Wow, almost a whole year later and the retardation still astounds me.

So Ben Weinman is a total hardass who's beaten up more people than Disturbed, collectively, and you post this, ironically, on the article where Ben Weinman backs down like a puss and retreats from confrontation.

"wut?"

On the topic of DEP, I honestly don’t know what makes them appealing to me. I listen to their music a lot and it somehow never gets boring, but whenever someone else comes in the room I almost feel ashamed for listening to such noise hehe.------ why would you even say that? david draiman looks like the guy off deal or no deal. now get the fuck outta here you posers

DEP sucks dick. Disturbed rules. im surprized tht such a no name band would talk shit to a successful proven band like Disturbed. so yeah u DEP emo fucks can go play with ur lighters onstage and pretend ur good. but when its comes to performing DEP needs to take notes on Disturbed. and hope they can b half as good as Disturbed is---------- if i recall, ben weinmann is one of the fastest guitarists in the world, im sorry i cant say thesame for the disturbed sing. oh wait no im not.

also im sorry that all you disturbed fans only like what you see on mtv. maybe if you searched around youd find some bands that keep metal and hardcore out of the shitter. like protest the hero or comeback kid or bane or terror or trivium

dillinger escape plan has done more for music (mainly the hardcore genre) than disturbed ever has.

I.E.- i garunteed you if you asked bands that play REAL hardcore theyd have DEP as one of thier biggest influences.

i have never ever ever in my entire lifetime (lifetime is amazing) read or heard of DISTURBED being ANYONES influence. i mean hey, maybe someone heard a disturbed song and was influenced to punch an infant to death? but thats all they influence.

bottom line? Dillinger escape plan pwns and disturbed isnt even considered metal. they made their own genre. its called shitty sellout bands and in that genre is them, fall out boy and my chemical romance.

Heh... I read somewhere that Ben has probably beaten up more people than anyone in Disturbed ever has, and so must be tougher than them.

Multiple sources say that David Draiman beat the living shit out of two kids who picked on him.

And from what I understand about him, David isn't a rabbicinal practitioner. Not even close.

Flapje: Glad to, nice to have someone reply intelligently, there's only about a handful on here who do.

That's an interesting bit of knowledge, a difficult song is seldom a difficult thing to write. I'm glad the line actually mattered to you, too often on here I'd try to seperate the two and just end up getting blasted arrogantly. :)

Well, as you may or may not know that song was actually based on a real occurrence in David's life, when he was fourteen he was involved with a considerably older girl who was a heroin addict and ended up killing herself, he discussed it during their live free online concert. That's somewhat darker than any of their other material, but it does add personality to the music whereas something like Linkin Park is often attempting to be vague and impersonal, I think it contrasts well.

So DEP is sort of a guilty pleasure for you eh? ;) Well we all have those, I'm looking at you Dethklok.

Always willing.

Demon: I thought you were linking them, people here often do, my mistake, I don't listen to metal to feel better about myself or identify with the lyrics, in fact if I identify with the lyrics I won't listen to them, because they're probably vague and empathetic. I meant by way of empowerment the music lets me just go out there day to day and do what I want without ever needing to doubt anything, quite a few of the songs instill that in me, that's what it does for me, I too listen to plenty of music just because it sounds good of course, Black Label Society for instance fit in that category.

Funny, you just outlined the basis for this site existing in that third paragraph. Hehe.

I understand the idea of not wanting a band to be successful, but that understanding is just alien to my own thought process. I've never liked SOAD, I'd probably leave the area when they were playing to go get a drink or something, good to know I probably wouldn't miss anything then eh?

I suppose when a band I already admire gives "props" to Disturbed it does make me feel good, much in the same way Disturbed topping the album charts and laying the smackdown on Usher did, but if it affects whether I like a band or not, no. Granted I was thrilled to hear Disturbed were big Alter Bridge fans and continue to be, but I liked Alter Bridge long before then.

I guess that'll always be the case, and no matter how good a position Disturbed is in, Axe and Vincent will find a way to make them look like shit, and we'll be here to chuckle at the extreme lack of any kind of objectivity.

