THE BINARY CODE WILL CRUSH THE METAL SCENE, ONE ZERO AT A TIME

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008 at 3:36pm by Vince Neilstein

The Binary CodeLast night I was lucky enough to catch New Jersey progressive death metal band The Binary Code at New York’s Lit Lounge in front of a crowd of about 15 people. And by lucky I mean that a band this good can’t possibly stay this underground for long, because fucking lord, this an immensely talented and passionate group of dudes. And to give them the benefit of the doubt, they were first on a four-band, Monday night bill, a tough spot for any band — but they played like headliners, captivating everyone in attendance.

What impresses me most about The Binary Code, aside from their absolutely stellar musicianship, is the band’s ability to write punishingly brutal and highly technical songs that are easy enough to “get” on first listen, having never heard them before last night. Good songwriting in the burgeoning technical death metal genre? Imagine that; here it is.

What’s more, last night’s show was played as a three-piece, as the band just lost their vocalist. Any available death metal vocalists out there in the New Jersey / New York area? Give them a jingle, but be prepared for the real deal; these guys practice every night.

Give The Binary Code a listen on their MySpace page now, or check them out on their Eastern U.S. tour this summer. You’ll be able to say “I knew them when…”

These guys are solid. Hope they come near pittsburgh this summer.

there have been plenty of good technical death bands. it’s just that people don’t seem to want to listen to anything that isn’t shoveled on them by faceless (pun fully intended) imitators. for instance, when are people going to start talking about anata as one of the best bands to come out of sweden in a long time? they’ve been hacking away at it for ages. or psycroptic, who are finally getting a little recognition for their success with their inclusion at summer slaughter.

enough with this brain drill stuff already. go listen to theory in practice, sadist, or some equally worthy band. if you are unfamiliar with the genre, listen to ATHEIST. there is no better starting point than that.

I actually was in Mana Studios with them when they recorded their 2005 demo with Erik Rutan. I interviewed them…but it never was released. They had so many line-up changes and problems, its good to see they are being recognized now. I hope they can find a vocalist. The demo they have is amazing.

Why isn’t this band signed? I stumbled upon this band at their show with Beneath the Massacre (was on tour with one of the bands on the slot), and heard them from outside, saying to myself, “Is that local? There’s no way.” We hung out with the dudes afterwards at a restaurant, and they totally knew their shit about music too. Not theory, but just music. Very passionate aura coming from those guys. Funny as can shit too.

  6. I knew them when this was all just a dream. Never give up. We believe in the Binary Code and can’t wait for the tour this summer!

they have a friend on their list called ‘biclops’ how has no one ever thought of that one? thats hilarious. Don’t bother checking them out, they blow but that name is stellar

I just saw The Binary Code in NJ on a show that was supposed to be headlined by Heaven Shall Burn. HSB walked out because the promoter apparently sucks.

But I stayed for three bands, and The Binary Code was the best one. They have a new vocalist, but that guy wasn’t quite ready for live performances, so they just played instrumental. By golly, did they sound awesome or what?

  9. [...] The Binary Code in the catacombs of New York’s Lit Lounge a couple of months back was nothing short of astonishing; rarely, if ever, have I seen a relatively unknown band be so [...]
