guitar for Necrophagia? Everyone dogged his playing on the album for not being technical but he has a pretty good ear for killer riffs. Mike Williams is one of my all time favorite vocalists, Eyehategod burns down orphanages for kittens and gets medals for it. And Hank III is the fucking man, through and through.

Are you sayin that Hank III and Phil Anselmo are playing together? i always knew Hank III was cool and all, but this beats it.Id definately suggest Hank III leave the country thing behind and go for the metal. His last country album was not even close to what Hank JR. does.

Hank JR. is the man at what he does, and Hank III has a good opportunity to take the pissed off white guy thing to another level with none other than Phil Anselmo.

i think i missed something. I really didnt know that Phil and Hank were playing together.

I always thought it was the shit that Hank wore misfits shits at his concerts and from hearing him talk i always knew he was metal first.

but this beats all and im sorry i missed it.

the best thing about Pantera and Phil are that they were one of us. Most metalheads would laugh, and make fun, and ridicule us.

But you could always find the Pantera boys hanging out at a David Allen Coe Concert.

    enough said.

Many metalheads are liberal, tree hugging pieces of shit.

Many also like to take the other extreme and cross over into Satanism and Nepotism and delusionalism.

Pantera were always down home boys, blasting guitar in a shack in a swamp.

    thats what got my attention.

although, Phil Anselmo is quite a charachter, and he is often delusional and unpredictable.

    thats what came with success.

    and lots of drugs.

Phil is a good example of how not to treat yourself.

Im sorry ive had to watch some of his interviews he can barely stand up.

Hopefully, what he says is true and thats finally kicked the demons out.

    lets hope.

phil anselmo in later years after the pantera breakup is not the same guy who scram his guts out about strength and power on cowboys from hell and Vulgar display.

the Drugs took his fire away. he actually used to look healthy, and was believable when he sung about strength and power.

Did you really say Hank Jr. has it going on and Hank III doesn’t. You smokin. III’s klast album is way ahead of the bullshit his dad does.
