HEY PEOPLE, REMEMBER TRIVIUM?

TriviumHere’s a band that we haven’t talked about in a really long while, I guess just because they’ve had some down time after a 2-album, 4-year non-stop touring whirlwind. Expect to hear about Trivium a whole lot more in the coming weeks and months; as Axl reported below, they’ve just announced September 30th as a release date for their as-of-yet untitled 3rd album.

Prediction: this is going to be one of those controversial bands that people LOVE to argue about (see also: Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for My Valentine, Disturbed) because of their flirtations with both mainstream success and the metal underground. It’s way too early to say what this album will sound like (and the below preview clip that Axl posted certainly doesn’t help any), but I think it’s safe to say it won’t be a Metallica rehash like 2006′s The Crusade after the backlash that followed.

A lot of people wrote off Trivium early because of their quick rise to success and their association with the metalcore movement. Maybe that’s a fair assessment, and maybe it isn’t. But I have to say, a couple of months ago I put on Ascendancy for the first time in a year or two, and that is a ridiculously solid album through and through.

What do you all think of Trivium?

    SHIT!!!!

Trivium pisses me off. I don’t give a shit about their music because the guys themselves, at least their frontman, whats-his-face, with his cocky attitude and douchbaggy behaviour. Their quick rise to succes was in the most part do to their daddy’s money, and yet they feel that they are entitled to talk shit about other bands and glorify themselves as the saviours of metal.

They are just fucking posers and that’s why I avoid everything that has anything to do with Trivium.

  • banter

They suck major cock. Spoken diplomatically.

I don’t have any idea the backstory of this band or their alleged behavior. As for the music, I’m probably predictable in really liking their last album, Metallica-clone and often silly lyrics or not.

  • TJ

I can understand why people hate on this band.
But I think they write some catchy songs. They aren’t breaking any new ground, but shit like ‘We are the Fire’ and ‘A Bullet to the Head of Trepidation’ are pretty solid songs.

These guys are a lot better that some of the other -core bands who get a bit too much love around here. *coughAvengedSevenfoldcough*

I listened to Trivium from their first album, Ember to Inferno, and while there was the Metallica edge that’s all it was, an edge. Then they realeased The Crusade which is blatant Metallica and not good at all. Basically, I liked trivium pre-The Crusade and still have a glimmer of hope for the new album. Their first two albums absolutely shred, but yeah their attitudes and egos have gotten in the way and no fans should have to deal with that shit. I even got deleted from their myspace after I mentioned that I didn’t really like the new album….I mean wow.

  • Cam

Ascendancy is a sick album, the Crusade had its moments…although at times I thought Hetfield was actually singing for them (see: We are the Fire) which wasn’t really a bad thing…it just didn’t have the same Trivium sound as the previous album.

  • http://www.myspace.com/blackarmyjacket Carlos

The singer has a fucked-up hairline.

  • Kye

I remember trying to introduce my friends to these guys back when Ember came out and no one cared, then suddenly Ascendancy hit and everyone was like O_o

Long story short, these guys are fucking talented, but I think their rise to fame out of nowhere has sparked a rather large hatred in a lot of metal fans….that and their music is exactly original by any means. Good, but nothing mind blowing.

  • Greg

Capharnaum is much better, Trivium doesn’t really do it for me.

  • http://www.myspace.com/evilsammy Sammy

    @Kye:

    1) “rise to fame” is somewhat relative.

    2) That said, your statement, “…has sparked a rather large hatred in a lot of metal fans” says way more about the idiocy of fans (short for “fanatic”) than the band itself.

trivium is a really cool band. they were the band that got me into metal. my brother got into heavy death metal n i didnt like that. it sounds like demons dying(though i like it now) but then i heard trivium and it was kind of like and bridge for me to jump from poppy punk to metal and from that point on i have just gotten into heavier metal like cannibal corpse. soo im pretty fuckin stoked about the new record and cant wait to hear it.

  • CrapMcPoopin

I first liked Trivium when i saw them open for Machine Head, and then Ascendancy wasn’t even out. I bought Ember to Inferno, and thought it was one of the best albums to come from an unknown American band. I saw them play on the Road Rage tour in a shitty cramped bar in Philly above the Troc, and they were awesome. I really liked them even when they started playing bigger places and festivals. I abandon the notion of liking this band when The Crusade was released, because i didn’t want to hear a Metallica Jr.

They’re one of those bands you hate to like… I hated their cover of “Master of Puppets” and hate most of the tracks off The Crusade with the exception of certain parts of certain songs. I can fully understand why people don’t like them, but all in all they’re a young band who got big too quick, but this is the fate for most bands these days. No one today can be Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax, or any of the other bands like them. The days of underground exposure and work ethic to gain notoreity are gone, you can be a star in two days thanks to the internet and record labels looking for the next big thing.

Trivium are just a band looking to be the next Metallica, and i don’t blame them, but they won’t be. I want to hate them, but i can’t, not because they’re good, but because they have potential. They’ve become Napster/Reload era Metallica in mentality without toughing it through the 80s.

All in all, Ascendancy is still a good record. Anything else, i don’t really care about.

  • http://www.myspace.com/divinationmetal thedoomsdaybroadcast

you know, i didn’t like this band before i saw them… i disliked them even more after i saw them… any band that calls a song “anthem” had better have had one before and have been around for at least 20 years. pretencious little fucks.

james hetfield called, he wants his “ye-heah” back… and metallica sucks, too.

