METALSUCKS READER “REVRANT” HANGS HIMSELF AFTER BEING BULLIED ON THE INTERNET

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008 at 11:58am by Vince Neilstein

Sam LeesonNot really. But that’s the first thing that popped into my head after reading this report from Daily Mail [via Blabbermouth] that a 13 year-old British boy hanged himself after being ridiculed on the Internet for his tastes in music. The boy, Sam Leeson, was a fan of “so-called Emo music championed by bands such as Blink 182 and Good Charlotte;” not so different from the regular bashings our readers dole upon our good ol’ friend and Disturbed fan Revrant, eh?*

  1. TJ says:

When did ‘crappy pop-punk’ get reclassified as ‘emo’?

I must have missed the memo.

  2. jaime says:

No one kills themselves for reasons that simple, the kid obviously was disturbed (pun COMPLETELY intended) and wasn’t getting some needed help. Sad for his family.

I don’t think the Rev would kill himself, he’d think that’s too elitist, too somehow.

  3. Sammy says:

I think Rev makes some valid points – at times – but just works way too hard, and too often, to prove his points. The result is that he sometimes comes off as a bit whiney.

I prefer when those here state their case without the Blabbermouth-style name calling. Sure, the foul-mouth barbs are cool once in a while, but sometimes it degenerates to something this blog has usually risen above.

And Vince & Axl, if that twit who ends every comment with “’nuff said” does that again, kindly ban his ass. “’nuff said” doesn’t win any argument.

  4. Laura says:

Sam wasn’t at all disturbed he was bullied because of the way he dressed, his music sense and his outlooks on life and he was always smiling and no one could of guessed her was being bullied me included as i was one of his mates!

  5. Muttweiler says:

May Sam find the peace he was missing in this World in the next. Emo or not!

  6. Joe says:

I for one am sorry to hear that Laura. I think it is a shame that kids at a younger age are so susceptible to others’ criticism. Being picked on feels like the end of the world in middle school, high school, or whatever. But life can get better, and it really is too bad your friend just could not hang in there to find out.

  7. TheCount says:

Of course it’s always tragic when a child dies, especially in this way, but I can’t help but feel a little conflicted. I mean, I’m gonna take a lot of shit for saying this, and please note this is only speculation, but maybe things hadn’t turned out this way hadn’t he been so involved in music whose themes revolve around self-pity and anguish, rather then the strength necessary to deal with your problems in a real way.

Bullying is nothing but pure evil, I’m not going to deny that. I’ve been there myself. But I’ve also managed to come out of that ordeal a better man than I was before, and I think everyone has what it takes to deal with problems like this. If you don’t believe me just remember that there is always someone out there who has had it worse than you do, and still made it out.

Suicide is an easy way out, and I’m sorry for saying this but it’s true. I’m not in any way trying to minimize the grief of his familiy or the pain the kid was going through, and I’m sure that at the time it seemed like the only way out for him. I just really think that this is a tragedy that could have been avoided, not by eliminating bullies (because that’s never going to happen), but by reinforcing a healthy self-image in a child so that it has the strength to deal with the shit life hands you.

But at least he’s at peace now, and I’m sure the kidsin his neighbourhood will remember him for the next couple of years when they’re bullying each other, so maybe some good can come from this horrible thing.

  8. Joe says:

I don’t even see the point in this whole “emo” shit. Uhhh, if you listen to the lyrics for the latest Killswitch album, it could be classified as emo. People take lyrics too serious these days. Listen to the fucking music.

  9. catsaremetal says:

    Links don’t work, mayne.

  10. @ catsaremetal: thank you. links are fixed.

  11. roe says:

one less emo fag to kill!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. jaime says:

    Roe,

Wow. Just, wow. Rev, I’ve been wrong about you. Not even CLOSE to the worst poster here. My apologies.

  13. J cantrell says:

I just lost a load of respect for metal sucks! this was a low blow guys

  14. codexnecro says:

i don’t really understand why people make fun of other people for having different taste in music.
i don’t like emo, disturbed, linkin park, blink 182, etc.
so i simply don’t listen to them.
if they come on the radio, i change the channel.
why does anyone give a fuck what other people listen to?
i don’t give people a hard time for listening to music i dislike, cause i know by most peoples standards the music i do listen to is considered crap.
who cares, like what you like and fuck anybody who says you shouldn’t.
there’s no such thing as ’shit’ music, it’s all subjective, we all have different tastes and values and who’s to say what is ‘good’?

