GOJIRA OUGHT TO WRITE MITHRAS A BIG, FAT ROYALTY CHECK

MithrasHere I was, along with the rest of the metal literati, heaping praise upon Gojira for their sheer brutality and awesome originality. If ever there was a band in today’s metal scene that was completely different, this was it. Or so I thought until I took the advice of longtime MetalSucks maniac Hibernum and listened to the UK death metal band Mithras.

News flash: Gojira isn’t that original.

Don’t get me wrong; From Mars to Sirius was a fucking excellent album worthy of (nearly) all the praise that it got, the band destroys live and there are certainly plenty of things Gojira does that are original. But let’s give credit where it’s due.

Many of the things that are Gojira’s trademarks were ripped straight from the Mithras handbook. Their overall sense of tonality and riff structure, the full-chord pick scrapes, use of pinched harmonics in a very specific manner, vocal approach…

Listen for yourself. (I recommend “Wrath of God” to illustrate my point.).

They are looking for a live drummer with this post: “Applicants should be familiar with the Mithras material; be skilled with blastbeats / double kick drumming / and have decent general drumming ability.”

That should be changed to, “endless, never ending, eternal, constant double kick drumming”.

I’m betting their live shows cause spontaneous female orgasms from the pummeling.

    Best comment ever, Sammy.

Both bands started around the same time and both bands had first studio albums around the same time (1998/99) I don’t think there has been any ripping off! both good bands. Gojira’s “from Mars to Sirus” isn’t their only album you know!!!!!!

    Lol Sammy.

That got me thinking about Metallica’s “One” video. Towards the end when they stop all that bullshit talking and start playing, the camera zooms in on Lar’s little double bass part. Like, OMG IT’S REVOLUTIONARY DOUBLE BASS!!!

These guys are pretty good. It actually sounds a bit like a cross between Gojira and Formulas-era Morbid Angel.

They’re both heavily indebted to Morbid Angel. Who cares? One just happens to have Mastodon’s melodic leanings.

Clyde has it right. Their both heavily influenced by Morbid Angel, i.e. they care more about song writing than being brutal/technical.

whatever, this blog post sucks because it undermines the unbelievable awesomeness of gojira.

I have been a big Mithras fan for a while and I would never really compare them Gojira.

Wait, wait, wait. All this is coming from the guys who still say that Pantera “might have” ripped off Exhorder? That’s not fair. I would say there are more similarities between Exhorder and Pantera than Mithras and Gojira.

But still, I had never heard of Mithras before now, and they are pretty ripping. Big ups.
