POLL: ATTN DUDES – DO YOUR GIRLFRIENDS LIKE METAL?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 at 2:45pm by

Since the readers of this site (and metalheads in general) are predominantly dudes, the illustrious MetalGF suggested an interesting poll on the matter. How do your significant others feel about your love for metal? I am genuinely curious. Girls and gays should feel free to chime in on the matter as well, as we’d love to hear your side of the story.

i’ll be truly sad if i’m the only girl on metalsucks…

  • prism

There should be a “Only if it’s Opeth” choice. I think that covers a LOT of relationships.

  • p4r4s1t3

don worry Princess, Angela Gossow is one of the only femalé metal singers and she rules, so basically you rule

  • http://theycontrol.us eisnein

clearly metalgf is broadening her horizons but does she hate metal?

i selected metal but only cause i do cause that was the closest to the truth. the wife has a “favorite” pantera, slayer, SOAD (that count anymore?) song but only cause i think its the most tolerable of each to her.

  • ThrillHo

@Princess: I’m right here with ya, Sister.

  • Joe

I would like to hear some info from the people who actually said their significant other loves metal. Sounds like a match.com commercial waiting to happen.

  • TJ

Oh boy. The lady hates metal. Always calls it the ‘screamy music that makes you want to punch babies.’

Getting married in a few months has meant constant battles over a playlist for the DJ. I’m not expecting to get to hear Pig Destroyer or Amon Amarth at the wedding. But can’t a metalhead hear a little metal??

  • Cisco

My wife hates metal, *sigh*, but hey I have two daughters and they go crazy (in a good way) when I put some on in the house or car stereo. It’s quite the most awesome sight when you see a 3 and 2 year old rocking out in the car asking daddy to turn it up louder! It drives my wife crazy and she’s told me more than once to “not put that crap on around the girls”, I guess I still have a rebellious streak in me.

  • http://hookssobig.blogspot.com Wayne

It depends. My girlfriend likes Tool, The Sword, Clutch, Baroness, Kyuss, Opeth (in clean vocals mode only) and Torche when I put those bands on. Not so much on anything heavier than that. She mostly falls on the “hates it” side, though.

  • the_0ne

    Dude, you forgot one.

    - Loves metal, but maybe not as heavy as me.

I don’t really qualify for any of those options…

My wife loves metal, but more the likes of Metallica, Disturbed, etc… More cream-puff metal. She’s not into my Slipknot, KSE, All That Remains, AILD, Mudvayne, blah, blah.

Amen @Cisco, I actually got my 18-month old little dude banging his head the minute I put in any kind of metal. (But then he does to the Barney song also.) lol

  • Sammy

@Ciscso: What’s really cool is taking your son and his buddies (at they’re urging) on a road trip to see Iron Maiden and having them exclaim afterwards that it’s not only the best concert they’ve ever attended, but the best day of their lives to that point.

  • Sammy

What if your wife hates metal but your girlfriend likes some?

  • Cisco

@Sammy: Still have a few years to go, but I’m patiently (and eagerly) waiting.

  • Kye

I’m single now, but my ex LOVED metal. In Flames and Dimmu were her favs

  • SickSixSeth

How about a choice…doesn’t like metal nor anything else you’re really into and you its starting to annoy the fuck out of you

  • SickSixSeth

oops…retyping that….doesn’t like metal nor anything else you’re really into and its starting to annoy the fuck out of you

  • Sara

I’m glad i’m not the only girl here..

  • canea

My wife tolerates it. But nothing beyond that. She doesn’t even comment on it anymore.

My 4 year old will listen to it though especially if it’s folk metal. Kids will listen to anything though.

  • canea

@TJ: Maybe some AC/DC? Like “You Shook me all night long”? DJs always play that at wedding parties.

  • http://www.coreymitchell.com Corey Mitchell

I’m with canea. You should add a “Tolerates my obsession with metal” category.

