THIS WEEK IN SOUNDSCAN: P.O.D, NINE INCH NAILS AND ASHES DIVIDE DEBUT, EVERYONE ELSE STINKS IT UP

Thursday, April 17th, 2008 at 7:22pm by

The week ending Tuesday, April 15th had some pretty impressive debuts from P.O.D. (I’m just as surprised as you are), the physical version of Nine Inch Nails’ Ghosts and the first record from Billy Howerdel’s Ashes Divide — but the bigger theme this week were the precipitous drops suffered by last week’s debuts, namely Theory of a Deadman, In Flames, Sevendust, Muse and Joe Satriani who eached dropped between 50 and 100 spots down the charts. Oomph.

The Sword managed to hang on, dropping a mere 43 spots, while Black Tide and Five Finger Death Punch appear poised to drop out of the Top 200 completely next week.

Soundscan chart positions and sales figures, with our snarky commentary, after the jump.

#9 P.O.D. – WHEN ANGELS & SERPENTS DANCE
This Week: 33,582 (debut)

Who woulda thunk people still cared about this band? Not me.

#14 NINE INCH NAILS – GHOSTS I-IV
This Week: 25,807 (debut)

The cumulative sales for this one are listed as 38,270 even though this is its debut week. I suppose they were factoring in the box sets Trent sold last month? I really don’t know. Cume numbers for debuts are often negligably higher than the “this week” numbers due to misinformed record store clerks, but not by so much.

#36 ASHES DIVIDE – KEEP TELLING MYSELF IT’S ALRIGHT
This Week: 15,784 (debut)

Not bad for Billy Howerdel’s new band, but if I were the record label (or him) I’d be disappointed considering the big radio and press push.

#47 LINKIN PARK – MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT
This Week: 11,665
Cume: 2,348,436

#48 BUCKCHERRY – 15
This Week: 11,588
Cume: 1,151,400

#61 KID ROCK – ROCK N ROLL JESUS
This Week: 10,203
Cume: 843,214

#65 NICKELBACK – ALL THE RIGHT REASONS
This Week: 10,028
Cume: 6,726,487

#76 THEORY OF A DEADMAN – SCARS & SOUVENIRS
This Week: 9,132
Cume: 31,123

A big loser after a strong debut week, sliding 50 spots down the chart.

#78 THREE DAYS GRACE – ONE-X
This Week: 8,929
Cume: 1,175,696

#87 IN FLAMES – A SENSE OF PURPOSE
This Week: 8,043
Cume: 28,458

Another big drop, losing 59 spots. Ouch. Koch can’t be happy. Still, I think this has a shot at surpassing sales of their last record.

#89 FLYLEAF – FLYLEAF
This Week: 8,000
Cume: 987,840

Almost platinum and I still don’t think I’ve heard a Flyleaf song.

#90 SEVENDUST – CHAPTER 7: HOPE & SORROW
This Week: 7,994
Cume: 32,967

Dropped 71 spots. Not looking so good for Sevendust.

#91 SEETHER – FINDING BEAUTY IN NEGATIVE SPACE
This Week: 7,792
Cume: 384,538

#99 PUDDLE OF MUDD – FAMOUS
This Week: 7,165
Cume: 212,001

119 MUSE – H.A.A.R.P. TOUR-LIVE FROM WEMBLEY (Cume: 20,103)
128 FOO FIGHTERS – ECHOES SILENCE PATIENCE & GRACE (Cume: 710,512)
131 FINGER ELEVEN – THEM VS. YOU VS. ME (Cume: 97,952)
143 AVENGED SEVENFOLD – AVENGED SEVENFOLD (Cume: 346,339)
145 SWORD – GODS OF THE EARTH (Cume: 12,454 )
150 SIXX:A.M. – HEROIN DIARIES SOUNDTRACK (Cume: 189,740)
157 BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE – SCREAM AIM FIRE (Cume: 160,432)
165 GODSMACK – GOOD TIMES BAD TIMES: TEN YEARS OF GODSMACK (Cume: 219,247)
178 SATRIANI*JOE PROFESSOR ETC (Cume: 12,263)
188 ATREYU – LEAD SAILS PAPER ANCHOR (Cume: 214,881)
196 BLACK TIDE – LIGHT FROM ABOVE (Cume: 25,070)
199 FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH – WAY OF THE FIST (Cume: 106,300)

Way to justify the NIN “debut.”

  • http://DarkTwinCities.com devil

People still care about Trent because he’s a forward-thinking musician, not some band retreading a sound from twenty or thirty years ago like so many of these retro acts (all the Thrash revivalists and the Sabbath-aping The Sword). His music is always interesting while still being catchy. He’s creating bold new sounds and always looking for new methods of creating those sounds and marketing them. He commands a devoted following that transcends the market for this reason.

If only there were more people/bands like Trent involved in Metal…

I hear you devil, but this Ghosts release is in no way close to being metal, or rock, or even catchy.

    The new Inflames is balls.

Alot of these “national” band’s numbers look like local band release numbers. What a joke. And as for national bands’ draw, if most of these acts weren’t on a packaged tour or didn’t have 8 local bands open for them, I bet they couldn’t draw as many as 500 people to a show. Pathetic.

The 80′s gets ripped on more than Paris Hilton, but it was the only time in history when more than a handful of people truly gave a fuck about metal.

  • whatwhy

actually i think the nin album was quite horrible. and the with teeth album what the fuck was that sounds like something from the 80′s. and about the thrash revivalist comment i love all the new bands municipal waste, sss, cross examination would rather listen to that than some rich asshole with his casio keyboard trying to be artistic.

about the in spot. all of the cds sold over the web on his site do not count towards the soundscan chart.

  • calmontellechea

I’d rather listen to some rich asshole with his casio keyboard trying to be artistic than a bunch of teen retards who can’t create the music of their own generation, and have to rip off music that’s 20 years old. At least the rich asshole still tries to do something interesting. Nostalgia is for fucktards.