  15. Sammy says:

@ codexnecro: You’ll find out if you visit this site long enough, to a lot of people it does matter.

    Because they’re fucking morons.

  16. Eric says:

If you dont like me for listening to emo…….tough shit. I’d still stomp you the same way I would if I was listening to job for a cowboy. I like 80s music too…still would stomp you.

  17. 36Thoughtless says:

Codexnecro, I believe, amongst other things, that subjectivity of a matter does not imply the equality of all opinions concerning that matter.

I’d get into this point more, but I’m tired after work and don’t really want to. Still, I think this statement should satisfy somewhat (key word “somewhat”) your question as far as it concerns me.

  18. suicide is still funny. no matter what u guys say!!

  19. Cam says:

    well said codexnecro

  20. Revrant says:

jaime, somehow you continue to drop to levels of disgust in my mind reserved for Zouavman Le Zouave and Ben Weinman, really classy, and no, you get fucking nothing for retracting, you still disgust me as a person.

Sammy: Whiney eh? Well that’s sweet of you, though as I’ve said before, if I’m given barbs, I give them right back, look to them, not me, for who starts the exchange. I don’t care for your contradiction either, judging by this article and the comments therein I’m not sure where you got “risen above” from.

The post itself, the flattery of parody is usually just that, flattering, but I find no humor or flattery in it when applied to child suicide.

Though I do question continuing to post, I was rather enjoying this place as I thought it a more intelligent version of Blabbermouth until this.

  21. Richaod says:

Recommending people with bad taste good music > ridiculing them.

Because at some point in time, all of us have been that nu-metal kid. Right?

  22. Don’t do it! you have more precious time to waste listening to disturbeds awseome music!

  23. Revrant says:

    “awseome”

  24. mrsfilth says:

    :)

  25. jaime says:

    Rev,

Calm down man, I still think you have terrible, terrible taste in music, but I wouldn’t waste the energy to HATE you… and you only hate me because I take you to task; but secretly we all know you love it, because you can call the pseudo intellectual tough guy online, likely because when you try to do that in real life, you get shut down so fast it makes your ego shrink even further.

  26. dink says:

is that picture really what rev looks like? lol, cuz it would be funny if he turned out to be like a 45 year old man.

  27. blink 182 and good charlotte are not “emo” everyone seems to use the word “emo” for anything that is not metal or radio rock these days. they are pop-punk bands. “emo” includes bands like Dashboard confessional… the slow moody crap. anyway, can’t blame suicide on these pop-punk band’s lyrics, as they are not depressing. the parents are looking for a scapegoat as to not take the blame for not paying attention to their kid when he desparately needed them. shitty parents always want to plame someone else, be it music, tv or video games for their faults in their parenting skills.

and Count – i hear what you are saying about “self pity” and “anguish” in emo lyrics, but have you EVER listened to metal? i love metal, but there is not a lot of uplifting comentary going on.

  28. jesse blake says:

    @jaime

Exactly. I love it when people get on here and pretty much try to make their comments look like a fucking lawyer wrote them. Who the hell says “therein” without their heads up their asses?

I do have to admit, coming from Blabbermouth to this site, I’ve seen a HUGE increase in maturity, intelligence, and actual validity of points made.

  29. TheCount says:

    @thedoomsdaybroadcast:

Actually I’ve usually found that the metal way of thinking is that yes, life sucks shit, and there is very little joy to find in all the injustice we drown ourselves in, but at the same time I (as in the singer, the band, the metal-head) am not gonna take this shit lying down, and therefore I am stronger than the average man for being unafraid to acknowledge the existence of bullshit and face it, rather than live in denial or give up. But of course there are exceptions, but this is how I have always felt towards metal, it’s “philosophy” and it’s way of life.

  30. Sammy says:

    @ Jesse,

Sorry if the vocabulary is over your head. You might want to invest in a thesaurus – er, one of those books that has different words with the same general meaning – or bookmark one on your browser.

