Heard some of the songs on the new album… sounds like since he can’t think of any good songs he’ll just do a bunch of shitty songs that cater to moronic women in their 20s-30s who date guys that treat them like shit, but they don’t care because they’re screwing 9 other guys anyway all while neglecting their children so they can go out and party and be “cool”. And then they can go, “omg that song’s just like me and my life and stuff, i totallys connect with this it’s like he wrote it for me i love his voice and i can dance to that beat while i’m at the club looking for a new disease-ridden partner”. All Cornell has to do is show up at the studio, sing the lines on the paper Timbaland (what a super creative name that is by the way, just as super creative as the mindless droning of the “awesome beats” in his “songs” which he probably assembled in a computer program full of preset annoying noises since he hasn’t talent to play a real instrument) gives him and rake in the dough.

That’s what happens when you stop drinking, smoking & doing drugs, and get a wife who seems to pretty much have his ass whipped. About the drugs, though – I’m betting he’s either getting something on the sly, or his doctors are treating his depression/bipolar with some really great “happy meds.” NOBODY just quits booze, alcohol, and drugs (esp. after so many years of heavy use) all at once and goes on like everything is peachy-keen. There’s something else going on (would love to know what it is).

This is horrible, but understandable. His last solo album which came out last year was horrible too. His firs solo album way the hell back in 1999 was actually decent. These last 2 are just wrong.

How can this come from the man that gave us songs like Beyond The Wheel, Hands All Over, Outshined, Jesus Christ Pose, Black Hole Sun, Pretty Noose????

No argument here that Cornell can still sing (at least in a studio), but my issue with the song is that it’s a WAY overproduced, terrbible pop song. (In most cases, I’d say “terrible pop song” is a redundant phrase, but about one in 45,000 pop songs isn’t terrible, but merely awful. And then we get into the whole issue of defining what “pop” music is. “Pop” being the condensed version of “poplular” nothwithstanding, some metal is pop, while most jazz is not.)

Going in a new direction is nothing new and there is nothing inherently wrong with it. People like new challenges, and often musicians want to explore new creative and expressive avenues. Just like the comic actor who tries his hand at drama or vice versa, musicians sometimes feel tethered to their past. But in this particular case (as in, this one song), I find it to be a terrible representation of Cornell’s usual brilliance and (in my opinion) considerable legacy in rock music’s history.

I still think it’s too early, and much of this negativity will subside when we can hear the whole album, and hear more of these tracks live. Sure, this single seems heavily influenced by Timbaland, and for fans of Chris Cornell, it’s a huge leap in a new direction. For a single, it’s an obvious choice to advertise this collaboration, because it’s obviously Chris and Timbaland. Radio singles aren’t always representative of the album, nor are they usually the best tracks. I imagine there’s plenty to like on this album, even if your tastes lean heavily towards soundgarden. With only one new song (can’t speak for the ‘clips’ running around, they’re too short…), I can’t be convinced that this album will disappoint me.

@noyokono: okay, I try not to remember of the ’80s; yeah, I remember something about a “Page/Plant tour” (then a “Page/Coverdale tour??”) that got about zero attention, too…BUT, as of late, Robert Plant (and Jimmy Page) has redeemed himself (gotta say it – redemption song – sorry, that sucks) by acting his age, which isn’t to say that he still can’t or shouldn’t belt out old Zepp tunes; he just isn’t acting like a caricature of himself – like Jagger et al.

@rontfl: I was referring to Plant’s full on embrace of pop music in the 80s. Think of the Timbaland produced album as Cornell’s Shaken N Stirred.

Don’t get me wrong – I’ve been looking out for Thayil ever since the demise of SG (one of favorite guitarists ever), but he was mainly responsible for SG’s drop-down tuning, which sounded cool, but wasn’t genius…but I AM headed over to the “Thayil” thread; I already knew all about Probot and his NWTO work w/Biafra (sucked – but that’s because of Biafra), but I’d like to see what else is going on…

ummm…pick-axe Bobby – where do you get your info (or do you ever read liner notes??); almost, if not ALL the writing for SG was basically done by Cornell (a VERY few credited to the Cornell/Thayil duo) prior to their last studio LP, Down On The Upside – Cornell was/is a genius…and as far as noyokono’s comment about Robert Plant, I’m kind of confused: Plant is one of the few from the late ’60s /’70s who has actually done a really decent job (have you heard any of his late LPs, or seen any of his acoustic sets…he still has pipes) and hasn’t thoroughly embarassed himself ala Mick Jagger-style.

It is my firm belief that Chris Cornell is following the career trajectory of Robert Plant, one of his most obvious influences. We’re maybe a decade or so away from a bluegrass effort.
