WELCOME BACK TO THE FUTURE OF METAL

YYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSSS………this is why we are fucking here; this is the evolution in so many goddamn ways of what we call heavy music — each of the bands on this bill is pushing the boundaries in some way or another, and it’s all future-forward…how accessible it is, for anyone, let alone fans of aggressive music, remains to be seen, but in any case — no matter how into any of these bands you are, it is important to know that this grouping will go down as MOTHERFUCKING LEGENDARY. And therefore, whether you like it or not, it is worth your while to be a part of this marker in the historical record.

    Calling these bands (excluding Converge) the future of metal is absurd…. there is nothing remotely timeless about them, they are all scene (regardless or not of their position in the scene). Baroness sounds like Isis meets Mastodon. While Ghengis is inarguably original, they are also downright unlistenable. And the Red Chord sounds like every other goddamn extreme band out there. Get off these bands dicks.

    I would hope the TRUE future of metal is coming from places like Gojira, Enslaved, Agalloch, DEP.

    First of all, Jaime, by excepting Converge, you’re handing him 25% of his claim. Secondly, you can’t discount Baroness, simply for being “Isis meets Mastodon”, when you go on to cite Gojira (Metallica + Meshuggah + Death + Tool) and DEP (Converge + Coalesce + Faith No More). Nothing against Gojira or DEP (both of whom I love and agree that are heading for huge things), but Baroness is going to be a huge band, therefore, a “Future of Metal” tag is appropriate.

    Genghis Tron definitely tests you, but I find their latest release to be highly listenable. Their work with texture is extremely inventive, and no, i’m not just saying that b/c they go without a drummer. Therefore, “Future of Metal” was an apporpriate tag.

    I have no real opinion about Red Chord, though, as I’m not too familiar. So I’ll leave it at that.

    But quit trying to shit on the man’s enthusiasm, guys.

    Fanboys are boring. Coverge are pioneers of their sound (100% not my thing by the way, but they helped create a unique sound that is so copied today their significance cannot be denied), their sound being perhaps an offshoot of metal, but having more to do with hardcore than mainstream metal. Splitting hairs? maybe. .

    The difference with Gojira and DEP is that they take their influences and create something unique rather than just being another scene band (ie Baroness).

    Genghis Tron is also just DEP with retro sounding syths and ironic melodic patterns reminiscent of early video game soundtracks…. original, yea kinda, but being dependent on your nostalgia for all those things we enjoyed in the 80′s does not the future of metal make.

    and “shitting on the man’s enthusiasm” is probably encouraged, because it shows that 1) not everyone who listens to this genre and reads this page think the same way, and 2) this site has a comments section, meaning they would want some sort of discussion regarding their OPINIONS on something… I wasn’t rude or derisive to Kip himself, I just disagree strongly with his take. Apologies if my post was construed that way, there is already too much silly rudeness on the intertubes.

    The only band that even comes close to resembling metal on this tour is The Red Chord.

    Converge = hardcore punk (original as it may be, it’s more punk than metal)
    Baroness = rock (and not very good; compared to Relapse’s heavier releases, Baroness are easy listening)
    Coliseum = rock (same thing here, easy listening and all)
    Genghis Tron = pseudo-grind / art-grind (whatever you call it, it’s bad)

    A lot of hot air, I think. And, considering that 3/5ths of the bill are Relapse’s attempts of “expansion”, this is just the tour Relapse needs to prove that they’re really selling out and giving contracts to lesser bands that what they used to have. It’s no wonder Suffocation left.

    This is not the future or moving forward of metal. Todays newer bands all sound the same like generic mid ninties death metal but with someone stepping on there balls. That dreaded pig scream or whatever you call it is absolutly horrible. Metal has progressed forward up until probably 2004-05. Todays metal is really embarrassing. No talent, constant double base, screamo bulls**t.

    Saw the opening night of this show in Worcester, MA. Genghis Tron absolutely killed it.

    You all have shit taste in music. Converge is not hardcore punk anymore than Ashlee Simpson is grind.

    Genghis sound nothing like Dillinger, and its further testament (lolz, TESTAMENT) that you have your head up your ass when you make such a baseless comparison.

    Do yourself a favor, go listen to ‘Dead Mountain Mouth”, and “Drummachinegun” and come back and say that DEP’s Mike Patton+Mathcore+Aphex Twin sound is that similar.

    Oh, and Gojira are decent (horrible live, half of their last albums was really good), but your equation is off. They are Mastodon+Morbid Angel.

    Smarten up, clean out your ears, and perhaps stop dickriding Meshuggah and generic mainstream metal before you cast aspersions on four legitimately good bannds (Clients is an exceptional record. maybe you could, I dunno, learn to deal with dissonance. Hey, and then you could perhaps give jazz and nop wave a try! Think of how your taste will improve! LOLINFLAMES)

    This show sounds like it could be fun. I enjoy Coliseum and COnverge and atrleas have a moderate interest in Baroness. When i was younger I loved the Red Chord. I doubt I will go though. I am looking forward to when the genghis tron novelty wears off. That band is so phony and boring.