I’m not quite understanding your oxymoronic statement. You like Metalsucks because it’s of quotient of intelligence and maturity, yet you don’t want those who comment to “sound like lawyers”. Uh, some of us who actually completed college don’t really want to dumb it down for those of you with larger foreheads. Therein lies my problem with your comment.

  31. Sammy says:

oops – “of its”, not “it’s of”. Damn temporary dyslexia.

  32. yh man, just chill down about it (in agreement with Jamie)! Yh it is “awseome”!

  33. Revrant says:

jaime: Yet you stalk me on every comment I make and post something hateful without even reading it, like the sheep you are, and you don’t “hate” me. Your taste in music is utter shit, and having been told what it is, pretentious counter-for-the-sake-of-it tripe, I know full well. I have to admit your hatred of anything not “hipster” or “pretentious” makes me want to just offer translations every time you post.

BAA BAA BAA BAA-BAA-BAA, BAA BAA, BAA; BAA BAA.

On and on, “take me to task” yet every time you’ve “taken me to task” you’ve ended up on the losing end by screwing up and contradicting yourself while exposing your sheepish taste in life. Be a fucking individual you counter-culture sheep, it feels good, trust me, a lot of people here know about it, I have no doubt.

As for real life, no, I’m extraordinarily well mannered, though I can still be very condescending when taking apart someone’s nonsense view on something(not music of course) factual. The reason I don’t curse and insult people in real life is A) They aren’t fucking twits like you or some of these other assholes and B) Some of them I actually LIKE and wouldn’t want to insult or offend, and C) Well, I actually do sometimes turn into an insulting prick like I have on here when I come across someone incredibly stupid, though I try to restrain myself. Oh, and for the first time I’m going to sound like a “tuff gy”, due to my size and stature, no one “shuts me down” intellectually, or otherwise.

Sammy: You sir, beat me to it, if he doesn’t like the language, go back to fucking Blabbermouth “SLIPKNOT RULZ” “NUH UH AVENGED SEVENFOLD FTW” “OMG IN FLAMES FCK U ALL”, if he finds that preferable to the use of the word “therein”, by all means, he can get out.

“dink”: Fitting name, no, that would be the little boy who committed suicide, I’m in my twenties, jackass.

  34. dink says:

why you insulting me asshole? all i did was ask a question. i can see why everyone gives you a hard time.

  35. 36Thoughtless says:

Revrant, if anything, you’ve made things way more exciting around here than they used to be–not even you directly, but the people like Jaime trying to “take you to task.”

  36. countshock says:

    HA! God I love this.

  37. Revrant says:

dingus, that’s my new name for you, learn to love it.

dingus: “lol, cuz it would be funny if he turned out to be like a 45 year old man.”

That would be insulting you preteen twit, and inferring by asking that I’m some little kid(like yourself), is also insulting, you remind me of my brother. He often hauls off and says some seriously insulting shit then denies having ever said it moments later even if everyone in the fucking room heard him, and even if we have proof.

    Trait? Narcissism.

36: Well, hell, if I wasn’t entertaining I wouldn’t get my own “please commit suicide” article then would I?

  38. Dr J says:

Revrant were you beat as a child?

  39. jaime says:

    Rev,

I don’t like bands for the sake of liking unknown acts, never claimed to, that’s a label you’ve been trying to pin on me for some time now. I’m a HUGE opeth fan, yet their album just debuted at #1 in a handful of countries and in the top 25 in the US. Also a big Tool fan, whose last 3 albums debuted at #1 in America amongst others. I grew up on Metallica (though not into their later stuff), and they were already insanely popular when I heard about them. Devin Townsend I would hardly call underground to anyone who is current with metal. So, you can stop saying i only like obscure bands, cause it’s just not the case.

You couldn’t have me or my tastes pegged further from the truth, i just don’t like shitty, formulaic, trite music the way you do.

I’ll give you a pass on Disturbed, cause that topic’s been done to death twice here.

You like Alter Bridge. And Everclear. That’s it. You loose. Those bands are beyond formulaic, record label assembled, commercial crap. Lowest common denominator, what do we have to do to sell the most records, we have people to address how we look for photo shoots. And yet you call me a sheep, but you are buying up the pre packaged, easily digestible crap labels put out for you to consume.

