Great column, Michael! I am pleasantly surprised by how good the new Whitesnake CD is and am impressed with both Def Lep’s and Dokken’s new offerings, too! I wouldn’t say that “Sparkle” is a return to “H&D”- rather, it’s more like a return to “Hysteria.” The guitar work of the first tune “Go” is very reminiscent of “Women.” Although I’ll always have an interest in what the Lep boyz are up to, I don’t think anything will come close to the first three- at least for me. Really hoping that the new Extreme will be as good- if not better- than “Star.” Let’s hope!

Wow, another Harem Scarem fan! Don’t forget about Overland’s “Break Away” (Steve Overland from FM ), easily my favorite album of ‘08. Let’s hope the Extreme album is as good as “Star” promises it to be.

What’s wrong with Stryper’s Reborn is that it doesn’t sound like Stryper, it doesn’t have guitar solos, it doesn’t have any interesting/energetic drumming, it doesn’t have any guitar harmony of any kind, nearly every song sounds similar (either a ballad or a slow, plodding number), and it’s not very metal/hair metal.

The first and last tracks are good, one of which was written 20 years ago.

I was pretty shocked by how good the new Whitesnake album is. However I felt the new Crue album was a pale shadow of their classic material, and I’m not much of a fan of anything after Girls, Girls, Girls.

What was wrong with Stryper’s Reborn? I listened to that one for a while. And will still throw it on in the future I’m sure. Just curious why it’s being ragged on.
Thrash/death is my main meal these days. But..the new Whitesnake is a definite return to form. Great cd and Aldrich kicks mucho ass!! My only bitch about it is no Tommy Aldridge. His double bass playing is a huge part of the ‘Snake sound. And it’s severely missed.

This is a great column, entertaining and well written.

Stryper – indeed undervalued, though Reborn was pretty bad (as it was a Michael Sweet solo album originally). They were oftentimes more ‘metal’ than many of the bands they were grouped with. But then again, they were always a little ‘fey’ as well. Syrup.

I wish the decent new album by ASIA would fit in with this article, but it doesn’t.

Yo…Extreme’s waiting for the punchline may be their best record…raw, and ahead of it’s time. nuno’s de-tuned guitars were way before everyone in the late 90s were using them. also, you can listen today and there is nothing dated about it…..if you don’t like the raw funk riff of ‘cynical’ then you got no balls!