Rev - empathy and empowerment are completely different things. That was one of the basics of Psych 101 in college. However, my point was, I don't listen to metal to feel better about myself, or think I can change the world, or to be happy that there are bands out there who sing about how I feel. I listen to music because I enjoy the sound it makes. Yes, strange definition, but there are very few bands where I'll actually follow the lyrics word for word to understand the exact meaning they're getting at.

I like music because it sounds good. That's all. I'm not a musician, I couldn't tell a D flat from a C sharp (if those even exist), so I'm not worried about technical proficiency when it comes to liking a band. If they make noise I enjoy hearing, I like that band. Weird way to say it, but it's the best I can do.

I agree with you on the majority of "hardcore metalheads" these days who only follow the newest trend (sorry guys, death metal growls got old a LONG time ago) and only listen to metal because it makes other people think they're tough. It's trendy to not like Band X, so they do everything they can to denounce and talk shit about Band X - even if they can't tell you why they don't like the band. It's trendy to hate on them, dammit!

I don't particularly think Disturbed isn't metal enough to be enjoyable, or that they suck because they're popular (conversely, it seems strange to wish a band to not be successful...if one enjoys their music, one should logically WANT them to be successful to put more music out, instead of disappearing after a demo EP and one full album), or their instrument playing and vocals are weak or not technical enough, or anything like that. I just personally don't like their music, the same was as I simply don't enjoy Chinese food. I'm not going to bitch if they come on the radio, but I don't drop my headphones on an listen to them, either. I don't dislike the band or the members or the music, I simply prefer to listen to other things. (Previous statements were made with about 5 minutes of my lunch to go, hence the reason this statement is toned a bit differently). I saw them at Ozzfest, and they do have plenty of stage presence, get the audience into the whole thing, and their on-stage songs are actually intelligible (as opposed to walking fucktard losers like SOAD, who didn't play one single fucking song I could understand).

As far as Disturbed being successful, sure, they are. However, that doesn't enter into my, "Hm, do I like this noise I hear now?" thought process. I'm not too worried about accolades from other bands, either - I seriously doubt James Hetfield has ever heard of Anneke van Giersbergen, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying The Gathering.

Thing is, Disturbed isn't trendy now - they don't sound like Rosie O'Donnell farting when they "death growl", there's no "zomfg fast!" playing. In a year, all these generic bands that can't do anything but beat drums like trash cans and growl like someone throat-fucked them with a splintered broomstick won't be selling many records, for those few bands that even still exist from that genre. Disturbed, however, will still be selling records and making plenty of money. The problem on here arises because people measure Disturbed against the newest trend...."brie brie urg urg chug chug urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" as it stands now...instead of objectively.

Hehe, thanks a lot dude! A very well thought out post.

What I meant with judging objectively, is that when you go into more important things (rhythm, melody, dynamics) it quickly comes down to taste. Chord schemes don't define a song, but it's something that can hardly be argued about. It's the easiest way to judge the quality (though difficulty is often what people define as quality in the metal community) of a song. I agree though, a chord is useless without a good musician to put it in the right context. And a difficult song is seldom a difficult thing to write.

"Well, I like Disturbed because they’re passionate, and do not confuse passion with anger, many people here do, they’re different things"

Hmm, never really looked at it that way. Thanks for the eye-opener.

I was just thinking about this whole thing and what I've seen of Disturbed, and I'm also under the impression they're doing what they like. That suicide message in their last video was nice and added a lot of personality to the band for me. And I was a bit condescending with my book remark, but lyrics can really make an already good song so much better.

On the topic of DEP, I honestly don't know what makes them appealing to me. I listen to their music a lot and it somehow never gets boring, but whenever someone else comes in the room I almost feel ashamed for listening to such noise hehe. Well first off, I admire the musicianship. Yes, it's a-tonal, but it somehow fits. And there's this groove in their songs that I really like. Plus, the sheer insanity, which is obviously a matter of taste. I guess they started out to stretch boundaries/do something different or something along those lines.