If listening to bands that put out music THEY like, record sales and money made be damned makes me so sort of hipster, I guess I am.

You, on the other hand, don’t seem to enjoy any metal made in the last 8+ years that has any relevance to the scene. Maybe you just don’t want to find new bands? Maybe the genre has just passed you by and the tastes you grew up on, so now you’re bitter about it and bash music that just doesn’t appeal to you? You seem to be incredibly close minded with metal you listen to. Your listed bands were Black Sabbath (not since the 80’s), Ozzy (not since the 80’s) BLS (never) and Pantera (not since 2000). Maybe you should let the music go and just continue to listen to your artists who haven’t done anything in the last 15-25 years.

  40. Revrant says:

Dr J were you retarded as an adult?

Never said they had to be unknown or obscure, just adhering to a specific “counter-culture” look and attitude perpetuated in the music, which, with Opeth and Tool you proved correct, and Devin.

Oh I see, because anything that doesn’t adhere to that horribly pretentious shape and attitude is trite.

I “loose” she says, I’m not sure if that’s meant to be a knock on my promiscuity with a lack of ‘m or if she really meant to say I “lose”. I like Alter Bridge, their guitar work on the second album, which, being the elitist you are, have not heard, is just downright great, they really fill a void that most music can’t for me, harder, more complex “rock” that isn’t about tits and booze ala Nickleback. I have no doubt you’ll refuse to even consider this, so http://youtube.com/watch?v=yz_j7nVCJJ0 that’s the title track, just to show they are not the same fucking band as many people still(erroneously) believe based on the first album, as with Disturbed, among others.

I mean Jesus, I may hate Linkin Park and Slipsh…knot, but I still make sure I’m well informed about their new albums, to see if they’ve grown into something I enjoy, I don’t take this elitist counter-culture view with music that you adhere so strictly to. For Everclear, hell, I don’t know, it’s pop rock to me, I do like some things that are easy on the ears, if you absolutely hate things that sound good initially, what the hell did music ever do for you when you first heard it? Though, again, stop lumping these bands together, they do stand out in ways from their contemporaries, they have considerably better lyrics, much of Everclear’s lyrics are rather dark, Alter Bridge don’t sing thing one alike with Nickelback, who lyrically are a PC mainstreamed version of DEP.

“If listening to bands that put out music THEY like”, what the fuck kind of logic is that? That sounds like a sheep if I ever heard one, why don’t you strip all of that contrived, pretentious shit away and think to yourself “this is what I like” instead of obsessing over bullshit like that?

“the scene.” Yeah, because the “scene” is what I should be involved in, not my own tastes or likes, that’s another look into how twisted your thought patterns are in regard to music.

Next off, I have preferences, the problem with the metal “scene” right now is it’s largely either taken over by the likes of Godsmack and Linkin Park, whiny *cut myself* music, or really extreme shit that’s played by such horrifying assholes that there’s nothing redeeming about it. Worse still, there’s nothing to like about it, aside from maybe appreciation for their skill, or the urge to headbang really hardcore, but fuck, why bother? Headbanging really hard could be accomplished by any number of new bands that put out really poor albums, nu metal included.

As for the artists you listed, Sabbath I’ll give you, they were strung along on the likes of Ronnie James Dio and Tony Martin, and couldn’t produce anything that really captured what Black Sabbath was, though they were respectable efforts. Fuck you, Ozzy had some truly enrapturing 90s material, and Black Rain, though not atypical of Ozzy, dealt with many worldly themes that I thought felt very timely, sure, it’s not as catchy or as fun, but I don’t give a shit. BLS, well, I’ll let that go, because I know your taste would prevent you from liking a band backed by a very popular non-counter-culture musician. Lastly, Pantera, well I don’t absolutely love and cream myself over Pantera, so I don’t really care what you think they did last was “good” or whatever.

  41. jaime says:

You’re right, sorry I enjoy listening to music put out by musicians who want to hear the style of music they play, not what is going to sell the most records.

