THE OCEAN – PRECAMBRIAN: RECORD OF 2007 THAT WE ARE ASSHOLES FOR MISSING THE BOAT ON

The Ocean - Precambrian

Ok guys, we admit it: we fucked up. The Ocean’s double-disc concept record Precambrian wasn’t in any of our 2007 year-end lists, hell, it wasn’t even listed in our “stuff that came out this year” preliminary list. At least a few of you chimed in with comments suggesting we consider Precambrian. We didn’t listen. We snubbed The Ocean again — Axl, Kip and myself — by not including it in any of our Top Ten lists, and once again lots of you commented in amazement that it hadn’t been included. And yet we STILL didn’t even bother to check it out.

What the fuck was wrong with us? Kip and I sat down the other night with Precambrian and some fine herbals (tea, of course), and parked our asses on the MetalSucks Mansion couch in front of my sweet ass stereo system. And WOAH. Holy fuck. You guys know what you’re talking about! Our jaws dropped to the floor from literally the first song of the bone-crushing first disc and remained there throughout the genre-defying, progged-out second disc. This shit is for real — a true, bonafide ALBUM as opposed to a collection of songs.

For now, I’ll leave it at that. Precambrian is an amazing piece of art through and through, and had I not been a fool and actually listened to you people it would’ve surely been in my Top 5 of 2007. Maybe I’ll post a full review in the future. GO BUY THIS RECORD!

Yeah, I was kinda surprised of the lack of coverage on this album. You guys did link to that awesome sub-sub-genre essay written by a member of The Ocean, so I figured you at least knew enough about them. Anyway, welcome to the bandwagon. May as well check out the new AYREON while you’re loving the prog!

Aeolian is pretty stunning, too. I’d definitely give that a listen.

I got this one pretty late, too. I’m glad I did, though… it’s been in constant rotation for over a month.

  • Kip Wingerschmidt

Yeah seriously, Vince – I can’t believe you and Axl dropped the ball on this one…I, of course, have known about it for ages

I just picked up this album too… I took a few songs to grow on me, but fortunately this record has a lot of them, and they’re all good. You want to think it’s a bad Isis rip off record, but oh, it’s so much more…

    germany’s finest metalband today.

Another band from german metal arena: Disillusion. Great prog-metal, especially the first album (Back to the times of Splendor), very complex and full of crushing riffs.

  • märtin

@boaba: you’re right man! but I like their latest effort “Gloria” even more. although it’s a complete change from their previous works.