Well, thanks again for the intelligent explanation :)

I was just thinking about this whole thing and what I’ve seen of Disturbed, and I’m also under the impression they’re doing what they like. That suicide message in their last video was nice and added a lot of personality to the band for me. And I was a bit condescending with my book remark, but lyrics can really make an already good song so much better.

On the topic of DEP, I honestly don’t know what makes them appealing to me. I listen to their music a lot and it somehow never gets boring, but whenever someone else comes in the room I almost feel ashamed for listening to such noise hehe. Well first off, I admire the musicianship. Yes, it’s a-tonal, but it somehow fits. And there’s this groove in their songs that I really like. Plus, the sheer insanity, which is obviously a matter of taste. I guess they started out to stretch boundaries/do something different or something along those lines.

Well, thanks again for the intelligent explanation :)

Not at all, that's just your way, and in the larger scheme, the metalcore community's way of judging music "objectively", music itself isn't defined by chords, and many people have different definitions of what even qualifies as music, for instance Bjork doesn't fit into my own definition. I feel judging a band by what chord they use, whether they have double bass, whether they must have cookie monster or pig squealing vocals, or whether a chord gets used "too often", that's just elitist bullshit to me, really.

I expect those here to judge Disturbed in that light, but they should expect me to come out swinging and point out the flaws in their own tastes. I'd like to think it shuts them up for a moment and stops them from being so willing to point fingers without at least thinking beforehand. ;)

Well, I like Disturbed because they're passionate, and do not confuse passion with anger, many people here do, they're different things, and also because, while they can be "catchy", they steer away from that most of the time, the catchiest thing are often their riffs. For comparison, if you look at Godsmack or Linkin Park, their contemporaries, many of the songs are completely built around being catchy, lyrically, vocally, and musically.

I get why people here don't like them, because they don't have seizures while playing guitars, because they sing instead of screech and growl, and even squeal, and because they don't build obsessively complex songs that just end up sounding muddled. I also think that because they do try to have some lyrical meaning, which the metalcore nuts absolutely despises on every level imaginable, they get it to the face for that too.

I also like them, as I mentioned before, because the lyrics are empowering, someone would sit down and listen to this without thinking and just assume it's all Linkin Park angst, but when I can quote lyrics to 65 year old classical music enthusiast and have him actually think they're meaningful, then who the hell is wrong there?

As for DEP, they're a bunch of assholes, and what's worse is when confronted Ben backs down and turns into a Teletubby, so his whole "hardcore" image just went down the drain, and musically they have improved, but I have to ask myself.

Why the fuck DO they write music? So 12,000 people can appreciate it, feel like they're part of some unique movement, and they can keep shuffling through members because Ben is the biggest dick this side of Dave Mustaine? I don't get their purpose in existing aside from patting themselves on the back for writing stuff that purposely sounds opposite to what they define is "popular" in metal/punk.

I'd also like to say, about Disturbed, I think they're one of the only newer bands that is managing to straddle the line, so many bands around them are devolving into hard rock and hardcore in relation to metal, Disturbed aren't, I'd say they have more in common with the heavy and thrash metal forefathers than any of their still surviving contemporaries.

I have to say, about their defiance, is they could be more popular, considerably more, if they went down the Linkin Park route, if they went to MTV events looking like fucking Bono. Also if they sung about their girlfriends and cutting themselves, and had extremely emotional and empathetic lyrics, a soft crooning, rapping to have more "mass appeal", more obsessive machismo to hit that Godsmack audience, but they don't, and that's a choice they and DEP share, to do what they want to do.

I think I fleshed that out enough. ;)

Revrant, the only way to judge music objectively is indeed to 'look at what chord gets used x amount of times'. How else would you want people to judge Disturbed's music? I don't really understand why that argument bothers you so much. So Disturbed isn't the most technical band around, why should you care? I assume that's your taste. Anyone that thinks less of you because you like simpler music is an idiot anyway.

