POLL: IS THE NEW WAVE OF THRASH THE FUTURE OF HEAVY METAL?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008 at 12:17pm by

There’s lots of talk about thrash these days. Amidst killer “comeback” records by the likes of old-schoolers Testament, Exodus, and Death Angel, there’s been a spate of signings of young up and comers who hawk the thrash sound. Muncipal Waste, Warbringer, Bonded By Blood, Evile, etc are all young bands that ape the classic thrash sound to some degree. Not to take anything away from these bands, because they’re certainly talented — but the mass signing of old-school sounding thrash bands begs the question: is this a true revival, or a passing trend?

The new wave of Thrash Metal is the best thing to happen to metal since metal “Died” around ’94-’95. no, it’s not a passing trend. Thrash is the purest, most righteously raging form of metal, ever. Finally, a long overdue re-ascension to the throne is upon us. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THRASH ‘TILL DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FUCKIN RIGHT NICK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am ALL ABOUT classic Thrash, but these new bands don’t really do it for me. I think the problem is that they sound SO MUCH like 1983 again. I don’t need a rehash. Bring back Thrash, sure, but there has to be some evolution. And on top of that these kids are young and write really dumb lyrics. I’m not young anymore and it just comes across as stupid.

I’m still buying the albums, I just don’t think it’s going to last, particularly since there are already so many of these acts.

    Right on, Brother!

    Re:Devil
Dude, give it a couple years/albums these bands will have grown into their own styles, put the semi-silly lyrics behind them, and write more cerebral socially conscious stuff. right now the scene is celebrating classic thrash. as well it should. If you’re looking for evolution, check out Skeletonwitch, its classic thrash that sound like no one from the 80′s. The number of bands playing this genre of metal again only lends credence to the idea that this is the Metal revolution we’ve all been waiting for.
    HAIL THRASH METAL, FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I almost like the idea in theory, and some of the blackened thrash bands from a few years ago were pretty great, but most of the neo-thrash I hear is given such a dull production treatment and put together so by-the-numbers that it’s boring as fuck. Always the same experience for me with one of these thrash revival albums: first track – “fuck yeah! thrash til death!” second track: “cool, thrash!” third track: “you guys bringing anything new to the table besides this here thrashin?” 4th track is always by a different band, because by that point I’m bored and listening to something else. A lot of these bands need to listen a little harder to their Coroner and Sadist albums to get some ideas about atmosphere and character and just generally trying a little harder.

But really: the appeal of thrash from the jump was that it was new, not that it was celebrating something that the band members’ dads had been into. Bottom line: neo-thrash is the Happy Days of metal.

    Re: JD
While you raise some valid arguments… why such a spoilsport/Douchebag? look at all of the other major metal genre’s: Black, Death, Doom, and Power Metal. All of these have maintained a healthy presence in the scene over the last 15 years. The missing ingredient of metal radness is thrash. up until now thrash has been seemingly forsaken as a viable metal option. Even if this new wave ISN’T destined to take over, at the very least it’ll bring thrash metal back as a meaningful force in the scene again. besides… The “Neo-Thrashers” (Read:Lame terminology) have brought a much needed fun factor back into metal.

but this new stuff is so fucking mediocre, i mean “thrash till death”,holy satan that saying is really fucking annoying

and this new thrash is so dull, and the lyrics are crap

there is some new stuff i do like though, but that’s because it mix’s in with death metal

I’m pretty damn excited about this revival. Metal is fun again, it’s creative, technical (for the most part) it’s about the music and not the image – though Thrash and Speed DO have a pretty killer image!!!

But yeah, already I’ve noticed some real shit acts. But then again, every musical movement and genre had a whole lot of shit in it – even the NWOBHM. For every great band that pops up, there’s about 5 or 6 shit bands that go largely unnoticed (for obvious reasons!) and for every 5 or 6 shit bands that somehow pop up there’s one great band that goes largely unnoticed (for VERY, VERY unobvious reasons!)

Overall, I’m very excited and let’s hope that this movement spreads and mops the floor with metalcore and emo losers!

P.S. Watch out for ‘Raptor’ within the next year or two! (my band!)