  • Cisco

@Canea: I beg to differ, my oldest will not listen to Dave Matthews (my wife listens to DM not me). She always gets up to leave or says, ‘mommy, no more!’, pointing to the speakers.

  • bob fossil

My wife loves metal-we had loads of metal and hardcore played at our wedding! I am a lucky bastard!

  • The Metal Nerd

I called my girlfriend. told her to read this post and its comments. maybe itll open her mind to maybe being a bit more accepting. Shes well aware that no matter how much she protests or bitches and complains, our children (including my stepson whos real dad is some stupid white rich boy who thinks listening to rap makes him cool..idiot.) will be raised on metal, hardcore, death metal, etc. See, Heres my problem, she listens to “artists” like Jessica Simpson and Avril Lagvine. When I make any atempt to get her listening to anything of value she writes it off as nothing more than a headache. I emplore you fellow headbangers, is there no hope? A light at the end of my provebial tunnel?

  • vitruvianApe

this poll kinda gets me thinkin about a new poll, how many of us metalsucks maniacs are young blood-wear whatever we want-don’t give a fuck metalheads, how many are All grown up-forced to get a job-but still love metal, how many have never left their parents basement, ect…..

  • Andypants!!!

I voted that my girlfriend LOVES metal. But I dont have a girlfriend. I have a very-soon-to-be Husband.

And I can tell you that I, as a female, LOVE metal as well.

I also think that musical similarities in a relationship definitely contribute to better days and better sex.

  • The Metal Nerd

    25. Divorced. Getting Remarried to the same girl. I have A real job. Love DM, HxC, etc. and dont live in a basement or at home. Im trying to open my own rare music/neiborhood comic book shop. Now then, to the Dave Matthews fan, what in the hell are you doing on a metal forum if your into bands like DMB? Other than your metalhead wife more than likely forceing you to post?

  • ChuckNorrisIsGod

I had one girl who told me if i didn’t quit listening to metal she would break up with me. So you know what i told her……. Oh shit here she comes gotta go.

  • Emily

@ TJ: You could probably sneak in some Ayreon (Day 11: Love in particular) or Kamelot or something.

  • Walker

My chic doesnt mind Deftones, Tool, and Metallica. I have started to love the uneasy look on her face when I play some BTBAM or Black Dahlia Murder, and the absolutle disgusted look on her face on anything heavier than that. It cracks me up, then my hand goes for the volume and turns it down. Which is something I can garentee we have all done. Anyone been caught just headbanging in the living room, and then your chic walks in and you immediately stop what your doing, LIKE YOU”VE BEEN CAUGHT.

I would love to know who has sex to blastbeats. I mean who’s that guy that pops in some Suffocation and is all about it.

  • http://DarkTwinCities.com Christopher Roddy

My wife was into Eighties Metal and still is to a certain extent (particularly “Hair” Metal). By the time the Nineties rolled around she got more into Goth and Electronic/Industrial. She’s not into much new Metal, though every now and again she’ll become interested in something I’m listening to. She’s not at all into anything that screams, barks or roars – though there are exceptions to that rule. She recently developed a rather intense interest in Hatebreed. She digs the positivity.

So yeah, your poll choices were lacking somewhat.

  • http://www.conorschaefer.com/blog/ Conor

@prism: That comment was fucking gold, dude.

  • dalenkwint

Most girls i know don’t like Opeth because they say its too slow or not heavy enough.

  • jono

    so berry ronery

  • Muttweiler

Wife likes hair metal, country and barely listens to the radio. Stepdaughter 17 listens to anything dorky (Drum Major in marching band) Stepdaughter 16 listens to emo, anything by fuckfaces who died before she was born and anything that is lyrically vacant, rhythmically challenged, and screamed like whatever went for these pussy singer’s balls is being cauterized with a rusty knife covered in burning kerosene. The wife kind of tolerates (barely) my melo death, thrash and metalcore. Bitches if I play anything with balls in the car and shuts my radio off or turns it down if I’m working in the garage. Grow up, pay bills, buy house, play shit loud because you own the fucking house. Does the stupid neighbor stop and tell me her life story…FUCK NO… death metal scares stupid people.