If I'm wrong about you liking Disturbed because it's straightforward/catchy, then I'm really curious as to what IS good about them. I listened to Believe when it came out, and I heard a couple of the newer singles and it's just too generic for my taste. There's gotta be more to it than the lyrics... if I want to have a good read, I'll go get a book.

And for the record, if DEP was really jealous of Disturbed's success they wouldn't be DEP. Granted, they might not be good at writing catchy songs (will anyone ever know?), but if you write the music they do, you don't do it for the money.

"There’s more to music than what tuning you’re using or what specific cord gets used x amount of times, and I get sick of hearing that. So they have to have a fucking seizure while playing the guitar and have three dozen guitar technicians or whatever the hell?"

No, but stepping away from the I, IV, V shuffle helps.

Demon: I've heard the "nothing different" thing before and guess what? There's more to music than what tuning you're using or what specific cord gets used x amount of times, and I get sick of hearing that. So they have to have a fucking seizure while playing the guitar and have three dozen guitar technicians or whatever the hell? As for empowerment, what the do you think half of Sabbath was? Fucking Teletubbies? Empowering, you're confusing empowerment with empathy, they are not the same thing, and I'm a bit annoyed that you can't tell them apart.

Half the metal my ass, half of METALCORE, not metal, and then well over half if not all of it, metalcore is comparable to fucking N*SYNC in lyrical predictability.

Yes yes, we all listen to plenty of different things, I do too, we're discussing metal though, and I didn't accuse you of being part of some niche, I was taking a stab at the community which froths from this place.

Here's the sad part, you're the only one here who actually feels that way, and I credit you for it, everyone else dislikes Disturbed for the most ascinine, stupid fucking shit reasons I can comprehend. Virtually NONE of them are willing to say "it just doesn't appeal to me" or "I don't like that". In fact I continually argue with a metal elitist friend of mine who sits there and nitpicks over the most contradictory shit as to why Disturbed sucks, the vocals, yet he listens to fucking Avenged Sevenfold as well as Coheed and Cambria. Well the lyrics suck, he listens to tons of music with shittier lyrics and mass appeal, well they don't play very well, again, listens to plenty of shit where they don't play very well.

Basically that's what I've continually been confronted with here, no one can say "I do not -personally- favor them because it's my taste." it's always some stupid shit about how they aren't metal enough, or how this cord gets used too often, or how they're mainstream, or some meathead sheep nonsense, no one can just have their own opinion, they have to go "baa baa baa" and echo everyone else. I get sick of this heads to pop culture's tails in regard to sheep thinking.

So indeed, I credit you if you're telling the truth.

Disturbed are very popular in the metal community, so I don't see what you're getting at, plenty of historic acts have given them praise and they're the second most successful metal act to come along in the past ten years, and arguably the only one that has roots in Heavy Metal. I don't equate "success" to "shit" as people here do, so I don't see that as a bad thing. As an addon to your classical analogy, I actually got a sixty five year old lawyer who listens to solely classical music to give a listen to The Night and Prayer, and he found it fascinating, so that's out the door. I doubt he'd find any charm in something machismo like Motorhead though, true. :)

d: Man, people sure do come up with clever shit on here, don't they "OMG DAT LIEK BARNEY!!11!1 ha cuz, disturd iz liek teh barney of mtuhhhl!1!!one!" clever as hell.

Retro: negate: 2. to nullify or cause to be ineffective

"Disturbed, seriously? Disturbed?" I think I heard two bickering teenage girls say that with Backstreet Boys instead of Disturbed back in middle school.

Doctah: Well they do, they sell as many thousands of albums as I have fingers per thousand, they headline small places, they play slightly larger ones. They're a band that gets a lot of attention from the press, but not necessarily the community.

Porkspam: Or have The Almighty Ozz himself take notice of them, praise them, and want them on his tour, you mean? :)

Cow: I'm callin' you cow because your post reminds me of what comes out of them, and it isn't milk, if you can pull your head out of the orifice in question I'll give you some examples. I somehow doubt you're capable, so just keep grazin' instead, good cow, moo moo. =)
