POLL: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE SOUNDGARDEN ALBUM?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 at 4:48pm by

Since we all seem to be in agreement that the new Chris Cornell / Timbaland joint is a steaming pile of dog turds, let’s harken back to better times, shall we? Are you a fan of the early, raw Soundgarden featuring Mr. Cornell running around in combat boots with his shirt off, or the proggier, trippier Soundgarden of the mid ’90s? You tell us.

Definitely Superunknown, but out of everything Cornell has ever done, Euphoria Morning is his finest work.

We seem to have forgotten the Screaming Life/Fopp album as well. But that’s my 2nd fav. Badmtorfinger was crucial to my musical formation.

  • bucketochicken

I got Badmotorfinger not too long after I got pubes. You do the math.

  • ronftl

well, at least I got this one “right” – (Superunknown)…although it’s sandwiched between two other awesome (yeah, they all are) albums, Badmotorfinger/Somms & Down On The Upside, two that are actually very different from each other, but I gotta say I love them all – & they still get heavy rotation at my house, in my car, etc….

  • Cisco

Temple of the Dog will always be one of my faves…. I mean c’mon, Say Hello 2 Heaven, Reach Down, and let’s not forget Hunger Strike!

  • ronftl

yeah, but TOTD wasn’t Soundgarden (just Chris & Matt), so can’t count that…

  • http://www.roxwel.com Pick-Axe Bobby

Temple of the Dog is so fucking bad. Ugh what a piece of shit. Not that I didnt buy it and jam it when I was younger. But Jesus, what a pile of pretentious garbage.

Superunknown, no contest. Not because it’s better, as such, but because it’s the one I know forwards, backwards and inside out, and of which I wore three second-generation tape copies to stretch-and-snap on the bus rides to school and back.

  • http://www.benapatoff.blogspot.com Dave

There aren’t many albums better than Superunknown–though Badmotorfinger comes damn close.

  • Danny

I still go into an involuntary slow head bang every time I listen to the Badmotorfinger cd. Thank you grunge for killing Def Leppard, Poison, Warrant, etc. etc. etc.

  • http://verbeatblogs.org/bereteando tiagón

Badmotorfinger and Down on the Upsider are great, great albums. But Superunknown stands the test of time.

About Chris’ other stuff, also love Temple of the Dog – fantastic, visceral album. And Euphoria Morning is not that bad either.

The responses are going to be dependent upon the ages of those who reply. Screaming Life/Fop, Ultramega OK and even Badmotorfinger galvanized a new generation of musicians. The rest were good but too influenced by mainstream pop. To claim they are superior is to claim mainstream pop is better than pure, raw rock. It is not. Early Soundgarden is all that matters. Those who answered Superunknown are totally and completely incorrect.

  • http://www.conorschaefer.com/blog/ Conor

You guys really have to learn the art of the write-in.

I don’t like Soundgarden! Give me a choice that says I don’t know the band, otherwise I’m tempted to just pick something and fuck with your statistics.

  • jonowev

    THEY FUCKING SUCK

  • Blackthorned

Superunknown – a true classic album. I’m in awe of it and aside from the music, I think that it is Cornell’s lyrical highpoint.

Down On The Upside is very underrated though imo. Apprently that’s Cornell’s favourite Soundgarden album. And hey – if we’re lucky maybe he’ll re-release it with some of big T’s genius drum machine beats on it! Burden in my hand in da club.

  • Blackthorned

    @ Conor

Or how about not particpating in surveys about bands you don’t like?

I know, it’s a crazy idea but crazy ideas sometimes work out.

  • http://countshockula.blogspot.com ezra

I can’t believe superunknown is beating the finger! Must be an age thing. Am I too old for this site? 32, by the way.

  • bucketochicken

    @ ezra: Cosign.

  • http://studio-erebus.com meatpopsicle

… ezra, im 38 and Superunknown won out for me.

Now had it said single favorite Soundgarden track .. Outshined might have taken it for me.

  • slimfiend

Soundgarden was a neutered dog by the time Superunknown was released. My vote was for Louder Than Love but Badmotorfinger was their peak!

  • LionofKnowledge

Who cares!? They suck!! Whats the point of this poll? How about some metal polls?

