METALSUCKS AT SXSW 2008

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008 at 12:07pm by

sxsw 2008So it’s that time of year again, when hundreds of annoying hipster bands and hundreds of thousands of annoying hipster fans descend on Austin, TX for the five day non-stop drug and alcohol binge music festival South by Southwest. Whatwhat hipster rags like Brooklyn Vegan and Pitchfork (and I think even Stereogum) suddenly deciding they are now covering metal, this year actually sports a pretty impressive smattering of metal bands.

Though your esteemed editors Axl and Vince will not be attending this year (nor will Kip, whose friendship with the MetalSucks brethren was forged through a couple of all-night benders at last year’s festival), we’d like to introduce MetalSucks correspondent and talented writer Corey Mitchell, who will be giving us a day-by-day account of the various metal goings-on in Austin. You may also know him as MetalSucks commenter LiquidMan666. We’re psyched to have Corey on board.

After the jump, a full list of the events Corey will (God willing) be attending. It’s also a pretty comprehensive collection of all metal-related happenings at SXSW, so if you’re going to the festival you might want to check it out. And of course, feel free to send any show or party tips / reviews / whatever to news [at] metalsucks.net.

Hopefully, someone will make it to the Zombie Eaters show today. (The Sword paying tribute to Faith No More)

Note that Dave of Brooklyn Vegan grew up a metalhead (or so I’ve heard), Pitchfork has been covering metal for years, and Stereogum touches on it here and there thanks to their senior writer Brandon Stosuy, who you may know from his ‘Show No Mercy’ column no Pitchfork, among other things.

    What’s with the hate?

@ Black Bubblegum: no hate, i really love your writing! i just find it curious that brooklyn vegan all of a sudden deemed it cool to hire someone to cover metal, ya know? I wish there was a filter that allowed me to feed only the metal posts into my RSS reader so I didn’t have to read about Vampire Weekend or whatever flavor-of-the-moment band is this week for the 109th time!

I am stoked and gearing up for my quick road trip back to my former stomping grounds! I am looking forward to standing on my ancient feet for 14 hours tomorrow in potentially 95 degree heat. God, I love Texas!

I am honored to report on SXSW for MetalSucks, easily my favorite metal blog on the internets. Hopefully, I can gerry rig my ancient 2001 laptop so I can provide you guys with relatively fast reviews. Of course, I might be too slobbering drunk to even remember where the gigs are; so, at best, it’s a crap shoot as to what you’re gonna get…

Vince – Well I am glad it’s not a hate thing, I am a fan of your stuff and lord knows us metallers have to stick together because metal (and consequently, metal writers) get(s) no respect….. I must say though that Dave has been and is a big fan of metal (older stuff mostly) and has been looking for a metal dude for a while. He and I actually discussed doing a metal column more than a year ago, but because of our scheds, it didnt work out. If you look back on the bands he has covered, some of them have been in metal (he is literally one of the first bands to post about your fave Genghis Tron ever http://74.52.173.194/archives/2006/03/genghis_tron_ak_2.html) and hardcore, so I think to call him and BV in general “bandwagon-jumpers” is a little premature.

Email me, lets catch a show sometime
