WHO THE FUCKING FUCK THINKS MOONSORROW IS A NAZI BAND?!

I’m no expert on folk metal band Moonsorrow, but I do this know much: their latest release, last year’s V – Hävitetty, is killer (read my mini-review here – the album is only two dollars on iTunes!), and they’re a Nazi band like this site is a polka blog.

But I guess some people actually do think Moonsorrow are a bunch of fascist fuckheads, ’cause front man Ville Sorvali just released the following statement:

“We, Moonsorrow, have come across news that Antifa wishes to prevent our concert in Berlin on April 17th. We hereby announce that we are not a Nazi band… Some have said that Moonsorrow have an SS rune in their logo… The S in the logo is not intended to look like an SS rune, it has been drawn in an angular manner to suit the logos other letters.”

This is just plain ri-fucking-diculous. Does the letter “s” in the Moonsorrow logo (above) look any more or less like the SS logo than the double-S in the Kiss logo? (I understand that we know Kiss isn’t a Nazi band because its two most prominent members are Jews – hel-lo, Mr. Chaim Witz – but sheesh.) For that matter, how come no one made a stink when other bands – like Marilyn Manson and Faster Pussycat – appropriated the SS font for their own logos?

This is just dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb. And I strongly encourage Moonsorrow fans everywhere – especially German ones – make the biggest stink about it possible.

I live in Germany. It’s… it’s strange over here. They take the WWII/Nazi shit really seriously. You can be arrested for doing the “Hitler salute” and actually that just happened three weeks ago in the city I live. A couple months back someone was jailed, for three years, for publicly denying the Holocaust.

I know it saids crazy and anti-free speech, but they’re doing their best to make sure Nazism never, ever gets popular again. I guess this overreaction (“that S looks kind of like the shocktrooper S!”) isn’t all that different from Bible Belt America getting all bent out of shape about sex education classes teaching something other than abstinence.

Plus, it’s legal to drink in public here. ;)

Fuck! That’s the second time left-winged fascists try to stop a band from playing in berlin for no reason! last month it was nachtmystium. their ‘mistake’ wa a Burzum-cover they recorded years ago. But the antifa made so much trouble that the club cancelled the show completely. that only happened in berlin, there weren’t any problems with the second german show in cologne.

Ace Frehley made the KISS logo, and made the s’s like that to “mess with the 2 jews” according to the book “Kiss & Tell” he also marched through Gene’s hotel room in a nazi uniform etc.

Yes that’s true. he also did it to bug Gene & Stanley Eise….er…Paul Stanley.

And yeah, they are kinda touchy about that kinda stuff over in Germany, and I guess you can’t blame them.

KISS had to actually change the SS’s on their logo to a more curved font on some of their releases.
It was the only time Gene ever allowed the logo to be altered…
..I have seen copies of these German imports.

I actually contacted the venue about the cancelled Nachtmystium show and they said (quote) “I do not believe that nachtmystium support fascist attitudes, but i think it is even not good to give respect to a musician who supports fascist Ideas, as varg vikernes is doing it.”

So you are not just forbidden to co-opt imagery into your art that has heavily impacted social morality and philosophy, you are not allowed to reference people who have done so either?

Fucking ridiculous. These Antifa idiots should thank the far right for giving them a reason to get up in the morning, as it often appears like without them they wouldn’t be able to formulate a single idea of their own. Intellectually frail reactionary children.

I think bands folk / viking black metal should seriously consider these things before anything else. You have to imagine that if you have a group that can be associated in any way (for whatever reason, does not matter) to the Nazis, should make clear from the beginning what they are not.
I understand the two positions, obviously the majority of groups that have been controversial totally false and even ridiculous (except for Rammstein I think that if they seem not to be Nazis and have stated and expressed his rejection of fascism etc, then seems to go playing around with the appearance of a rather ambiguous) but the rest of the ones I know who have had these debates, even Blind Guardian (WTFF !!??) are totally false and meaningless as to Moonsorrow. I think antisfascistas groups should focus on other things around and become informed.
Although the groups have to think about how you will be receiving your work and try to foresee these things (in the case of Moonsorrow, not so, since it is quite absurd to be associated with Nazis …) It’s like you said a time: all that is attempting to recover Nordic myths and traditions, why do noses have to be a Nazi? The anti-Christianity not have to be Nazis, but sometimes yes …

    Good blog post.

Postscript: As you have seen I am not a native speaker of English. It is translated with google. forgive me and if any phrase seems to say something wrong try to see otherwise, I really like Blind Guardian, Moonsorrow, Rammstein…etc. I am antifascist thinking too, so listen Nordic good music is not against being anti-fascist and a hater of the Nazis…

    Thanks
