TOOL TO BEGIN WORKING ON NEW ALBUM… ALREADY??

Thursday, February 14th, 2008 at 3:24pm by Vince Neilstein

ToolIt hasn’t even been two full years yet since Tool released their most recent album 10,000 Days, so we can expect to wait at least another 2 years before we get the next record, right? Well, maybe not. Apparently Maynard told MTV.com that the band is about to enter the rehearsal studio to begin writing for a new album.

For a band who usually takes 4-5 years between albums this comes as a shock. For a fan who’s used to waiting 4-5 years between albums this comes as a welcome surprise — or does it? Maybe part of what makes Tool’s mystique so awesome is the fact that we always have to wait… so… long… for new Tool music. But really, we can hardly complain. Without a A Perfect Circle holding things up (Billy Howerdel will release a new record under the name Ashes Divide in April without Maynard) there’s no reason they shouldn’t begin making a new album. And news that the band will soon begin writing doesn’t mean much; first they have to start writing, then they have to write, then they have to record, then mix, then master, then… you get the point. It’ll be at least another year before we get new Tool music.

But still; get excited! New TOOL! After all, they are the best band currently walking the planet Earth.

    Fucking. Awesome.

  2. Ken M. says:

Tool may be a pretty awesome band but the best band walking the planet earth is indeed guns n roses.

  3. NuMallCore Pwns YoMama says:

I had a very shitty day, but this brought a smile to my face.

  4. The Pig In Zen says:

considering the half-assed nature of their last record, I think they’re probably back to claim their stake as a consistent band.

Or at least I hope. As much as I like APC, maybe this is a good thing.

  5. RSD says:

Tool is NOT the best band on earth. Maybe if you smoke meth.

  6. ERiK says:

I just have to be a dick and say I think Tool is THE most over rated band on earth. I like that one cd that came out around 96 or so (Aenema???). It’s decent. By enlarge I think this band is so boring. Every song sounds the same – droning progrock that goes on for ever with stupid time changes that no one but drummers give a damn about. Every song I’ve ever heard is in the same fucking key. Tool regurgitates guitar riffs more times than Dave Mustaine puts out signature series guitars.

Know whats funny, I swear the one time I saw Tool was at Pine Knob w/ KORN and LIMP Biskit! As I remember, Korn was all over Tool’s nuts about how awesome they are. Or maybe it was Limp Biskit that was all over their nuts…. Maybe this was one of the early Ozzfests – I dunno, it was forever ago when all 3 bands were in their apex of popularity.

Well, I know Tool is your favorite band so I’ll get off it. My favorite band of the 2000’s is Brand New Sin so what do I know.

  7. Pat says:

WTF? Is Maynard going for the Harry S. Truman look? His next announcement will be that Hitler’s dead and the war in Europe is over.

  8. TheMarsVolta says:

I cant name a single band that mixes integrity, virtuosity, and craftsmanship on every single record other than Tool. Probably one of the most underated bands of all time due to the fact that their music isnt very approachable.

  9. Scu222 says:

Anyone with an open mind and a little patience will realize that Tool is indeed one of the greatest rock bands of all time. But it comes as no suprise, considering how drowned in shitty pop radio music we are, that tool is as unrealized and unappreciated as it is. May we all one day transcend to see the true beauty of Tool music.

P.S. Listening to Lateralus at full volume, alone and in complete darkness is probably the closest I’ve come to having a religious experience.

  10. No Doubt Tool is an amazing band and I cannot wait to hear their next CD. Correct Scu222, there is nothing that sounds as good as Lateralus cranked up to 11 on the dial.

  11. Heavy-Gunner says:

For anyone who hasent listend to TOOL yet the song your gunna want to start with is “Schism” thats the song I first heard and for 4 years ive been a big fan of TOOL all thanks to that song and now all of the others but now that I hear a new album is coming want to listen to TOOL even more.

  12. Paul says:

Ok Erik it’s exactly as you say. “what do you know”? Because to say that they sound the same on every song is pathetic. It’s just as much about lyrics as music with them. I would venture to say that you havn’t heard Their first records Opiate, and Salival. To When they started to become more progressive with Aenema and Lateralus. Funny thing is they make music more for their enjoyment, than for us the fans. I saw an interview with Mayard a while back and he said something funny. He said if you saw them and got an experience out of it that you shouldn’t have to listen to them again and to make your own experiences. The most original band i’ve ever heard.

  13. Taylor says:

There’s already a new song floating around on the internet called “The Lift”

  14. MacDaddy says:

One of the most beautiful albums of all time is 10,000 days. I was a little hesitant when I first heard it, but after giving it a second chance, I couldn’t stop listening. I think that good bands put out good music, but a great band creates and act on unconventional ideas. The band “Tool” has become an evolutionary, as well as, revolutionary. Each of their albums has (for me) created a different sense of conscience that has progressed over time. I have grown up with Tool and I feel that each one of their albums has followed me through all different stages of being. Lost, dazed, hopeless, and acceptance are ideas that everyone experiences and Tool embraces those ideas and creates something deeper than just music. Also, they are one of the most comical bands I have every listen to. I forgot my pen…hahaha, that always happens to me. I have a brilliant idea to save the world at 3:30 in the morning and I never can remember because I shit the bed again.

  15. louiet says:

Erik and rsd….. you have so much to learn young ones..Paul couldnt have said it better….
It seems as if everyone has been desensitized…Losing touch of what great music actually is…I am sometimes amazed at how different and detailed each song is with this band..Tool may indeed be the best band of our time. At least the most advanced band of the last 15 yrs….

