It’s been kind of funny to watch Metallica try to be more web-friendly in the years since the whole Napster debacle, hasn’t it? The fucked up part is that they’ve actually done a pretty decent job; I mean, that whole Live Metallica thing is actually a pretty cool idea, regardless of what you think of the band’s output over the past seventeen years.

So now Hetfield & Ulrich Inc. is at it again, and they’ve set up a new website, Mission: Metallica, which will allow fans to “experience the new album before it’s done.” We won’t know what the fuck that actually means (Audio samples? In-the-studio footage? Endless hours of Lars Ulrich contemplating where a Basquiat painting begins and where it ends?) until the site officially launches next month, but hopefully, it will have little to nothing to do with loads, group therapy, Scott Reeder’s alleged lack of skill as a bass player, flushing anything out, or that shitty song from Mission:Impossible II.

Actually, an unmastered demo leaked about two months ago…and it sounds pretty good. Like the missing link between “Justice” and the “Black Album.”

I still love the fact that pre-napster Lars would crow about the early days of the band’s success was due to fans trading their demo tape.

Multi millionares in their 40′s do not record inspired thrash albums. No doubt the record will suck.

Regardless of how everyone seems to feel about the Metallica/Napster “debacle”, they (Metallica) were actually on the right side of that argument, both legally (see the results) and morally (you can’t go into a clothing store and walk out with a shirt without paying – it’s exactly the same thing). The issue is whether they were the right messengers for the message.

I’ve listened to the leaked demo myself.

There are some pretty decent solos in there (but nothing even remotely close to what’s been heard on giants like Justice or Ride The Lightning) but most of us have time to fall asleep before getting to the good stuff in each song.Nothing in there could be tagged by me as actual thrash metal.

The only track I could say is actually an okay song is ”Under Influences”.

And Axl…fucking hilarious comment about Lars and his fucking paintings.Way to go.

I would have preferred to have actually seen content rather than “COMING MAY” when clicking on the site… “under construction” pages are just completely redundant.

That said, I’m still looking forward to the album. The two new live songs I’ve heard were pretty decent.

I agree with vman… rich uptight white men don’t come out with great metal albums.
