DIGGIN’ ON DEPSWA

Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 4:31pm by

Based on the inclusion of one of their songs on some Ozzfest sampler CD (2003, maybe?) Axl and I developed something of a hard-on for the little-known Californian band Depswa (well… Me moreso than Axl). Their one and only major label album Two Angels and a Dream was a collection of excellent alt-metal tinged hard rock songs, a much underappreciated gem that resulted in the band being dropped from Geffen after failing to live up to commercial expectations. Will you guys like ‘em? If you’re tr00er than tr00, probably not, but I urge you to put away your cool-o-meter for one second and see if you can dig.

Depswa still maintain their MySpace page and have even added a few demos of new songs in the past year or so, but they don’t seem to be up to much other than occasional show.

Unfortunately the video for the band’s best song “This Time” does not allow embeds (fuck you, Universal!), but “Not Responsible” is a heavier number anyway. Enjoy

Wow i forgot all about these guys. I saw them open for Mudvayne and Taproot a really long time ago. They weren’t bad and the cd was decent let me see if i can dig it back up.

This song kinda made the coffee in my stomach gurgle.

Was expecting more atypical “it’s fringe so we fucking love it” and that’s mostly what I got out of this, it was nice to see an obscure band mix things up with some stop and go along with actual singing though, and of course you can’t have a video make any kind of sense.

This isn’t hard rock by any stretch of a mile… This is nu-metal. Even without a label, I think it sucks, to be honest.

I have their major label album. The singer is my like 3rd or 4th cousin or something

I like ‘em. They’ve got kind of a Chevelle feel to them but, with more substance.

This is one of those “dead bands”. I love going back three or four years and digging out bands that are either no longer toghether or are so far off the radar that no one knows when they put out a single. I was digging through my CDs the other week and found Dust for Life. Anyone remember those guys? I’ve been getting down to that CD for a week now.

reminds me of deftones in a cool way.

Ive got a buddy whose big into these guys. He got the album way back when and ive given it a spin. Its not too bad. Kinda yeah, like Deftones, I dug it.

  • The Mighty Fucking Quinn

Wow!Saw these dudes at the first show I ever went to when they opened for Cold and Finger Eleven. Not bad, but never got that much into em.My lady dug em so I picked her up the album. We actually have it sitting in a pile of shit on top of our mini-fridge in the bedroom.

I don’t think this stuff is all that bad, it definitely brings me back to Jr. High/High School when I really dug this type of music. Obviously since then I don’t listen to it as much, but it’s always nice to take a nostalgic trip.

I’ve listened to these guys for a long time but found that they suffer from Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde syndrome. I REALLY REALLY like a couple of their songs (This Time, From The Inside, Two Angels and a Dream), but most of their songs lack the “it” and just bore me. They either arent heavy enough or just get stuck in that crappy chrous mode with no “pop”. Its difficult to listen to the disc all the way through, but I always put the aforementioned good tracks on playlists and stuff.
