I also think if bands were playing to pay the rent well they certainly would do a much better job at sounding great. They would have to. So start paying if you want bands to not be such morons and shut up or get a job in an office instead of owning a club.

Most of your observations are spot on and hilarious. But I still beleive it is up to a club owner to actually do the legwork to make their establishment the best it can be and pay for entertainment that they book. I am of course a musician and theoretically if I was to be on the business end of things and ie. open a restaurant I could NEVER expect to ever do a great business if I only depended on my friends to eat there. I am of the belief that you would need two things for this restaurant to take off ............1. Good food and 2. Spending money on letting people know you have good food. And I have a big question to ask all of you. WHY IN THE F&*# SHOULD MUSICIANS PLAY AND RECORD FOR NOTHING This is the only trade where the worker is somehow supposed to fucking bow down and play or work for free. From downloading music on down to all the club owners. This is total nonsense and the reason WHY so many bands suck. If you have to keep your day job and cannot do music full time cause no one wants to pay you cannot ever take it to the next level. I am not talking tons of dough either. I am talking about making music to put a roof over your head and food in your tummy.
I think this is not only lazy on the part of the club owner it is also without any risk which is what any successful business is about. At least the ones with longevity. This expecting bands to fill your club or even bring 20 people has been a problem all over Los Angeles and I have seen it sprawl out to the rest of america (it always does from the smoking ban to pop culture) California almost always leads the pack. Now on the other end I have also seen clubs who actually LISTEN to the bands they are going to book regardless of their draw and in time since this band is truly of high quality because they are rehearsing 5 nights a week. And getting good instead of being out there making friends. Well all of a sudden people start showing up because the club is doing what they are supposed to be doing which is selling fair priced beer and booking high quality entertainment. I have a concept for all of you club owners. If you don't have the money for promotion or good entertainment. THEN DON"T OPEN A CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!!
On the other end of a listener prospective it would be so cool to be able to frequent a club and know the bands were going to kick ass that night since the club cared enough to book decent music all the time. Maybe there just isn't enough talent though on the part of bands. So a word to all the musicians out there. Stop posing and talking on ur godamn little my space and facebook BS and start playing more to get better.

Hilarious. I'm glad to be done with the whole music thing. A man has to know his limitations, and I knew early on that while I possessed some talent, I wasn't cut out to be a "rockstar" (much like 99.9% of the delusional local bands out there).

There's nothing wrong with playing some music for fun at home, but if you aren't amazing, please don't try shoving it in peoples' faces. The same goes for if you're all nasally and annoying. Nobody wants to listen to you banter. The same also goes for bands that actually think about how they are going to banter prior to playing.

I have a job, I'm a functioning member of society, and I enjoy laughing at my old friends who are now in their late twenties wasting all of their free time desperately trying to be the second Nirvana.

Side projects, lol. I love when bands form fifty side projects that all involve the same band members. Nothing like hearing the same band with fifty different names all making feedback while screaming nonsense. Ah memories...

There's a reason for the old joke/riddle about the what the dancer does with her "asshole" before she goes to work; Musician=idiot. I knew of one club (bar) owner that would promise one price to a band only to find out that he went and lined up another one to fill the night then turn around and split the money between the two bands saying; "Oh well I made a mistake and booked this band too so you don't mind splitting the money do you???" The lesson here is that everyone is subject to being in the asshole club. Bar owners included!!! I'm a musician myself and I've had enough experience to say, "Ok, enough is enough, I'm starting my own music channel on Youtube where I can get my music out and don't have to deal with idiots...period!!!" There's always a possibility I'll hook up with some people that are on the same page as I am. And btw the tit bars are fun for a boys night out, but it would cost the $200.00 for one "private" alone so you funnel that to gas, pizza and maybe a few bucks for everybody's pocket. I used to get $175.00 a weekend for doing covers at clubs and up depending on how many nights we were doing plus I would get laid occasionally which wasn't bad.

im sorry man, but your a doucher. only a stuck up prick with no friends would post something like this. who cares if bands do annoying shit. deal with it, cuz if it wasnt for them, you wouldnt have business in the first place. all (most) bands suck at first, but famous artists were local at one point.

and pleeeeease, when you write back, try and find something other than grammer, spelling, or musical in-ability to try and make fun of me for. whatever it is, it will only make you look like more of a fool than you already have made yourslef look like... peece out queer bait

Why would some the club hire a PR person? That is your job and yours alone. Posters, Newspaper ads, etc, ALL COST MONEY, you idiot! The club has in the business world, what's called an "overhead" this includes real money issues:

Trash Removal / Dumpster fees
Water/Sewer Bill
Electric Bill
Rent or Mortgage
Property tax
Entertainment license
ASCAP or BMI fees if applicable
Liquor license and tax
Food license and tax
Liquor / Beer / Beverages, yes... even water
Food
Furniture (Stools, Tables, Chairs etc.)
Dishes, Glasses, Cups, Forks, Knives Spoons, etc
Liability Insurance (you'll love the average price of this one, go look up a policy quote)
Groundskeeping and building maintenenace fees
Restroom supplies and housekeeping fees
Equipment maintenance and upkeep (food, drink, entertainment, etc)
Staff (Bartenders, Waitresses, Security, Management, Cooks, Sound personnel, DJ, etc.)

