MORE NEW METALLICA RIFFS!

Monday, May 12th, 2008 at 6:42pm by

The responses to the new Metallica music previews in this morning’s post about the new video from MissionMetallica.com were surprisingly lukewarm — and guess what? The band has released a new preview video / plug for MissionMetallica.com featuring several new riffs, just in time for more lukewarm comments from ya’ll.

What say you? Is it a Load/Reload rehash, a desperate attempt to reconnect with their old fans, or a true return to form? Because based on 25 notes we’re certainly entitled to form all-encompassing opinions about whether or not the new album will be any good.

I won’t lie i was pretty impressed by the facts they presented in the last video. And since I’ve never really listened to metallica I can’t say whether it will match up to their old material. I think it’ll be decent. Somewhere between new motley crue and new iron maiden. (read: crap and fuckin’ spectacular).

Anyone who can give a review, whether positive or negative, based on a few seconds of riffs has already made up his/her mind. Pointless.

  • jaime

Sammy makes a good point, but, regardless, can this band REALLY be relevant the way they used to be? The fanboys will love it, the haters will hate it, and likely, it’ll probably be pretty mediocre… certainly not a return to form, but probably not as bad as so many people want it to be…

  • BLACK213

Just from the snippet on the video, it reminded me of some kind of monster (I Hated James’s voice) am not expecting much from it, I got to admit I am hopeful thou it would be nice to have some new true metallica thrash, but afraid they have been too mainstream to long.

  • NuMallCore Pwns Yo Mama

I’d be happy if it were in the vein of “Some Kind of Monster”. If that song had any decent production, better singing, and a solo or two, it would have fit Justice era Metallica. Give that song a good listen and check out all the riffs on it. Unfortunately, St. Anger sounded more like a demo by 13 year olds rather than a full blown album.

  • Dude Manbro

    M-E-H…meh.

  • miguel_g(Peru)

Sammy got it right. It’s too sonn to say if the album is good or bad with just a couple of riffs.

  • Colin

NuMallCore got it right. That song had the makings of a classic. I’m not sure about this testing the audience to see if the riffs are cool marketing campaign, however.

The problem is that too many people are expecting 20-year-old stuff out of 50-year-old dudes. For anyone who’s been listening, Metallica has grown and changed quite dramatically from one album to the next– unfortunately, they haven’t done it with much grace over the past few years. Their work with Rick Rubin should be interesting, to say the least…

Colin got it right. Fuck these guys and their craven “let’s test the waters” attitude. Wal-Mart is more subtle than this before they move in and bulldoze all the local shops.

Fortunately, Metallica can’t bulldoze anymore. It’s like the band has tuberculosis and they’re all wasting away indoors, coughing up blood into a handkerchief, while the rest of the metal world is outside playing, having forgotten completely about the old geezers who keep telling us to get off their lawn.

  • http://www.moshtour.me.uk Mosh

I’ve not even clicked on the “Play” button on the video clip. That’s how much I don’t care about Metallica any more. Saw them twice live *waaaay* back and they rocked, but I’m sorry to say they’re just attention-seeking greedy bastards now. And their records are shit.

  • http://cultclassicmoviereview.blogspot.com You Don’t Know Me

I want to hear full songs but based off of the snippets I heard in that video, i’m definately interested in hearing it.

  • canea

Fans are going to tentatively like it. Critics are going to embrace it. And everybody’s going to forget about it within months.

They can’t recreate the wheel twice in a lifetime. So the best we can hope for is something that doesn’t further soil Metallica’s legacy.

  • http://www.pro-jikts.com Nickmeister

To be fair, I have not dared pressed the play button on any of these videos, but not because I don’t care, but because I don’t want to spoil the surprise of hearing it properly.

I do feel, though, Mosh, that you do care enough to leave a comment, regardless how much you say you don’t care and hate their records.

In any case, I’m looking forwards to hearing what they put out, and think that it should be an interesting listen.

