I SET MY FRIENDS ON FIRE: FUNNY AS FUCK OR TOO ANNOYING TO LIVE?
Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 at 11:31am by Axl RosenbergHere’s what The Deciblog posted this morning with regards to the above video:
“And how’s this for weirdo irony: Epitaph’s recent signing I Set My Friends on Fire is the first case of a MySpace sensation inking a deal based entirely on a reinterpretation of another MySpace sensation’s work (a batshit crazy “screamo” cover of Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat”). Good for the kids in I Set My Friends on Fire for taking advantage of those desperately out-of-touch carpetbaggers at Epitaph and grabbing the loot — they’d probably find other ways of peddling their wares without a deal, but now they can make music with less distractions. As you can see from the video above, Matt and Nabil seem like pretty funny guys and obviously don’t take themselves too seriously. And the songs on their MySpace page — despite drawing from a somewhat limited palette — are proof that ironic screamo is the only tolerable form of screamo. Since society is getting dumber by the minute, Matt and Nabil could make a killing amongst their 89,000 MySpace friends; when the actual record comes out in Fall 2008, though, they may be the only ones laughing.”
Now, I don’t have a problem with humorous metal so long as it’s accompanied by something resembling musical talent; which is to say, I’m with The Deciblog on this one. What could I Set My Friends on Fire possibly hope to be, other than metal’s answer to Afroman?

“humorous metal” made me think of Dread Zeppelin. i first heard of those guys from reading Metal Edge back in like 92-93, and i heard it was actually Robert Plant’s favorite Led Zep cover band :-D. i’m sure there’s tons of youtube videos of them out there, you guys shd do a story :-D
I have to say, that video made me laugh so much.
I don’t really know what I think about these, but yeah, good on them for potentially making a bagful for a joke.
What a bunch of stupid highschool shit. This is not metal in the first place, but if you want to hear “humorous metal”, listen to Crotchduster.
What TITAN said.
Wow. This… this is pretty awful.
wow, a non-funny version of Crotchduster with scenester fucks. great.
[...] :: Is I Set My Friends On Fire a joke? [...]
well the first clip was funny. but everything after that…not so much.
i would’ve loved to see them do a screamo parody of “trapped in the closet” while that was still relevant though.
What the fuck did I just spend four and a minutes of my life watching, and more minutes writing about? You honestly need to stop with this comedy crap. It’s two guys who need a job (far away from recording equipment) messing about. I can’t classify as music in any form at all, and if I was meant to review this for a zine of some sort, I wouldn’t do it. This has no musical merit.
Not to mention that the “”band”" name is a direct reference to Aiden’s retarded “Burn Your Friends” motif they whap all over their shirts. I thought you guys liked metal?
The taco joke is too similar to the “milk was a bad choice” scene in Anchorman. Worse, they completely stole the pen bit from an old episode of The Kids in the Hall. ZERO respect for this.
