IGN: NEW DISTURBED RECORD IS “DATED”

Monday, June 9th, 2008 at 2:57pm by

I’d like to borrow a page out of the Idolator playbook, in which the all-summarizing last sentences of reviews are used to gauge reactions of an album. Because, really, why bother reading the entire thing? Take this one from IGN about Disturbed’s latest Indestructible [sent in by MetalSucks reader / Disturbed apologist Revrant]:

Disturbed are in the difficult position of trying to stay relevant at a time when bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Heaven & Hell are back to headlining arenas, and newer bands like Children Of Bodom are flying the traditional metal flag proudly. Unfortunately, there’s just too much of the very recent past on Indestructible to move away from it. So in effect, it sounds a bit dated…already. Perhaps in a few years the band will find its flow on the nostalgia circuit with Staind and Papa Roach.

After that, do I really need to listen to this album? In the name of diligent journalism, of course not! Furthermore, it highlights the inevitable nu-metal nostalgia tour, coming to a shed near you in 2010.

I actually did listen to the album, out of pure curiosity, and yeah, I was transported back in time to the year 2001. A time when frat guys thought they were hardcore by pumping this out of their Jeep wranglers during a very heterosexual “shirts vs. skins” pick up b-ball game.

    i deleted it immediately.

  • TJ

How long until the mouthbreathers start in on this post??

“The new Disturbed record is the best album to ever be released since Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish!!”

  • Kye

Well as someone who doesn’t completely hate Disturbed(aka I liked Stricken and everything else kind of annoys me but it’s bearable), I must say the new ablum is probably the best thing the band’s ever done. That doesn’t mean it’s good, but it’s not complete trash.

Doesn’t remind me of the numetal days tho. At least not nearly as much as when I found my old copy of Machine Head’s “The Burning Red”. Numetal this cd is not…hard rock with a slightly more tolerable monkey than previous efforts and some electronics…sure.

I can’t wait for their set at Mayhem Fest though, it’ll be the best pre-Slipknot snack break in the history of concert snack breaks.

  • Revrant

TJ Says: They already have TJ, they already have, I’m absolutely not a Disturbed “apologizer”, but I knew the idiots like chris here would love the chance to bash them, I did it for them. ;) I sincerely doubt he listened to a note of the album, which is what actually makes his bashing pretty funny.

Kye: Why is it I keep hearing Stricken being mentioned as a decent song on here? Three times now, I didn’t care for it, it was one of their more lyrically shallow, musically straight forward songs, didn’t have much going for it really.

  • TJ

Revrant- you missed the sarcasm. By mouthbreathers, I was talking about the Disturbed fans.

And before you start the war on me in this post- I’ve given the band more than a few chances. They just suck.

  • amy

Um, not to be all grammary here, but the term is ‘apologist’. Eg, Revrant is a Disturbed apologist.

  • 36Thoughtless

    Disturbed Metacritic Scores by Album:

    Believe-62, which is considered good
Ten Thousand Fists-59, which is fair, but just shy of good
    Indestructible-N/A, yet, anyway

It’ll be interesting to see what the professional reviews continue to say.

  • The Pig In Zen

Could someone please explain to me why a Disturbed fan would come to a website dedicated to metal?

  • 36Thoughtless

Well, for the record, I don’t disagree with the opinion that Disturbed are metal. I think the big question here, or at least the one Revrant seems to be arguing about, is whether Disturbed is as generic and repetitive as Axl, Vince, and many commenters here (myself included) think.

A better question is why Revrant cares what people he considers “meatheads” think about Disturbed so much.

  • Dr. J

Or why us meatheads care about Revrant so much.

  • Kye

Revrant – I can’t speak for the other members, but I liked Stricken because I liked the guitar work. As for it’s lyrics, I like Avril Lavigne (do I care if it makes me less “metal”? No, not really) so obviously lyrics aren’t something that I feel make or break a song(tho, as a singer and writer, I do appreciate well written lyrics…and on the note of Stricken, the imagery of a “blood stained hurricane” is kind of cool). And musically, I don’t think anything they do is really impressive, however I think in terms of songwriting and crafting a catchy anthem style song, Stricken is one of their highlights in that department.

  • Tommy Leebowitz

I couldn’t agree with the IGN review more.

  • Revrant

See this is where I make a reference to me being Hitler and having too many fronts, but I’m too tired to do that AND type all of this out.

TJ: No, you missed MY sarcasm, and yeah, blah blah blah, everyone here most definitely gave Disturbed a chance despite not being able to comprehend anything lyrically they’ve done and nitpicking about fucking guitars and drums.

amy: Could someone explain to me why someone came to meathead metal site to care about literacy?

36Thoughtless: Well keep in mind those count extremely bias insulting reviews like the IGN one, except from really “hip” “in the know” magazines, if it isn’t professional, then I never bother, regardless of the album in question. This “elitist” critic smarmy review style Rolling Stone popularized is really shitty, and most of the magazines in each of those focus on it, sometimes I wonder if they even listen to any of the albums they get that aren’t Beck or Bjork.

The Pig In Zen: Could someone explain to me your pretentious name and elitist attitude?

36Thoughtless: People here, and this dawned on me the more meatheaded people got, is because Disturbed don’t play their instruments like maniacs, and that’s their focus, so at least I understand it. Also, I’m not an “apologist”, I never said they were perfect or even the best newer band like some idiot fanboys do.