  • vman

think about it, how much inspriration can these guys have to make a quality product anymore? They are beyond rich and are in their 40′s, anything more than auto-pilot would suprise me.

  • Muttweiler

Maybe if they focus on the angst of how bad their last album sucked and channel it… bah, how does that override the fact they have more money than God… AUTO PILOT IT IS!!!

  • http://disturbedargentina.blogspot.com nakho

i hope this album of metallica will be aceptable…
i put metalsucks.net on my blogroll in http://disturbedargentina.blogspot.com
    this is a great web!!!
    see yaa….

  • ERiK

Suicide, I’ve already died, You’re just the (funeral?) I’ve been waiting for……. What the fuck is wrong w/ Hetfield. Did his little kids write those lyrics for him?

And the way he phrases his lyrics, they’re like children’s songs.

  • http://www.myspace.com/bannisterslash Bannister Slash

True, Metallica have sucked it hard for a long time now. However, I’m willing to give them one last shot. This is your last chance, Metallica!

At least they moved on from Bob Rock. If anyone can push them, it’s Rick Rubin.

They’re never going to touch ‘Master,’ ‘Justice’ or ‘Lightning.’ That’s like asking Slayer to make another album as solid as ‘Reign In Blood.’ Slayer, however, never recorded anything as gay as ‘Re-Load’ or that dumbass CD with the orchestra.

  • jesse blake

    jaime

You got it right man. I’ll put myself in the fanboy catagory for this one, because no matter what they do now and in the future will always be worth at least a first listen from me.

Haters will hate it no matter what. Nothing will change regardless of how good or bad it is. I can’t really blame people for not liking Metallica after the huge changes they’ve made, because let’s face it, Load, Reload, and St. Anger were not metal albums. They were more in the hard rock genre for me. Not to say I didn’t dig the hell out of them(excluding St. Anger), but I think they just got everyone’s expectations way too high before putting out stuff like that.

That said, the new riffs do sound pretty fuckin good. They’re definitely a light at the end of the tunnel of doubt.

  • Muttweiler

I feel the same way about Testament but remember record sales to 14 year olds is what makes the world go around so they probably are writing towards kids. Fucking Hanna Montana will probably outperform Ozzfest this year… something is wrong with this planet… FUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!

  • Muttweiler

That comment was at Bannister…I type slooooooowwwww.

  • Jimmy Lafaman

To comment on what Bannister said, look, Slayer has written the same record over and over and over and over again. They’ve never grown or gotten any better. I love Metallica from Kill to Anger mainly because every record is different from the next… from thrash/speed metal, to melodic/blues, to covers, to hard rock…they take risks, on Master it was rewarded and St. Anger not so much, however, they’ve written different records (maybe Load/Re-load are quite similar I will agree), but other than that you can’t knock them for NOT releasing the same sh*t every other year like Slayer did. Metallica has nearly sold 100 million records, and you haters couldnt sell a million candy bars non-the-less albums.

The new stuff sounds pretty promising… I won’t categorize it just yet because those exerpts are probably not the final versions anyway. I’m not expecting it to smash Bullet or Trivium because they are young and taken the best of Metallica, Pantera, Megadeth, and Maiden in their prime and mashed it together. Metallica isn’t going to try to be anyone but Metallica and people are entited to opinions, but even with St. Anger, their career is far from mediocre *cough* like Slayer.

  • Bane Mason

Hey, come guys, give them a little support. This album will be their best since Black or maybe even Justice. Considering how old they are, how long it has been, I’d say that this is great.

  • BLACK213

I’m going to download their new cd then I’m going to delete it HA that’ll show em!

  • http://www.sithomeandrot.com/celebs/ manny

Jimmy Lafaman: it’s nice to meet one of Mr. Hetfield’s relatives, even if it is on the interwebs.

Just a note, Slayer does and always has pwned the shit out of Metallica. I LOVED old Metallica, but Slayer was and still is their daddy.
