I believe that if you put rapping over any seriously downtuned metal that doesn’t real musical dynamics, yes it would sound “nu”. However, if you put rapping over the most metal of Dream Theater or some old band like Judas Priest, no it wouldn’t. Think about the “nu” bands that discarded rap like POD and Papa Roach and even Saliva. They really didn’t change the *music*, just the vocal style.

I think Isis falls into this category too. There are a lot of bounce-riff bands around that don’t have rapping frontman so its somehow different than the late 90’s surge of crap. Its mostly repackaging to me—

And instrumental metal bands need singers. That fad is lame.
