MORE BULLSHIT RHETORIC FROM METALLICA’S LARS ULRICH

Lars UlrichIn a recent interview with Revolver magazine, art-aficionado, download-hater and sometimes Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich spewed forth some more “this one’s going to bring back the old sound, man!” bullshit:

“This stuff is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds,” he said. “There’s a lot of light and shade in these songs. There’s heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there’s some slowdowns and musical interludes. It’s pretty different from St. Anger’, and it’s pretty different from the ‘Load’ stuff. This stuff is not the one-dimensional punch in the face that ‘St. Anger’ was. This is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an ’8.’”

Can we really believe anything this man says at this point? Will absentee-producer extraordinaire Rick Rubin right the sinking calamity of a ship that has been the past 3 Metallica albums? What are the chances of this album being about as good as poop in a jewel case?

I’m willing to bet it comes off sounding about as inspired as St. Anger but with better production. Metallica lost the fire a long long time ago.

When did Hetfield stop sounding so menacing? He just sounds like a pansy now.

Ok, I understand why people hate St. Anger, although I personally think it is a pretty decent album. But what’s the huge problem with Load? Ok, there’s too much filler and it followed the musical trends of the time, but it did so in a very competent manner. It’s not far behind Superunknown or Wiseblood.

I’m inclined to believe him this time. I hope it’s awesome :)

“poop in a jewel case”?? Oh you know you love Jewel.

So now everytime Rick Rubin’s fat ass is hired thats all it takes to make an epic album? This album is going to suck dick. A bunch of rich upper class pretentious white guys making a metal album…. fuck

  • Tony

Cool how you cherry picked the interview.
Here’s what Lars also said about “bringing back the old sound”

When asked if the material represents a return to the “old school,” Lars replied, “I hate to be that specific, because six months from now people are gonna go, ‘What the fuck? Lars lied to us!’

@ Tony: So either way, doesn’t that make Lars a liar? He just said the album “is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an ‘8.’” That’s very specific: he means the 1980s, aka the times the albums Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and …And Justice for All (you know – the cannon) were released. The time I imagine 99% of people would define as “old school.”

Then he contradicts himself and declines to be so “specific” as to say it’s “old school.” Hell, even if what Lars means is “Why does it have to be one or the other?” (e.g., there should be no mutual exclusivity between being old school and new school), why doesn’t he just say “It’s not one or the other?” Unless you just think he’s too much of an idiot to properly articulate himself. Which I actually might buy.

So… what were we talking about? Oh, yeah! Why wait six months? “Lars lied to us!”

    With all my respect,

    AR

I really, really, REALLY want this album to be awesome. I love most of the music these guys have done trogh the years, and I think that LOAD is the las really good album metallica has ever done. I’m just crossing my fingers.

Rick Ruben turns shit into gold. All the time. This guy has an ear for music like no one else. It’s not going to sound like anything from the 80′s. He’ll probably get them back to a point where they sounded good and then tweak things here and there to take them to a modern sound. I can easily imagine this coming out and everyone thinking it’s clearly the best since The Black Album.

I agree with Bastard1. Considering how many albums Rubin has produced, there are only a couple that weren’t good. And one of those wasn’t good just because I already hated the act. It certainly sounded great.

The new music is going back to their old key when Hetfield sounded good. That’s going to make a big difference. Rubin knows what made Metallica good and he’ll try to one-up it. Yeah, they’re all old now and less hungry/vital, so it’s not going to be Master Of Puppets-caliber music, but I bet it’s going to be the best thing since that period.

And this is coming from a guy who was never really that impressed by Metallica to begin with. In the Eighties they were one of my least favorite Thrash acts. I love MOP, but that’s about it.

the last good thing these guys did was a cover song. Yeah, thats right the Mercyful fate medley on Garage Inc.

that is the best thing theyve released since the black album.

I’m afraid Metallica doesn’t know what cool means anymore…
