POLL: WHAT’S THE NEXT ANNOYING TREND IN METAL?

Thursday, March 6th, 2008 at 4:58pm by

Metal trends go in approximately 7-8 year cycles. Ten years ago we had nu-metal coming up, and by 2000 dozens of rap-metal mooks roamed the planet. That trend has seen its day, and the current vogue in the metal scene is the combination of NWOBHM, thrash and hardcore affectionately known as “metalcore” (read Dallas Coyle’s thoughts on the subject). 2008 might be the peak of that trend; so what’s next? There are certainly a few options of underground metal scenes bubbling at the moment; which one is going to catch on and spawn hordes of bad imitators?

What’s the next annoying trend in metal?

I voted stoner but only because it’s the closest to what I believe, but not exactly. I believe the new annoying trend is Williamsburg Beardo metal. You know, hipster throwback like Early Man, Priestess, and the ilk. Those bands aren’t horrible, but I can already predict that I’m going to be VERY sick of hipsters posing as metal!!

    I voted Deathcore.
I love thrash and hope I don’t get sick of the thrash revival.

@ Jason: Good call! I’ve added in that choice.

  • Gerald Givens

It seems like Deathcore has had it’s day and is on the way out.

Deathcore is the natural progression for stupid trends from metalcore… it’s just that little bit more “extreme”. And what’s up with every band and their dog being labelled “melodic death metal”?

  • Paul D

I fail to see what’s remotely annoying about Mastodon.

  • http://www.conorschaefer.com/blog/ Conor

Mastodon ain’t my thang but whatever. As Gerald said, Deathcore is almost gone. Thrash revival has been swelling the past few years and we’re only going to see more of it. Deathcore formula just doesn’t have staying power.

It doesn’t have enough throwback element to it. Revival movements always generate more of a following, because it lures older, disinterested fans back into the fold, and also offers the posers a chance to experience the original movement, which they’ve always longed to do.

The next person that says “deathcore” gets punched in the face.

I hope the thrash revival goes on and on, like the lame gothenburg/metalcore blight has. Thrash annoying? never! More like always ruling… definetly the greatest of all metal styles.

  • Ken M

you know what trend is most annoying

    hating on avenged sevenfold

    owned bitches.

  • attackmole

Thrash revival. Deathcores a bit too niche.

  • mrsaucytrousers

My vote is for Williamsburg Beardo metal. Your gonna get all the indie kids thinking they are cool listening to something heavy. They’ll start spiting out shit from Wikipedia about Black Sabbath and how they’ve been fans for years. attackmole is right when he said deathcore is too niche those bands will always play in tiny DIY venues with 20 kids and it will prolly die off in a year.

  • Ross

It’s definitely all these idiot JFAC/Despised Icon idiots running around defacing death metal and grindcore.

  • http://www.last.fm/user/Richaod Richaod

Deathcore. It’d be hard to say anything bad about Mastodon or Baroness.

Can I vote for style (technicality) over substance instead? A lot of metalheads seem to be much better guitarists than songwriters… and I suppose that’s always been the case, but now they get more credit for it. Cases in point: DragonForce, Trivium etc.

Protest the Hero would be an example of a band that do it well though.

I would be least annoyed by a thrash revival.

‘Deathcore’ has no legs whatsoever. Anything that a-melodic tends to have a short shelf life. (see: Grindcore which legitimately lasted all of 4 years)

Though honestly, I see douchebags doing to metal what they did in the ’80′s : “ya know, I like the heavy shit, but if I mellow it out a bit I can be more popular and sell more records”
I don’t think we’ll see a full on hair metal revival but a style eerily similar will be the next big thing.

I just hope I’m there to bang the hell out of the over hair sprayed hair metal chix.

  • CarlosRamirez

Wasn’t it bad enough they raised the rents in Williamsburg and Bushwick? Why do hipsters appropriate everything?

P.S. Whatever God Forbid are classified as, can we put an end to it?

  • http://www.myspace.com/catatonicdisassembly Nick

i agree with Richaod…prog wank metal is getting ridiculous it seems…and metalcore’s been dead since that Ozzfest contest reality show a few years back, so i think that’s non-issue (as well as “deathcore/myspace hair metal”)…

of course, maybe we’re (all posters here) just turning into old men too ;/

I wish Black Metal would become trendy, and little kids in Mayhem shirts would start stabbing each other while pretending to be Varg. The problem would eliminate itself.

  • http://www.Nonelouder.com jasonfromNONELOUDER

I need to erase my cookies and vote again! Down with beardo!! :)

  • NeverStopThis

The Devil Wears Prada and JFAC are two complete different types of metal. They should not be put into the same category. JFAC blows. They are just like every other metal band. The Devil Wears Prada is actually different than most. There arent a lot of metal bands that you can say “hey TDWP sounds just like these guys”

@ Ross: Despised Icon is not that bad. But I agree with JFAC, having seen them live.

    @ triplsiks: “deathcore”

  • SickSixSeth

I think the next trend in metal will be the lack of anything sounding any different than what was released 20 years ago after because of constant bitching by fat long haired 40 year olds.
