A BETTER PANTERA COVER THAN MADONNA

Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 10:52am by Vince Neilstein

The Progressive Nation tour hits New York City for two sold-out dates at the relatively intimate Terminal 5 next week, and we are beyond psyched. We’ve been talking about this damn tour since November for chrissakes, well before dates were announced.

A lot of folks I know that are going to Progressive Nation are least excited about the tour’s headliner, the mighty Dream Theater (the tour also features Opeth, Three, and Between the Buried and Me). To thee I say, you guys are fucking fools. Get over the need to prove yourself br00tal and enjoy one of the best, most enduring, and talented progressive metal bands of all time.

Take their cover of Pantera’s “Cemetery Gates,” featuring a battery of guest musicians and a Mega-special guest solo. What other band would choose this Pantera song as their homage? Few could even pull it off, let alone with this degree of awesomeness.

Between the Buried and Me covered it on their covers album. It was pretty cool I thought.

  2. Wayne says:

Yeah, they’re all find and good when they’re playing Cemetary Gates, but their talent is all for nothing with those sad excuses for songs they have. I went to Prog Nation the other night, and Opeth completely blew them out of the water. I had to leave during DT b/c I was so bored. They’re so nerdy and pretentious it’s unbearable to listen to them. It’s just listening to a bunch of wonks show off how many notes they can play at the quickest speed. Borrrrr-ing.

  3. Jay says:

Totally didn’t expect Mustaine on the solo, so awesome! This was badass, thanks for posting!

  4. Gibbo says:

Oh my fucking god. I got shivers O_O

  5. ozzyzak says:

I agree Wayne. Me and a friend went up to see this tour when it came through our area.

While him and I can appreciate the extreme talent this band has, we found ourselves nodding off. Just seemed kinda like watching a bunch of dudes up there and wank for an hour and a half, we just left early. Props to those who love them but, not for me I guess. BTW, I’ve seen them three times and left with the same experience every time.

Also, nothing to do with not being brutal, I can appreciate any music if it’s good but it was just lame to me.

  6. Sammy says:

I sort of agree with ozzyzak. I’ve seen Dream Theater once and was amazed – floored in fact – at the musical virtuosity. But except for Mike Portnoy, they seemed to lack soul. Labrie leaves the stage for these long, extended voids to let the virtuosos prove they are, well, virtuosos. The songs get lost in the process.

As for this particular cover: pretty mega-awesome and Mustaine’s solo added a very ‘deth sound to the song.

Mustaine really is the coolest asshole on the planet. And underrated as a great guitarist. I’m hard pressed to find a better rhythm metal guitarist (who can solo like a motherfucker when he wants to).

  7. Jay says:

    @ Sammy

I recently saw Megadeth in Atlanta back on 4/20 and they blew the roof off. I couldn’t agree with you more on Mustaine, and man that guy can shred…just on Hangar 18 alone was amazing!

  8. AJ says:

I couldn’t get what Mustaine was playing. Seemed just like noise.

Maybe it’s ‘coz I was expectin something similar to the original solo.

But Petrucci was his classy self. Awesomeness indeed.

  9. jesse blake says:

Okay, well, I have tons of respect for Dream Theater, and for everyone for doing this tribute. BUT.. how can anyone say this song(pretty much the most beautiful song Pantera ever wrote) wasn’t completely destroyed?

The vocals were alright until Burton Bell got on there and made a complete ass of himself, and the guitars were alright until Mustaine got up there. To me Dime did a fucking amazing job on that solo on the original. So much feeling and overall groove that you just can’t help but love it. Dave Mustaine is an amazing guitarist, but he completely murdered that one in my opinion.

Dream Theater would have been way better off by themselves.

  10. 4k1v4 says:

I was half expecting dimebag’s ghost to show up and start shredding. Now I’m half disappointed.

  11. ERiK says:

I always thought James Labrie sounded like an elf. who’s the heavy guy who sings after James Labrie? He did a pretty good job. Burton Bell was fucking lame. Fuck fear factory too.

Mustaine has a lot of balls to do a solo after Petrucci. Mustaine has his moments in his own music, but he sounded like a hack compared to Petrucci on this.

