Actually, after listening again I’m going to say that the real guitarist just came up with a very basic riff that happened to sound like Pantera, but not quite.

1. Drums are off by a noticeable margin.

2. Every 3rd or 4th note is not the same as “A New Level” and after the intro the riff is repeated instead of going into the stop-start muting that Pantera is known for.

If you look closely, she’s obviously not playing at all. It’s all her rhythm guitarist and drummer. Her amp probably isn’t even on. Besides, the crowd is full of 13 year old girls and 45 year old men living with their mothers. They don’t appreciate Pantera, no matter how much Madonna ravages their music. Also, Andrew’s probably right – they may not even have known they were covering Pantera.

Great vid. I love the shots of the audience where people realize they’re supposed to headbang but don’t know how.

I don’t at all have a problem with this type of genre clash. Why isn’t Madonna allowed to play a Pantera riff, when pretty much every metal act in the world has covered at least one Depeche Mode song?

Good call on this one. Whether it’s good or not, it’s still a tribute. This isn’t the fucking he-man Madonna hater’s club. At least she had some damn respect for one of the greatest bands in history. Maybe that was the one thing some of her fans needed to start opening up and listening to metal at some point. I know that’s a little far fetched, but shit.. everyone has to start somewhere. It’s definitely an acquired taste to some people.

The point you are all missing is that Madonna, regardless of her genre or talent level, is quite simply the greatest musical marketeer of her or any generation. Never has anyone made so much out of so little actual musical talent. She is a brilliant business woman, plain and simple.

I never have nor ever will own a Madonna CD or even one-song download, let alone any merch, but you’d have to be a complete moron to not see her business acumen. She could burn $100 bills to keep warm and use other $100 bills to wipe her ass ’til she dies and STILL laugh at all of us from the even larger pile of $100 bills she’d be sitting atop.

This one kind of hits me like the Prince half-time show deal where he covered the Foo Fighters.
Now I hold Dime in much higher reverance than Dave Grohl, but I think it was to be a surprise for people that really pay attention to music, (us), and less of a treat for the Madonna fans. Now if Madonna did a harmonic dive bomb, then I would have been fucking astounded! Hit that sucker and we’d be having a different conversation!
