RECKLESS SPECULATION OF THE DAY: WHAT IF PERRY FARRELL IS THE NEW SINGER FOR VELVET REVOLVER?

Monday, August 4th, 2008 at 12:46pm by Axl Rosenberg

I just wanna be clear, right off the bat, that this is just me playing “What If?” I’m not breaking a story, I don’t have a source, it’s Monday, it’s a slow news day, and I just got to thinking. I don’t want this to be like the time that I said it might be cool if Whitfield Crane joined Anthrax and then some putz put it on Wikipedia and asked Crane about it in an interview, and asked as though it were a bona fide fact or even a real “rumor.” THIS IS JUST ME HAVING FUN.

Here’s the reasoning behind my total b.s. speculation:

  • Slash joined Farrell on-stage at Lollapalooza this past weekend to play a cover of “Jane Says.”
  • Duff McKagan has now said that Velvet Revolver have “been working with who’s a really good singer and a great guy. I really hope he’s the one.” Now, one would have every right to assume that McKagan is referring to rumored Weiland replacement Royston Langdon
  • …except that Matt Sorum recently said that “We got a call from a pretty big guy who wants to be our singer… we’ll see what happens in the next couple of months.” Now, “a pretty big guy” could obviously be any number of people, but I have a hard time believing it’s Langdon. I just don’t know anyone who would consider him “big.”

So, what do you guys think about the possibility of Farrell being the new singer for VR? He’d be a pretty huge change from Scott Weiland, that’s for damn sure…

hopefully this would go better than that time Dave Navarro almost joined GNR.

I actually share this little fantasy with you. I’m a fan of Perry’s work in Jane’s Addiction and even moreso in the criminally underrated Porno For Pyros. He’d add a whole new dimension to the VR vibe (less cock rock for sure) and his voice SOARS over anything a band can throw at him.

Strategically, if VR wants to continue being a commercially viable and critically successful band, they need not only a recognizable “big name” singer, but also enough of a curveball that will excite and energize their existing fanbase. Sure, Perry might be a bit of a risk, but he’s got a history of rocking the fuckin’ planet and the (online) bickering will only heighten the anticipation for a third VR album.

Let’s face it: the dude from Spacehog wont excite anyone even if the songs are good. It’s like when Genesis lost Phil Collins and recruited the rather talented singer from the barely known Stiltskin for “Calling All Stations…” The album flopped pretty damned hard, largely because Collins’s departure left such a huge void that it would have taken another superstar to fill. Scott Weiland compensated for Axl quite well, and Perry would do the same.

WHO THE FUCK CARES THIS BAND STINKS.

    Gawd I hope not!

    Dateline New York City:

Shortly after Velvet Revolver guitarist Slash introduced new singer, Sully Erna, Axl Rosenberg killed everyone he knew, and then himself.

  6. Errol says:

I’d be down with that…but would still prefer if OG Janes Addiction reunited to record new material

  7. The Mighty Fucking Quinn says:

    Hahahaha Sully Erna….too much Sammy.

Not for nothing, but while it would be a stretch as far as having him perform the old songs live, and I’ve never been a fan of Perry Farrell, I think it might actually be a fantastic fit.Only time will tell.

  8. Blackthorned says:

This could happen… but it might end up stinking because Perry won’t stick around.

Whatever happens, if Libertad was anything to go by this band need a seriously talented songwriter to save them – not just a great frontman.

  9. Even though i agree with RayRay (Sorry, never could get in to VR, plus i think Weiland is a total knobhead) I think that adding Perry would, as noyokono has said, be an adiquate replacement for Weiland.

  10. Brine says:

If they can come up with music that’s half as interesting as the first Jane’s Add. album….I’m all for it. He’s proven that he can scream over some aggressive music when presented with it. I’d love to see this. Would be WAY more excited to see this than I would be for another VR cd with Weiland.

    He’s a tool anyway.

I was thinkin the same thing today but perry better lose the fairy act and the frickin scarves if he’s gonna go back to rockin I love Perry and could see this happening he has been hanging with slash alot also I remember slash talking about some guy they almost got before scott who he said had a perry farrell vibe that he loved so hmmm maybe Perry also killed the janes reunion this last weekend saying something to the effect that it will happen when theres comercial spaceflight

  12. janez says:

after I posted that it occurred to me that scott has been doing the Perry Farrell imitation for a while so I take back what I said about dancing around like a fairy with those cute little scarves on So FLAME on Perry!!!!!!!!!!! Fag it up baby!!!!!

  13. CJ says:

Does this mean Slash and Perry will be making out onstage?

  14. Juana says:

Since Jane’s Addiction have been throwing in for a good couple of gigs lately in its ORIGINAL LINE-UP, I don’t think that Perry would be stepping in to replace Weiland in VR. I sure the fuck don’t even fancy it to happen, if having to choose in betrween Jane’s & VR. However, as them rumours float a-round and a-bouts, I do believe that a strong option would be MICHAEL MONROE from HANOI ROCKS. Hanoi was the OG band that almost solemnly got it all started back in the day, and paved way for sorts like GN’R etc. The plot gets thicker as news reported some time back that Hanoi is splitting up after decades of passionate rokkkin the shite out. Interesting times, interesting times…

  15. Joe says:

I think Perry Farrel and Scott Weilland are the same performer they do the same dances on stage there both unhealthy and skinny the difference is the voices other then that there the same person i could see velvet revolver and Farrell joining for that reason alone that those two guys are the same person

  16. [...] Revolver” in my head once again. Though I still hold out hope that Vince’s idea of having Perry Farrell front the band comes to fruition, I know in my heart that there’s probably a better chance of Scott Weiland [...]
