POLL: WHAT’S YOUR DRUG OF CHOICE AT LIVE SHOWS?

Hey, it ain’t no secret — metalheads are a bunch of rowdy motherfuckers who like to party hard and make the most of the live show experience. Some booze it up, some get high, some do both, and some do God knows what — and I’m sure there are a percentage that go the straight edge route, too. So what’s your preferred method of intoxication for the live metal experience? Share your crazy metal party stories in the comments.

    Whenever I even think about going to a concert, I always ask myself “What would Ian MacKaye do?”

    Inevitably, I stay home and disband Fugazi.

    When you’re sober you realize what a pack of asshole fools drunk people are. I used to drink it up before/at shows, but then realized many years ago that having to take a piss every other song meant I’d wasted hard earned dough to NOT see the band play.

    So now I drink nothing at shows and in general have a personal three gin max (on the rocks, maybe a squeeze of lime), but usually keep it to two.

    95% of the time i stay sober and dont do any drugs…well actually ive never done any drugs and dont plan on it, its just not my thing.

    as for drinking i just dont do it at gigs because id rather not having to go for a piss every 10 minutes.

    so if im gonna drink i do that after the show.

    if you are pissing every other song or every ten minutes it’s because you have bladder problems and you should probably see a doctor. i personally feel like a a few beers and a joint is the perfect balance to make standing in a pile of a few hundred sweaty dudes bearable while enhancing the the listening experience at the same time.

    @dthrasher: You know nothing about human physiology. The reason drinking a few beers makes you piss a lot has nothing to do with “bladder problems”. Alcohol cuts off the production of ADH (antidiuretic hormone) in the body, causing the body to “think” it needs to release fluids from the system. That’s why a hangover produces dehydration. It’s also the reason why drinking mixed drinks, which are lower in actual fluid ounces, still causes you to pee like a race horse.

    I may have a beer or two, and if it’s hot inside the venue or an outside show I’ll drink plenty of water. Not too mention I learned not to drink too much when I went to Ozfest in 97. I drank way too much and by the time pantera was done playing, I had such a splitting headache from drinking miller lite in the sun and ot drinking enough water.

    To back up Sammy, when I was at Mayhem fest I probably drank about 5, 16 oz bottles of water and two Rockstar drinks. As hot as it was and as much as I was sweating I only had to take a piss once in the 8 hours we were there. If I had been drinking beer it would have been significantly more than once.

    When you get charged $8 a pop for just a cup of watered down keg beer at an ampitheatre, it’s best just to go without and get 2 $4 waters instead.

    @Metalmartyr: Ewww, you drank TWO Rockstar beverages. I bought one of those at Grand Central the other day and couldn’t bear more than two sips. RED BULL 4 LIFE.

    I don’t really have the problem of alcohol or weed affecting my memory to the extent that I can’t really enjoy a show. For the most part I think it allows me to enjoy the show more because bigger crowds cause me to become either claustrophobic or just nervous that a 6’8″ sweaty guy is going to ram his dripping man boob into my face. It’s nice to take away that edge. Plus there’s something about being stoned and/or drunk that really puts me in the mood for metal. I’m always in the mood for metal, but it just really enhances that.

    It’s also a plus to be a little numb when you get elbowed in the face by some douche that thinks it’s cool to spread the mosh pit into an area of people that obviously don’t see it coming. Good times.

    I drink. I smoke weed. Just never at a show. 1.) i like to mosh, being high doesnt serve me well with that level of activity. 2.) i dont mind the other dudes getting trashed, i just like to actually REMEMBER what i saw that night instead of trying to drive home shit faced.

    For one show?
    Two beers, one joint – that’s my perfect doze … anything below oe beyond that causes me to notice way too much nerdy looking guys (at Vienna / Austria area) and I don’t feel really good.

    But I can do shows without any of these, it might not be so intense, fuck it …

    @ Noyo. Normally, no. I wouldn’t drink it. But it was free and I was thirsty and tired at the moment of 4 dollar water. I do like sugar free red bull and will drink a Sobe Adrenaline once in awhile…but look at it this way. Rock star tastes better than monster.

    I’m usually in a for a few beers and cigarettes during a show, and the occasional mixed drink made from the finest malted energy beverages available.

    I also have a college and grad school educated brain that I like to protect from the shirtless dudes looking for someone to punch, but I’m willing to stage dive if Municipal Waste is playing.

    yeah so me and my buddies were drinking wild-turkey and coke out of a two liter bottle while we were in line for a Arch Enemy/Machine head show in L.A. And that Metal Sanaz chick who does those terrible interviews for my space metal and her camera man are talking to fans, for some intense “standing in line” footage i guess. We didn’t know who the hell she was at the time, but she came up to interview us and we were all pretty s-faced. I forgot the question she asked but i think i interrupted her while she was asking it, slurring my words I said “hey, wanna film me punching my friend in the face.” My buddy Phil says “Yeah thad be awesome, he’ll punch me in the face”. Now I was just as surprised as she was when Phil actually volunteered for this, but what the hell, he was wasted and probably wouldn’t feel it. Anyways, she said “Um No” and gave us this shitty look, like we’re a bunch of idiots (which we are), but she could’ve been a little nicer about it. So she left to interview some other jerkoffs, but she was wearing a shirt that said “Pirate Hooker” on it. And i just kept Yelling “PROVE IT” really loud so she could hear me, so that must of got to her because she was gone in about 30 seconds. What a bitch.

    I like to get severely drunk and partake in substances, especially one that is on the list.

    I, too, am grad school educated, so don’t let people convince you that you can’t have a good time and still make something of yourself.

    I’ve been drunk, high or both at every show I’ve ever been to and I remember all of them. Idiots who drink or smoke too much that they can’t remember the show are just that idiots. I’m sick and tired of you straight-edge assholes being all high and mighty about being straightedge. Drinking or smoking doesn’t make you trailer trash it’s about loosening up and enhancing the experience. Drinking several energy drinks and acting like a douche in the mosh pit is no different than getting coked up and being a douche in the mosh pit. Assholes comes in all varieties including straightedge. Don’t be hypocritical especially if you have no idea what you are talking about. If you’ve never drank or been high don’t tell me what it does or doesn’t feel like b/c I already know.

    I think some of you need to go back and re-read the comments. Most of us who voted for abstaining have not passed judgment on those who drink at shows. Rather, we’ve said we don’t like those who drink TOO MUCH at shows and become assholes. Or, become bigger assholes than they already are sober.

    As for me, I have found I enjoy a show less if I’m not sober, plus the physiology of drinking alcohol sends me to a piss-filled, asshole-filled bathroom five times. There is no bigger asshole than a drunk one in a men’s room. Not to mention the fact that I’ve also realized I don’t need it to enjoy the show, don’t like hangovers and am a fitness buff and it fucks with that part of my life.

    Like, last time I went to see Megadeth I had a litre of beer, and that was enough for the whole night… It takes 3ltrs to start getting me wasted.

    I used to get crazy at shows, but I quite drinking and getting high. I still enjoy the show the same as if I was drunk.

    god. thats pretty funny. i dont drink or do drugs…i’m not all “straight edge high and mighty” about it. Just thats how i like to roll. If you wanna drink all night and smoke tons of weed too, thats also cool. enjoy music how you wanna enjoy it. I do!
