SCARS ON BROADWAY SIGN WITH INTERSCOPE; WHY?

Monday, May 12th, 2008 at 2:38pm by Vince Neilstein

System of a Down’s Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan now have a release date and a record label for their Scars on Broadway project;  July 29th and Interscope. Scars on Broadway released the song “They Say” a few weeks back, generating mixed reactions and a heated debate in our comments section. Listen to the track below.

I’m scratching my head as to why Malakian and Dolmayan, very established musicians who seems quite capable of generating buzz and releasing a record on their own, would sacrifice some of their potential revenue by chosing to go the major label route. Scars could easily pull a Reznor / Radiohead, go the DIY method and do just fine. Or are they so well-off from System at this point that the money doesn’t matter and they just want to get the music out to as many people as possible? Seeing as barely anyone recoups these days, maybe they’re smart to take the advance and run…

Vince, you argument could be applied to a number of different artists. Scars on Broadway may not have the cloud or pull as you may think. Plus theres really no ‘advance’, the record is already done. All thats left is marketing (nothing to sneeze at though).

I think they feel they can get onto more store shelves and digital outlets like this, plus they prob get more points on this deal than a standard contract.

Im sure they looked at all their options well. Plus they would be associated with a ton of other UMG artists.

Oh and Radiohead and NIN are 5x more popluar too.

  5. [...] (System of a Down’s Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan) to release album on Interscope. Metalsucks thinks this is kind of stupid, and so do I, since great minds think alike. Written by Seth Werkheiser > Morning Buzz | 8:00 am | [...]

Why were they signed? Why did you dedicate a post to them? How many other sites are posting about them right now? How much has Interscope paid for this publicity?