  • 36Thoughtless

I think it’s pretty obvious Trivium shouldn’t have gotten as popular as they have in the time they have. Guitar World hails them as if christ has returned, and honestly, it’s ridiculous and insulting.

But what about their music? Well, it’s a mixed bag: Trivium is a band who wear the influences like jumpsuits and who excel in “almosts”. Their lyrics were shamelessly bad on “The Crusade,” and their music felt so much like Metallica that it could’ve been the predecessor to “Death Magnetic.” In my opinion, Trivium is the definition of lazy, a band with so much potential but no drive to be original.

  • http://www.myspace.com/crocpodcast Noch

Back in their debut days I was with them a 100%.In fact I was listening to their material half the time, which is suprising coming from someone who prefers grindcore over thrash.

But with time they started convincing themselves that they had to rip off everything that they listen to.Which totally disgusted me and made me turn my back on whatever the fuck they thought they were doing.

Maybe touring with Slayer is gonna knock some sense into these dopes’s heads.Hopefully.

I’ll give a chance to the new record. If it sucks, and if it sounds too much like this or that band,I believe they will never learn.

    My two cents.

  • http://www.myspace.com/evilsammy Sammy

@36: Guitar World hails every artist as a second coming of Guitar Christ. But they have to in order to sell mags in a shrinking industry. They’ve also never reviewed a piece of equipment they don’t love. Sigh. It’s a necessary evil, I suppose, to at least have one magazine left to discuss guitars and guitar players.

Yes, “The Crusade” is derivative, but at least the superior musicianship is evident and the songwriting not too bad (some lyrics aside).

Trivium may very well be “lazy”. On the other hand, they may be playing (read: marketing) to a whole new generation of rock fans who are just now discovering their dads’ old metal CDs. And exactly how many ****-core albums can a band write without retreading? I’ve brainwashed myself into believing “The Crusade” was more homage than rip-off.

  • d.o.g.o.b.g.y.n.

Hopefully they still remember their original sound because Ascendancy was a fairly decent album.

  • kyle

Ascendancy was good i did not like the last one sounds like alot don’t like them cuz they r popular and not underground who cares i like good metal popular or underground

  • http://www.sithomeandrot.com/celebs/ manny

not to split hairs, but the next album will be their 4th (Ember to Inferno, Ascendancy, Crusade, New Album)

I dunno. Crusade was kinda not that great. Ascendancy had some decent songs on it.

I’m guessing the new album will be more Crusade than Ascendancy though so…yeah.

  • anus

I’m still burnt from their last album

    *weeps*

  • Muttweiler

I like them. Ascendancy was far better than Crusade in my universe but I will be getting the next album. Let’s just say that if I think something is good I could care less if they are as unpopular as Hitler as far as the internet is concerned. If we never bought records from douchebags Axl Rose and Lars Ulrich would be pumping gas or bagging groceries or some shit!

  • jesse blake

Metallica rehash? Maybe in the vocals. But the lyrics and the music are far from anything Metallica ever did.

I like all 3 of their albums equally for their own highlights. Ember was a bad ass album in light of the fact that pretty much no one knew who they were. Ascendency was just fuckin heavy til the end. The Crusade, to me, was an homage to metal for Trivium. They took all the roots that people have but never really show because that would mean making older style metal which isn’t always acceptable in today’s heavier-than-thou metal world. They took elements from every aspect of late 80′s-early 90′s metal and made it their own. Cheesy or no, that album still kicked ass. A lot of people can’t get past Matt’s sorry attempt at a Hetfield impression, but I’ll be damned if there aren’t some bad ass fuckin riffs coming out of that album. You can’t deny it.

The new album will bet yet another redemption for an almost fallen metal band. Trivium will add more screaming to their shit, and people will realize again that they still have the chops to get on stage with some of today’s heaviest bands and have no problem holding their own.

Trivium are in no way posers. All four of them are just big ass metal nerds that have done nothing but listen to metal their entire lives and this is the end product.

  • Muttweiler

    Amen, Jesse.

  • http://www.myspace.com/evilsammy Sammy

I think Jesse’s comment is an homage to mine. :D

  • Joe

Trivium > all the other controversial bands.

If a band copied Slayer’s style, everyone would praise them, but since it’s Metallica, everyone is making fun of them, giving them more mainstream success.

    Fuck Slayer

    /then Joe gets permabanned.

  • TJ

Joe- everyone does praise the Slayer ripoff. I seem to remember Demiricious getting some love around these parts.

Now granted, I like Demiricious better than Trivium. But I’m just playing devil’s advocate.

  • Rob

Seriously, take a song like “light to the flies”. It sounds nothing like metallica. People give heafy shit about impersonating hetfield, yet there are parts where he not only screams his fucking lungs out but sings clean parts as well. When there are bands out like fuckin nickelback or hinder, why would you have a grudge against a band like this?? They continue to never sell out, they make their music complicated as shit with a kick-ass guitar solo every song. It’s people that discriminate them that have fuckin ruined metal with stupid ass pig squeal shit, making the rest of us look retarded as hell. And anyone that has the stupidity to say metallica sucks should burn in hell, there would b no metal if it weren’t for them.