  16. cripple says:

yea brand new sin compared to tool is like fall out boy compared to led zeppelin…there is no comparison..so shut your face.

  17. cam says:

Salival isn’t one of the first albums, it’s Opiate, Undertow, Aenema, Salival, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days.

  18. IlikeWaffles says:

Salival is hardly an album at all, seeing as it hardly has original material that didn’t occur on any other album.

To me people who claim tool to be a shitty band or riff recyclers really just haven’t listened to enough of their music. Listening to three songs is not a good way to form an opinion.
I hope this album is different than 10000 Days.

  19. H. Lecter says:

First thought on reading this was – “NO. WAIT. DO WHAT WORKS.”

I now realize that Maynard and the gang are going to do whatever the hell they want, because that’s what has got them here. And that’s comforting. If it’s time to begin a new album then BY ALL MEANS WRITE SOMETHING THAT MAKES MY SHALLOW BEATEN HARDENED HEART WEEP.

I place my faith in you, Maynard.

  20. musicface says:

hey hey tool is a cool band!

  21. toolhead says:

brand new sin hahahahahahahahahahahaha dude maynard is like one of the best song writers dude at least tool actually writes their own shit

  22. hitler on ice says:

I just listened to 10,000 days today for the first time since the summer that it came out. Wow! I forgot how amazing it was. I got to wondering if perhaps another new album was in the mix, and it brought me here. Aenima and Lateralus have definitely earned their rightful place in my top 10 albums of all time, but 10,000 days is still an INCREDIBLE album. I can’t believe I almost forgot how great it was!

I honestly think bands like Tool, Radiohead, and Mars Volta will be looked back upon in 20-30 years as LEGENDS much like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are looked back upon today.

  23. Taylor B. says:

ahah u have to be kidding me guns n roses rnt even a band anymore they wr ok but tool is amazing 5-8 minute long songs works of art amazin guitar drums and maynards voice is amazing he has managed to hold up tool, a perfect circle, and now he is doing puscifer tool is amazing ok guns n roses wr good but thr is no contest between them

  24. mikeomega says:

brand new sin….what a crock of s#$%…..dude tool is a giant, Do you even listen to any good music ? mudvayne,korn,pusifer,hellyeah,godsmack,chevelle,stonesour…..slipknot???? Do you have any good fu#$en tast at all…I think your the tool kid….and hopes on the next mosh pit your in that you get whats comin. tool stands in the metal hall of gods and will never be replaced and I bet money that your lil prep band would gobble up maynards balls at a single call so lick your lips to that.
Lil boys listen to your crap…real men know real music and piss all over prep bands .

  25. phale says:

tools new album will feature maynard singing mostly in the ‘black metal’ style he used on ticks & leeches (apparently he used to hurt his voice doing it, but he learned a new technique from death metal singer, i dont remember who…anyway i think this is awesome).

guitarist adam jones said they have been listening to nwoahm (he mentioned mastodon and chimaira), and will be going for a heavier, more straightforward sound than 10000 days. tool doing death metal?! im facking stoked!

  26. cam says:

Hey Phale, please tell me where you read the news about the new album being more death metal. Cause if this is true, You know Maynard and the gang will undoubtedly create the most brilliant piece of music to date!!!! Goddamnit do yall have any idea how fucking awesome the new album would be? And I know TOOL is the only band that could pull off fusing their style music w/ death metal, and still sound incredibly beautiful.

PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD LET THIS BE TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. Dave says:

    Sources or bullshit. Idiots.

  28. postafflatus says:

All I gotta say is… I will wait no matter how long it will take for TOOL to release their new album, I will wait and pray a little once in a while that their new album would be improvement over its predecessors like all of the albums before it… I think thats one of most amazing things we all love about TOOL. It surprises us, blows our mind and makes us think deeply within us, sometimes so deep where not even a tear of light has reached the far end-edge of our minds… So everyone who loves the TOOL the way I do lets just all be patient, cause we know it, it will BE WORTH IT :) Sincerely yours…

  29. james3336 says:

Tool is a new age recreation of classical music. Changing sounds and styles all in the same song, pauses, dissonances, the combination of Keenan’s voice and thrum of the guitar, and the amazing construction of drum and bass rhythms produces a sound that I think is beyond the understanding and appreciation of most listeners today. Unfortunately, almost every song on the radio is mainstream, ridiculously repetitive garbage that stubbornly refuses to be the least bit engaging. While our radios breed stupidity, the grace and flawless execution of Tool’s studio albums creates a haven for self-discovery and spiritual revival. I pride in my Tool, music of human emotion and evolution and change, rather than pointless repetitive drollery about, well, nothing. Where today’s “artists” create fans, Tool’s artistry creates a generation of thinkers.

Brand new sin sucks balls. They don’t even have a venue on their tour outside of NY.

  31. kwaggy says:

  32. HR Puff'n'stuff says:

Tool is a cool guy he is tough and doesn’t afraid of anything.

  33. Laughin' Jack says:

“Tool is a cool guy”? LMFAO!!! I hear ya. But tool is a band, not a guy. It’s actually 4 guys. I think they are the best band since Floyd though. If you understand and appreciate Tool, you should be able to understand and appreciate Floyd. But thats just this guys opinion. If you disagree, i don’t know you, so what do I care.