J and T: I think you two just noted a vicious, but fun cycle, hm? ;)

I don’t think what you like outside of the genre makes you more or less “metal”, though if you’re extremely critical of certain bands for not being “metal” enough while having those likes it does make you a look like a prick, I guess.

Kye: You liked the lyric because the imagery was cool? Well…I dunno as though the two of us agree on what impressive lyrics are I guess, if you like that type of imagery and guitar work you might enjoy the title track from Indestructible too.

Tommy Leebowitz: He agrees with comparing Whitney Houston to Disturbed, therefore he’s actually heard the Whitney Houston song in question.

    Everybody with me: Negated! =)

  • Revrant

Excuse any fuck ups, I’m one tired son of a bitch, I need my fucking tea.

  • http://www.myspace.com/evilsammy Sammy

I’m a Disturbed apologist, but Revrant, you seem to care way too much about this stuff. Man, do you have a job? Do you really need to debate to death every single minute detail?

As for the new album, it starts and ends well, but the middle is a bit monotonous. Maybe more listens will change my opinion. It certainly is not “nu” metal, as every song has a shred-style solo. And the guitar tone leans more towards heavy than fuzz.

  • http://www.splashnewsonline.com chris

nice reverant but I did listen to the album. I put Disturbed into the same category as Avenged Sevenfold. They’re bands for people who want to listen to metal but are way too scared to get into real metal. Think of it as metal with training wheels and while most good bands progress and grow with their sound, Disturbed is still pumping out the same old formulaic material.

  • Revrant

There are plenty of people that care a lot about this crap, I don’t answer personal questions, and furthermore what’s your point Sam?

With the exception of The Curse I feel it does get a little monotonous, but it picks up big time before the end.

krys: Oh I’m sure you did, I’m sure you did, still can’t spell my damned name, “real metal”, you do realize “real metal” would be the metal that started metal, not the extreme ape-rock pussy/death-obsessed fringe-shit this site loves, right?

Disturbed have changed and evolved quite a bit, they just refuse to become obsessed with technical skill. My God, did you just accuse Disturbed of having a formula? For shame, how dare they, to think any band(including “real” metal) have any kind of formula they like.

  • Dave D

“They’re bands for people who want to listen to metal but are way too scared to get into real metal. Think of it as metal with training wheels”

Thats the most retarded thing I’ve ever heard. Not because I disagree or anything (I do disagree, but I can see what you meant. It’s not completely wrong) but because who would possibly be scared to listen to a certain type of music?

  • Revrant

Huh……Well…Perhaps religious zealots might be afraid to listen to Black Metal, going on the assumption they knew what it was, otherwise I’m at a loss for words.

  • http://www.myspace.com/evilsammy Sammy

    RE: “monkey sounds”

I can understand someone’s taste and thinking the monkey noises are stupid or obnoxious. However, how are they any worse than 12 songs with the zero dynamic changes of “strangled cats” or “broken glass gargling ogre sounds” as vocals?

  • Revrant

Or the fact that they rarely do them anymore…

  • disturbed kik ass

i jus saw disturbed at download and the fukin rule, and i like this album and chocalate starfish so TJ u can suk my dick

  • TJ

@ disturbed kik ass- alright, it’s a plan. what time do you get let out of day care today? i’ll be by…

  • disturbed kik ass

alrite im out at 3 dick sucking can commense at 3:25, o and linkin park r terrible

  • alex

loved the album. say what you like, try to generalize, or categorize it, but the music’s amazing-that’s the true spirit of metal.

  • Mark

I personally enjoyed the album. I respect people’s opinions in not liking it…save for the crap that chris posted. “Metal with training wheels”… All I’m going to say to that is that you are a complete and utter idiot. And honestly, nobody really gives a damn about how “hardcore” somebody is. The only people who care about it are losers with no lives, friends, or future. I’ll just leave it at that for now.

  • Stephen

I think Disturbed is a really good band. There new album is good, but i prefer their 1st or 2nd album. & I agree with Mark. “Metal with training wheels”, wat the hell. & Y do ppl keep saying that Stricken is the best song on 10,000 Fists. There r better songs on that album.

  • Luke

I agree with Stephen anf Mark, even the title track ten-thousand fists is better than stricken =P

  • redbeard

In a site like metal sucks… why even review metal. It’s like someone who hates horror movies becoming a horror movie critique… big surprise…they hate every movie. Also I’m tired of metal enthusiast entertaining themselves by making gossip amongst themselves with comment about what people are wearing. Stop being an image whore! Listen to music because you like it… don’t listen to it if you don’t… otherwise shut the fuck up and stop bitching.

  • ummm fuk u guys metalowns

Ummm fuk u guys metalowns and disturbed fukin owns so suk my cok u mother fuckers

  • Tyler

if disturbed sucks so much how come theyve had 3 #1 albums in a row, have gona multi-platinum on all three previous albums, and are selling out concerts. its obviously not cuz they suck. so they must be doing something right. theyre a great band with talent and if you cant see that than you must be fucking retarted. and “metal on training wheels”, who the fuck says that. i love disturbed and there amazing but i listen to heavy music to, ex: threat signal, droid, misery signal etc. if you dont know who those bands are check em out, there way heavier than disturbed.

  • http://internet Luke

I think that if you like something listen to it if you dont leave it and dont shit on every1 elses life butt-munch

  • mike