An editing clarification, Pantera’s last album of original material was released in 2000, I wasn’t making any sort of value call on anything they’ve done.

BLS is the most boring, redundant band working. Zakk Wylde, though immensely talented as a multi faceted musician, produces fairly boring riffs and excuses to solo real fast in BLS.

Guess what, i just genuinly enjoy the variety of tones and styles an opeth album offers me, the uniqueness of what Devin Townsend does, and the impressive lyrical quality and untraditional musicianship of Tool. You can’t really be elitist about bands who sell so many goddamn cd’s as them.

    Your quote:
“If listening to bands that put out music THEY like”, what the fuck kind of logic is that? That sounds like a sheep if I ever heard one, why don’t you strip all of that contrived, pretentious shit away and think to yourself “this is what I like” instead of obsessing over bullshit like that?

What I meant, perhaps it was unclear, is that I enjoy music that isn’t designed by a label to sell the most copies. I enjoy music that is made honestly, that, if no one came to see them play, they’d still be playing that kind of music. You know, that whole having artistic integrity and not allowing your music to become a commercialized product, homogenized for the masses to enjoy. It’s not being a sheep, it’s enjoying various forms of art because of the basic bottom line of honest, human expression of emotions or ideals. There are plenty of artists with HUGE integrity making various forms of music, ie, Origin, Amon Amarth, Textures, Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, justice, even current metal sucks favs iwrestledabearonce, Sculptured, that i cannot STAND. I form my opinions on my own, not what rock radio tells me is good.

Alter Bridge? Any day of the week I’ll listen to Alice in Chains and take in who they are ripping off.

  42. Revrant says:

Well guys, you see what I mean by her, specifically, being a sheep now? She just basically said “I’m a person who doesn’t like things for what they are, but based upon qualifiers that make them counter-culture or “hip” or similarly unappreciated by the masses, and therefore have no taste unless it is dictated by my “scene”.”

I’m not even replying after that embarassing post of proving my every fucking accusation true, good gracious, to think I even bothered probing.

  43. Sammy says:

Hey Jaime and Rev, do you two realize you’ve basically recycled and re-re-re-re-reiterated your original opinions now about 30 times over? Time to move on and not have to be the one to get the last word. You’re both right; you’re both wrong.

And the next person I read who spells “lose” or “loser” as “loose” or “looser”, I seriously hope contracts pancreatic cancer.

  44. dink says:

    rev,
your right, looking back i guess that was insulting. i just didnt expect you to be older because the topic was about a little kid killing himself and then they threw your name in there. seemed to fit. that, and i dont know many ppl over the age of 15 that like disturbed. dingus

  45. Revrant says:

Sammy: Well that was true, keyword being was, it’s done, she just basically admitted and defended being a sheep because, she’s proud to be one, so at least she isn’t backpedaling like SOME musicians who will remain nameless and standing up for herself.

I’ll give her credit for that.

Dingus, well that’s not true for me, three people I know are in their thirties, are metalheads, and think Disturbed rock, my Uncle, an ex-marine, in his forties, thinks they’re great. I’d say all but two people I know online at least appreciate Disturbed, one happens to have similar musical tastes to a lot of you, but he’s pretty open minded to most things metal or rock.

  46. Zack says:

wow.. how about everyone get the sand out of their respective vaginas and stop fighting over an INTERNET BLOG like a bunch of middle school girls.

  47. Revrant says:

Zack…’Cause…that’s kind of the purpose of having comments on a blog, for people to discuss/debate/argue about the topic at hand.

  48. I didn’t read the article but it sounds like he had more problems than a liking of mediocre music. The internet is not a pretty, fun, safe, or polite place. People who kill themselves are going to do it anyways. You don’t need the internet to push you. That said, I hope emo kills itself.

  49. Revrant says:

That said, I hope this jackass gets run over by a truck, preferably one driven by a hick with those plastic balls on the hitch.

Ever heard of a fucking soul, fiend? Or are you too busy browsing internet sites bashing suicide cases? Try the former sometime, it’s good shit, I guaran-damn-tee you.

  50. Dave D says:

Rev I think you missed the point of what he was trying to say. He meant that if someone kills themself, they were probably so screwed up in the head that they were gonna find a reason/way to do it, even if the internet weren’t involved.

