The thing with the music industry these days is that you don't need them. They're are numerous distribution companies that a band can use to make the music available. They aren't super expensive and take of cut of your sales rather than upfront payment. Next to that you can pay a publicist to help out getting placements in magazine/newspapers/radio. Labels can offer debt. Debt you owe for the recording and debt for your tour support. If a band is able to find some investors who can front money for tours and advertising you would do well. I guess the idea is if you start a label it can be a small business and you can apply for loans from a bank and get possible arts/small business grants from the federales. Labels are stupid. All you need is money and contacts and you are good to go. Now if I could only get the cash.....

I loved these guys way way back when the sounded like Helmet, once they started sounding like the Doobie Brothers I tuned out. That being said, I respect what they do and how they have conducted themselves business wise and with the fans all these years.

Clutch have gotten as far as they have today without much mainstream support, and they do have a rabidly hardcore fan base (deservedly so).

I think it could be a good move.

I hope that Neil's side project The Company Band will have future releases put out on Weathermaker as well. That 4 song EP is a damn tease. I wish they did a full album. The songs not only rock, but on repeated listens, you really hear the dark tone of the lyrics. It obviously sounds alot like Clutch already, but the lyric writing feels different.

Ha! I thought about this last night on the way home from work without having known they were doing their own label, so I'm a bit surprised to see it posted here.

I left my iPod at my desk and was too lazy to go back and get it, so I flipped through my CDs and decided it had been too long since I listened to Beale St.

Driving home, I then thought how I wasn't going to be able to sync up my iPod to get the new NIN album on there. And then thought how sweet it would be if Clutch were to release albums in the vein how Trent did the Ghosts album because they have that fan base that will eat up whatever they shit out. Hell, I'm one of those fans! The music just flows from those guys, and if they were to have their own studio, they could go the digital route without any problems and release an album per year or something sweet like that.

So in short, I'm hoping that they do follow Trent's lead and continue to put out quality music without the record label BS. Good on 'em.

While I can't say for sure if this move is going to pan out for them, I do think that they entire music industry needs to be re-vamped. Perhaps this, coupled with Trent Reznor's shenannagens, will some how jump-start a new way of doing business. *shrug* Who knows at this point.