And to top it all off, things are constantly getting abused and broken around the club because of you talentless foul-mouthed wannabe jack-asses!!! And you want US to pay YOU for coming in and trashing the place? I hardly make a profit in order to stay open and pay the bills on time and the meager staff salaries around here. Once I order supplies, the profit is gone, so I am breaking even,l no actually, LOSING MONEY on a weekly and monthly basis. That's why we now hire cover bands only on Saturday nights and DJ's the rest of the week. Face it YOU SUCK and DO NOT DESERVE ONE RED CENT of my club's revenue. You don't draw a crowd whatsoever, in-fact you drove my regulars OUT because your band was horrible on the ears and joke on stage. And the you have the nerve to bitch to me about pay? GO GET A JOB, YOU SUCK, NO ONE COMES INTO MY CLUB TO HEAR YOU ON ORIGINAL LOCAL MUSIC NIGHTS. That's why I canceled them altogether! They were consistently, the least profitable nights over the past 4 years, in fact, it cost me money to open up and stay in business.

THERE IS THE REALITY YOU JERKOFF!!!!!

"i wish someone would make a list about how shity some places are to play and how bad they dick around bands who have no idea where they are."

Nice spelling, punctuation, and grammar!! Unacceptable, since this site offers a free spell check as you type. Once again, there appears that there is no shortage of moronic teens and early twenty-somethings who just shouldn't have access to a typewriter, let alone the internet . Did you pay attention AT ALL, in school? Perhaps you may have emancipated at 16 and dropped out? Did you really think that you were going to "make it" with that myspace webpage and a few garage-band demos? My Lord, I can't believe you kids think it is just supposed to be that easy. Now go get a GED and a job, and stop wasting our time with this insidiouness!!!!! NOW GO!!!!!! Run along....

contract? I hope you don't expect one of those based on waht I just tortured myself listening to on your free myspace webpage. You know you're so "original"........NOT.

You should see some of my other advice posted below, and heed it i- n order to save yourselves a great amount of disappointment in life. Try getting a job and sticking with it, because, the music thing just isn't in the cards for you bud. (don't feel so bad, it's not in the cards for the rest of the losers here either)!

Have fun pushing all of your possessions around in a shopping cart, you dud. Do yourself a favor please - pawn all of your gear in exchange for a handgun, load it, and shoot yourself in the head.

Please learn the meaning and proper grammar usage of "your" and "you're"

Ex 1: Your grammar sucks.

Ex 2: You're a rather fat loser.

You are funny. You say "local circuit and beyond". Sounds like you are beyond understanding that you are a loser if you are now referring to your local shithole as a "venue". What happened? You graduated from playing in crappy "bands" to "booking" them. (You must have gained weight, lost your hair, and turned 40.) Go get a job, get out of your parent's basement, and start contributing to society you jackwagon.

The venue that made this list went out of business. They used to be a really good venue too. But then assholes who believe in these ideologies, who care more about money rather than an amazing concert or music scene ran it into the ground.

judging by some of the comments regarding this post, it is apparent that some of these people are in fact the same perpetrators described...or they really are just plain ignorant.

Hahahah this was amazing. I have been in my local circuit (and beyond) for the past several years, and have built up a solid reputation. I laughed out loud at most of these, because i see it all the time. Now that i have begun booking and promoting shows at a venue, as well as playing in my own band, i see this shit all the time, and it's ridiculous. a couple things i would like to add to your list are:

- bands who purposely stall past their 10:00pm set time because the bar is empty. Hey, i dropped your name everywhere i could, it's not my fault people think you're shit, and you can't even bring your own girlfriends to the show.

- bands who throw an extremely obscure cover into their set, and think they're the hottest shit on the planet. No one has ever heard of radio city soundtrack.

- Singers who insist on drinking lots of water with "no ice, and lots of lemon", and make sure everyone around them notices it....only to proceed to get on stage and sound like a dying fucking llama

- band managers who talk through their asses, because even THEY know their band is shit. "I've talked to every record label in the states...these guys are on all their radars" BULLSHIT. chances are, you emailed one, and they told you to fuck off.

I could go on, but the list would be endless. I just wanted to say thank you for the laughs!! this was priceless and dead on the money! Props to you for saying it how it is, and giving the good bands a place to do their thing.

cheers

This list is really un-nessecery, but I guess Kenny has got to vent somehow. What? Did he think it was all peaches and cream profesional attitude with 99.9% of the musicians having a real clue in the first place? Apparently he's never seen This Is Spinal Tap or A Mighty Wind. If "Kenny" is that flustered then he needs to find another business to be in.

I can agree with this list and I can honestly say that the "gas money" reimbursment is very generous as I have been playing shows for years and have never seen a dime..
There is such a thing as musicians that just enjoy playing..
pizza is just out of the question... but it sounds nice...
where is this venue??????

Im from Arlington, Tx
my band never has problems with getting people.. of course we don't play every weekend but every show we play has 20 people.. sometimes more.. depending on the night..
It is quite hard to fill even the smallest of venues on a worknight..

lol mr manager.. i'm sorry but 100$ for some no name band is a bit granderous...
