I absolutely love the new record. I received an advance copy a few weeks ago from my friend in the record business and it hasnt left my cd player since. I’ll be purchasing the vinyl asap so I can hear the album in its lossless vinyl glory. Great post, but I have slightly different views on frances and amputechture (the first time I listened to frances I knew it would be one of my favorite albums, and I still love it start to finish, and Amputechture STILL just doesnt do it for me [aside from Meccamputechture, Vicarious, and Day of the Baphomets). I urge everyone to purchase the new album today, Best Buy should give you a nifty DVD featuring 22-minute performance of Frances the Mute’s opening track, Cygnus… Vismund Cygnus, as well as the band’s most accessibly hooky album since Deloused

Great post, I have pretty much to same feelings about The Mars Volta’s progression. I’ve listened to the new album and its just as challenging (and rewarding) as Amputechure. Check out my blog on the 29th for a full review!

I never really thought their music was that dense or found time time changes and the feel changes to be out of place. maybe it’s from listening to Frank Zappa alot when I was a kid, but I never really had that stuff stand out to me hearing mars volta

attackmole, they always sucked as openers lol. They want to do their own thing, and don’t really like performing in front of a crowd that doesn’t ‘understand’ them, so alot of their opening gigs for RHCP and SOAD sucked.

Try and find their ‘goliath’ performance on MTV canada if you want to see a good live performance of them, they kill that show

Not a big fan myself. Then again, I was turned off by my first experiance with them seing them open for SOAD. It was like a wall of terrible, terrible, random noise for about 45 minutes straight with no breaks. A random guy next to me turned to me and asked “Do you actually like that shit?” afterwords. It was goddamn terrible.

Now that I’ve heard these tracks, they sound significantly better. They’re still not my cup of tea, but it’s not the traversity that they were live.

I really loved De-loused, and I suppose I liked Frances the Mute and Amputechture. But the last two records were just so DENSE. Incomprehensible concepts combined with massive 80-minute slabs of music makes them very difficult to listen to, especially if you listen to full albums like me.

However I’ve heard their new album is different, so I look forward to hearing it. The whole ouija board thing is pretty interesting too…

Hey thanks for the great post on the Mars Volta. they have been one of the most interesting bands in the limelight since their debut, and i would venture to say they are largely underappreciated for there contributions to the expansion of rock and roll. i can’t wait to get there new albun and dive in. thanks for the preview

Love them. Their music can get me moving like I’m a 5 year old kid jumping around to records not knowing what to do with myself. It’s hard to pick a fave since they’re all great…. You know Omar taught John Frusciante from RHCP’s all the parts for amputechure and had him play them so he could do the mixes and whatnot. That whole cd is just mindblowing to the last cut off note, that leave you thinking WTF the first time you hear it.

Live they are a vicious beaste. And god bless them for it too. the idea of playing a song from whichever cd frequently turns into a long ass jam. Definately a band worth seeing live.