  • bradican

My last girlfriend hate metal… but i turned her on to some more commercial stuf like avenged sevenfold and SOAD and she even liked a few TDEP songs

  • http://www.idiotfreeamerica.net centralscrutinizer

My wife listened to country, show tunes, and contemporary Christian music for the first 30-some-odd years of her life. She still likes some of that stuff but thanks to me she now likes Ayreon, Queensryche, Dream Theater, Savatage etc., and some hair-metal. She’s alright with a little Megadeth but can’t stand Dave Mustaine’s voice…meh, you can’t have it all; I consider it a job well done given the circumstances.

  • http://www.myspace.com/scream_bloody_gore Catharsis

@Walked: Boning to blast beats (I recommend anything off of Morbid Angel’s first four) is awesome, but sludge is better. It really get ya in the groove, nahmean?

    Also, I’m a 20-year-old metal chick.
Unlike many other “metal” girls, my favorite bands are NOT All That Remains, Slipknot, or Pantera; they’re Eyehategod, Drudkh, and Satanic Warmaster. It boggles my mind how few girls are into metal, let alone legit extreme metal. Any opinions on why that is, dudes?

  • http://plabebob.blogspot.com Plabebob

I’m a 24 yr old female metal fan, I’ve only ever had one BF who wasn’t in to metal & that was when I was 15 before I’d really got in to it myself. Since then it’s been metalheads all the way! I can’t really see myself going out with someone who wasn’t in to it seeing as it’s pretty much my life, we’d have nothing to talk about & nothing to fuck to :D

  • The Metal Nerd

number one reason girls hate metal. Power Violence. I love it. Girlfriend doesnt even know it exsists. for good reason.

  • Catharsis

    @ The Metal Nerd:

A lot of people don’t know it exists, haha. It’s personally one of my favorite genres (I almost lost my mind when I saw that Hellbastard is touring next year) but I think it depends on where you’re located. I hardly ever see chicks at pxvx shows – like, never. It’s a shame; they’re really missing out.

  • Shreyashi

I love metal, can’t seem to have a day without listening to it… although my boyfriend is more into the softer side of things. However, its fine by me… since one’s individuality needn’t be imposed on others.

For all of us who like metal, its more than enough, i guess, that we like it. that’s all we need to know. :)

  • Merta

I agree with plabebob on having nothing to talk and fuck to with a guy that doesn’t like metal. I would love to find a guy that loves metal like me, but it is sooo hard to find because no one walks up to you at concerts to start a conversation. I am 21 and never had a boyfriend because I can’t find one that loves metal like me.

  • http://www.metalsucks.net DeaThrash

    @ ChuckNorrisIsGod

I had a gf one time that told me I couldn’t listen to Metal anymore in particular Chimaira… for some reason THAT was the band she hated above Cannibal Corpse or even Deicide or something like that. Anyway she is gone and when I dumped her she is the one that threatened to shoot me with a shotgun… something strange there I think.

Anyway, for the person that wanted to know more about the people that clicked “My gf loves metal…” I don’t know if she necessarily loves it but she does enjoy some bands. She digs Slayer, Sepultura, old Metallica, Prong, White Zombie, Ozzy, Pantera, Priest, and stuff like that. But she doesn’t care for some bands where the lyrics are “incoherent” as she calls it, but will listen to it in moderation.

  • Gossamer Axe

I’m one of the “I’m a girl and I read metalsucks”

I have never dated a guy that listens to metal…It’s always mellow shit. They always HATE when I listen to Emperor ;)

  • http://enterthegoatlady.com/ goatlady

I’m a chick and goddamn, I’m WAY more metal than anyone I’ve ever dated, with the exception of the current Mr Goatlady.

We just got back from Wacken and it seems there more metal chicks in Europe than I’m used to seeing in Oz.

  • http://live.com 5

My girlfriend likes disturbed and korn
so, no, she doesn’t like metal