  • DJ

I learned to tune a guitar listening to 3 bands: Barkmarket, Sonic Youth and Soundgarden.

This is a sad day, indeed.

  • dthrasher

    Soundgarden is fucking terrible.

Umm, how can an opinion be incorrect? The poll clearly asks, “What’s YOUR FAVORITE Soundgarden album?” you bag of douche.

  • Jesus Christ

  • another turd

What happened to the good ol days when raw music was the shit? After Badmotorfinger, soundgarden turned into bitches! I also used to spend hours in the car puffing and road farming to that shit! Bring on the raw shit, it’s still out there if you look around, but guaranteed it’s not coming from chris cornells gaping shithole-Thats the one right under his faggot ass nose. What a homo sellout. Maybe he should join Metallica…

  • Julie Lindberg

    WOW!

Soundgarden was great, but what kind of fans are you??? He hasn’t stopped performing his past music. You may not like his last album but alot of other people do. It’s a good thing CC is not your kind of rigid thinker because he probably wouldn’t still be be in the business. What’s wrong with an artist experimenting within his world of creativity. it doesn’t take anything away from past achievements nor dictate the future ones. GEE, did he step out of your little world for a minute. I’m glad he’s not threatened by such close minded, nasty spirited “fans”, and is willing to try working in other genres. Again, it’s the difference between the artistic personality and the those who are only able to criticize.
What the hell is the big deal anyway!! Besides don’t you need to get back to your job at the music store, or your cubicle at the insurance company.

    • another turd

Amazing how contradictory your stump sermon was. Maybe before you ramble your hyperbole you should understand the music industry and business in general. Those projects were brainstorms of management based on revenue. Jesus Christ, grow up. It’s not the rose colored world you envision. I am a musician/Mastered Luthier and I also have a machinist job while I am going to school. I have enough experience to safely say that your ideology of the music world draws in thousands of dreamers anually. Unfortunately they learn that the cut throat exec’s hammer them out of every coin possible. Face it. He does it for the money. Is a chainsaw music? No, because it contains no synchopated rhythems or even instrumentation unless stolen from someone. Amazing to me is that they can “sample” someone elses music as long as they change a certain amount of it without it infringing of intellectual properties. If I steal your car and change the wheels and stereo is it now okay to call it mine and legally use it as I wish? Admit it, you’re obviously inexperienced with the reality of the business. I am a certified school educated professional and I have my own successes. Musically, financially, psychologically, etc. I would rather have my ass kicking “garage band” than a souless puppet band worth millions. The industry is all about money, but true success is about maintaining your integrity as a person. Chris Corndog sold out. Ask his former bandmates. I know you wanted to come across as being intelligent and open minded, but with the double talk it comes across that you put the symbolism ahead of the substance. I enjoy anything that has real instruments/musicians and a heavy groove. Whether it is classical or death metal, glam rock or bluegrass. The fact is, as popularity peters out, promoters push your name anyway they can. Music has nothing to with image. The sell out just bruised his career. It’s that simple. If he jams with a good band again perhaps he could redeem himself… but I’m not holding my breath.

  • ronftl

Julie – you’re missing the WHOLE point when you post something like that HERE.

Most of us aren’t hip-hop, rap, pop fans – we’re ROCK fans, so your post is basically irrelevant.
    Sorry.

  • Julie Lindberg

Chris Cornell is rock, but “imagine” isn”t.

  • ronftl

Julie – again, this started out as a poll of fave SG albums, and Cornell apart from Soundgarden does not SOUND like SG….and that’s such a matter of personal taste, whether or not you like his post-SG stuff.
Agreeably, his live performances (minus Scream) are fantastic – loads of SG.
Bottomline: Are you a fan of a man, or music? It’s all about the music to me.

  • ronftl

yeah, what another turd said, exactly ; )

  • another turd

Haha… whatever. At least I know what musical integrity is. Ever since Cornell left soundgarden he’s been a suck ass corporate bitch. I’m a fan of the real deal. All I’m saying is that he even sucked as audio slaves lead guy. Talk about crap! I’m not a fan of HIS. I am a fan of music if it has some form of art/soul to it, which Chris Cornhole has been missing for at least a half of a decade.

  • ronftl

    lol…ChrisCornholio…he he…he he…