Or maybe you were commenting on his other comment: That he hopes emo kills itself, in which case: What the hell man! Emo is a waste of time, space, energy, and razors. It’s just another one of the ways kids can be “counter-culture”, and get attention.

Oh shit, I hope this doesn’t start a whole emo debate now.

  51. Revrant says:

No I didn’t, he negated his sensible opinion with that crap, you don’t mock a subculture with hope of suicide on an article ABOUT a recent child suicide.

I don’t care about emo subculture, they can have their Linkin Park and Good Charlotte, and plenty of people here are counter-culture for the sake of being so just like those kids, so I don’t really differentiate.

  52. Anon says:

Golly. Gone for a week and this is what I find upon return. A war.

  53. S.A.M.E says:

    OK WOW.
All you people are retarded. No ofence and stop like pissing all over the place becasue of shit people say.
I’m just a little off here, or rather a little late. But I have to put in my few cents worth.

Just a question: Is like everyone on here a male? I am female and everyone I see is a guy, What the fuck Nuggas. (Not trying to be racist)

Linkin Park and Good Charlotte are not emo. To me they are terrrrible. But they’re not emo.

Just cause people have been classified as emo doesn’t mean they cut. So Dave D shut the fuck up.

If you listen to a band’s lyrics who could be classified as emo, it isn’t a waste of time.. Just a waste of your time. Space? Dumbass the only space wasted in this world is the stupid buildings people put in it. Energy? Can I ask what you mean by that? razors… I’ve said something already abut cutting.

Just cause you’ve considered / attempted / or even have committed suicide doen’t mean you’re fucked up. And I am saying this with experience… Do you think I’m fucked up?
You probably do cause well I am sort of sticking up for “emos” Which whom ever invented that term is a fucking douche bag.

Being emo isn’t “Wrong” or “Stupid” ……… being a fucking Cunt about it is. Like who the fuck cares? IT DOESN”T FUCKING MATTER…

    Just a few last words.

    Music is music.
what you like is what you like what you don’t is what you don’t ..
    no shit eh?
So shut the fuck up, piss off, and kick rocks…
    Sounds fun right?

  54. Llewronymous says:

Hey, dink, wotever yo name is, Now all you disturbed h8trs have gone to far. Im 19 and i like Disturbed. Im not some guy with a mental age of a fifteen year old. Im new to this metalsucks blog and i hav to say to most of you guys, reading this blog is worse than reading the metallum encyclopedia which is mearnt to be an encyclpedia for Metal, and not one for dissing bands that are said to be mainstream, core or nu. Sumtimes i wonder if people would think the way they do about music if it didnt have genres.
If all music was labelled music.
What i find irritating are people who label a band and then decide to dis their every single album throughout their career, most of you guys who dis bands like disturbed have not even heard the new album yet, but just because the name has just popped up in a thread you feel its your duty to trash it!!! Well you know what, im proud that the genres i like are being trashed, because unlike all of you who hate them, i go against the flow with dignity, i am individual. Guys who talk about what they dont understand are just weakminded beings who’ll just take anything that they are told. I have no shame in my music because it defines who i am, (and for the record Disturbed is an amazing band that produce music to define them, not so that they sell. sadly just because such bands have matured and are following their own pathst of defining themselves they get trashed on by some individuals that are far from mature(and i mean mentally)) Ny1 who disses music and says its for kiddies has just defined him/herself to be even more immature than a the ‘15 year olds’. I have bands i like, i have bands i hate, but i dnt waste my time thinking about new ways to criticize those that i hate.

  55. Llewronymous says:

Yo , i just came on here and i no this thread is probably already dead but i have to say to S.A.M.E, i agree with you and totally respect your perception. Not only that, this is about a kid that killed himself partially because among his other problems some people (like those tht dont even any integrity to at least pay respect to this poor kid) are busy dissing him even wen he’s already dead, and some even think its funny.
    I only ave one problem:
“What the fuck Nuggas”. what is that supposed to mean is it misspelled niggas or some word u came up with. If so wht is tht all about, me being one of em and noting wot you said , “(Not trying to be racist)”. ten wot are u trying to be??!
