LAYNE STALEY DIED SIX YEARS AGO TODAY… [SATURDAY SONGS TO (DIE OR) GET STONED TO]
Saturday, April 5th, 2008 at 5:22pm by Vince Neilstein
Layne Staley died 6 years ago today of a heroin overdose and his rotting corpse was found 2 weeks later. What a sad way for a talented singer, frontman, and one of the most influential men of late ’80s / early ’90s metal and grunge to go. Meditate on that as you listen to these tracks and smoke your Saturday afternoon bowl.
R.I.P. Layne Staley. (August 22, 1967 – ca. April 5, 2002)

Alice in Chains – “Bleed the Freak” (Facelift)
Alice in Chains – “Dam That River” (Dirt)
Alice in Chains – “Rain When I Die” (Dirt)
Alice in Chains – “Sludge Factory” (Alice in Chains)

Still an utterly amazing band. I listen to ‘em regularly to this day.
If you live in Boston, you can hear about 300 bands try and rip him off. Horribly.
You missed “Nutshell” in that list of songs. What an amazing song. RIP Layne.
Such a waste of an amazing talent. RIP Layne, I miss you :(
I just noticed the new slogan, LMAO
Nice one!
Kurt Cobain 4/5/1994
Layne Staley 4/5/2002
Charlton Heston 4/5/2008
Coincidence?
Without even realizing that, I pulled up Facelift on my iPod today and was reintroduced to how great that album was ~ IS.
“Kurt Cobain 4/5/1994, Layne Staley 4/5/2002, Charlton Heston 4/5/2008 Coincidence?”
why yes, yes it is a coincidence, if Charlton knew he died on the same day in history as two junkies he would be spitting blood, but he had dementia so i’m sure he didn’t care in the slightest. vale Kurt and Layne and irony for you Chuck, life is cruel.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Layne is missed.
dude. first of all dont you EVER call Layne Staley a junkie. ” if Charlton knew he died on the same day in history as two junkies he would be spitting blood”

Are you serious? Chill.
A junkie simply means he was a drug addict, in particular, a heroin addict. I’m sure Layne himself would not have objected to being called a “junkie.” His songs often spoke of the hopelessness of his addiction, the constant call of the needle. Maybe just my interpretation, but tracks like “Down in a Hole,” “God Smack,” “JUNK Head,”….desperation and drug addiction are constant themes in AIC lyrics. I don’t know, maybe it’s because I struggle with same disease/addiction that Layne did, or because I myself have been called one many times, but I don’t automatically take “junkie” as such an insult or think of the word in such negative terms. At least to me, “junkie” doesn’t mean bad person, it doesn’t mean homeless, it doesn’t mean lowlife (although sometimes we do lowlife things), it just makes it clear someone is a heroin addict. And believe me, Layne was more than a “bit addicted.”