  12. Carlos says:

    Burton Bell sounds like crap…sorry!

  13. amy says:

Mustaine is awful on this. I don’t get people who dig Mustaine as a lead player at all. He has the shittiest tone, for one. And what’s more, it doesn’t seem like he’s progressed beyond picking fast with pedal notes. Which is fine ’cause his solos were a punky counterpoint to the hyper-technical solos of ‘Deth hired guns — and made Megadeth fuller and better. But he’s not good as a solo player.

Brilliant songwriter and major riff machine for 3 albums, major accomplishment! Hiring Poland and Friedman, great ideas! Leaving Metallica, best for all! Guitar god? NO.

  14. ERiK says:

Well said Amy. I had a chance to have lunch w/ ex-deth drummer Chuck Behler and he said that Dave had a tin ear. The guys in the band used to describe his tone as Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz back in the day (especially during the peace sells era)…. hahaha.

  15. it’s cool and whatnot…but, for those who’re fortunate enough to’ve seen PanterA before the shitfuckin’demise, know that it ain’t got jack on the real deal…..know it! rock it! show it!

  16. TITAN says:

+It wasnt that bad of a cover, really.
+John Petrucci really kicks so much ass.
    +RUSSELL FUCKING ALLEN.
    +Sound production was really clean.

    -That Fear Factory queer.
    -Dave’s solo.

  17. jesse blake says:

    TITAN

You said everything that needed to be said about that in just a few simple phrases.

  18. Conor says:

Titan, wtf? I was so gonna comment on this video. Fuck you for saying it all.

Wait, can I still say that I hate Dream Theater more than Madonna? =X

  19. bob says:

That was really cool. LaBrie did the vocals surprisingly well.

  20. Factor says:

    + Mike Portnoy

    - Looked like they were reading the lyrics

  21. Nick says:

Saw this on the Gigantour DVD. The fact that they fucked Dime’s name at the end says it all.

  22. damienk says:

    Anybody notice the very end?
    “Dimebag” Darrell WILLIAMS?!

Uh, it’s a tribute right? Get the guys name right.
It’s Abbott. The years are wrong too…

  23. Sammy says:

Mustaine, for all of his ego assholeness has always known when to hire the better hired gun. But he’s no hack. You’d be surprised at how much lead work is actually that of Mustaine – not just solos but also lead riffs throughout. Not to mention he’s written a ton of ‘deth solos that he has admitted he could write but not play as well as his “hired guns”.

So yeah, he is a guitar god.

  26. manny says:

    +1 to Titan’s remarks.

Dave’s solo sounded like he was choking a cat. He sucks asshole as a lead player especially when butted up against a shred machine like Petrucci.

I totally went to PN for Opeth, but do like Dream Theater and they were great at the show. If you play guitar and actually appreciate it, it’s next to impossible not to love hearing Petrucci do his thing.

  27. zh says:

wow, disappointing. that made me appreciate pantera even more. dime had an amazing southern-bluesy way of playing where every note was dripping with soul. petrucci’s version, though he’s talented, completely lacked emotion.

i agree they should have skipped on all the guests (especially burt).

  28. Dvmetallica says:

Petrucci is fucking beast, but Mustaine fuckes up the solo a bit. but dont get me wring, dave can shred. he’s awesome, but not in here
    RIP Dimebag

  29. CJ says:

Goddamn. I was really hoping that Burton wouldn’t fuck it up. From a huge Fear Factory fan- that really sucked.

  30. Slaughterhouse says:

To those who say Dream Theater is boring, which your all intitled to your opinion, you guys are fucking nuts…These guys rip and they are called a PROG band for a reason…Maybe thats why James leaves the stage for awhile to let them rip their instrumental sections…duh……and Mustaine did slaughter that solo…JP would have played if flawlessly and he did a great job of matching Dime’s tone…Dimebag is my favorite guitarist of all time with JP running second…So to watch my 2nd favorite player play my Favorite guitarist song and do a great job at it, well…this can’t get any better…again though, JP should have done the solo!!!!!!!!

  31. Slaughterhouse says:

Who ever edited this video and spelled his name wrong and put the wrong years…….FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!
