NEW METALLICA SONG FOR YOUR MONDAY

Monday, August 11th, 2008 at 9:26am by

Get your arguing gloves on. We’ve finally got the first full song from the new Metallica album Death Magnetic. The song is called “Cyanide” and was played live Saturday night at Ozzfest in Dallas, TX. [YouTube, via MetalSucks reader Sean M.]:

So… thoughts? Kinda sounds most like the Load era to me, but without some of the cheese of that era.

Metallica also announced that mixing for Death Magnetic has been completed, and, realizing the power of the Internet, that all of its songs will be available for download on Guitar Hero the same day of release, September 12. Score one for Metallica in the “smart business move” department (finally).

  • Erin Carter

i dig it, got a few nice riffs in there and its kinda catchy. Not groundbreaking or classic by any means but that one song alone is a 1000 fold improvement over the wholle St. Anger record.

  • Greg

Unfortunately I have to disagree this song is incredibly disappointing. I think the CD cover resembles the pussified nature of the tracks on their forthcoming album. At least they were great once…

  • Brandon

‘Downloadable for Guitar Hero’ usually comes with a price. I’m kind of suprised that hasn’t been mentioned a thousand times over followed by more bitching about Metallica and everything they do…

  • Clark

I thought it was pretty good, not the best, but for sure better than anything off St. Anger/Reload. I was pleasantly surprised, after reading the track listing I didn’t expect much.

  • John

Hey Vinnie, just remember that you endorsed “The Showdown” as being the next slayer…which is like saying My Chemical Romance is the next Cannibal Corpse…asshole

  • b-rad

meh, sounds a lot like that “king nothing” song. it does have a catchy riff, but they use that one riff far too much. james can’t let go of his “lame voice” style of singing. granted, i have no problem with melodic vocals, but he doesn’t do it well! he should really just go back to the self titled era and before style and put some balls back into the music.

  • Dave B.

It’s Ok, but it’s not the Metallica I like.

  • Dave B.

I agree with b-rad, they should sound more like a trash metal band

  • RayRay

First off…this is one song which sounds like shit from youtube. So no one can really tell if the song is any good. Lets wait a few more weeks before we kill Metallica off completely. Secondly, did someone really say “The Showdown” is the next Slayer? thats fucking terrible. Whoever said that should be banned from listening to metal.

  • KyleXY

Not too bad, but not exactly great either. It’s definately not as thrashy as I was hoping. However, I agree with RayRay and will withhold final judgment until I hear the studio version. The audio on here is shit. Perhaps its to my own detriment, but I still have my fingers crossed.

By the Gods, it has a guitar solo! That’s step one in the right direction.

  • JTL

It’s Metallica! They’ve gone from suck to blow!

Well, it is better than anything from St. Anger, but it is square in the Load/ReLoad steaming-pile days.

Their Iron Maiden-esque moment around minute 43 was nice.

My favorite part was the intro before the live footage. Maybe that will be included in the radio edit.

  • Sammy

    1) Yeah, what Erin Carter said.
    2) Like the guitar solo – even has non-wah in a good part of it.
    3) Like minutes 4 and 5.
    4) I wonder what Trujillo looks like when he masturbates. I think we’re lookin’ at it.

  • Sean

Sammy you’re on the wrong kind of blog if you’re wondering what Rob looks like masturbating.

  • Sammy

    @Sean: obviously you’re new here. You’ll see.

  • http://hotmail j-rock

wasn’t a total trainwreck you could actually clearly discern the bass that’s a 1st for metallica and the drums didn’t sound like a bunch of pots and pans ala st. anger

  • http://www.myspace.com/discipleoftorment Rohit

    lol @ sammy

Hmmmm…..I think I rather listen to Metallica fronted by the King playing Merciful Fate

I expected to wholly hate what happened after I hit play. I was excited to see just how awful it would be. I had a bad pun all ready to go. But what they delivered was worse than sucking. It was mediocre.

This is what I hoped would not happen. I can deal with Metallica kicking ass old-school or flat out sucking really really bad. There’s at least a power to that. But mediocrity just leaves everyone flat. Nothing to argue about. I mean, look at the posts above this one. No real arguments about the song. It’s just, “eh.”

And “eh” is way way way worse than “FUCK THIS SONG AND EVERYHTING METALLICA IS OR WILL BE”.

I don’t even want to write anymore.

  • miguel_g(Peru)

I hear a mix od Load, the black album and even a little bit of RTL because of the odd rythm changes trough the song, ande it’s not because Lars is a bad drummer, is because they wrote the song to sound that way.

Face it, everyone had an opinion already of this way before hearing it. To me, it’s a pretty catchy tune and I like it better the more I hear it. No Metallica song, even the ones in Master of Puppets or AJFA, were totally likeable the first time you heard them. Metallica is such a polarizing band that is hard to give an unbiased opinion right now…let’s wait Sept 12.

  • Damotello

I liked it, it’s no “battery” or “dyers eve” but it’s not bad, and I’d imagine it’d quite good when you’re actually watching them live.

Great insight btw, Sammy, I’ll never look at Rob the same again.

  • tyler09

    purrdy good

  • http://www.coreymitchell.com Corey Mitchell

@Sammy: Thanks for the Metallica/MF/King Diamond vid link. Maybe there is still hope for them yet.

Also, I cannot imagine that the King has played in front of such a huge crowd before.

  • Sanfranguns

Kinda catchy and thoroughly average, which still makes it one million times better than 90% of St. Anger

  • kevin

That doesent sound anything like Load, kinda like Justice mixed with Black album.

  • Sammy

@ Corey: I can’t take credit for that link. It was Rohit who linked. btw, King Diamond looked gaunt and feeble.

  • http://www.roxwel.com Pick-Axe Bobby

The King is fresh off of major back surgery. He ain’t gonna be moving around a whole hell of a lot. Plus, he always looks gaunt and feeble. Isn’t that part of the persona?

  • Revrant

    S’Alright.

  • http://cultclassicmoviereview.blogspot.com You Don’t Know Me

Not great but REALLY good. At first, it was just “eh” but the more I listen to it, the catchier it is. Plus those parts where it’s just the drums and bass are the shit (insanely catchy groove!) I’m still waiting to see how the album sounds but this definitely has me a bit more interested in buying it.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rockmamola Rock

I’m a huge Tallica fan and found some good in St. Anger…..thought it was a 75 min jam. Sure the drums were fucked, but for the most part it was what it was…..4 guys in the garage jamming. This track however I think cause of the mix we’ll have to wait for the finished product. Liked the solo, but need to hear the studio version before bashing/loving it.

  • Nate

    guitar solo
    bass breaks
    pretty good riffage

    -not up to full speed
-singing… hmmm not my fav style by james

  • KyleXY

I have to admit: the more I listen to it the more I dig it.

  • chris

i like metallica but i dont have alot of confidence in this album. it sounds decent enough to listen to but nothing to really headbang to. i guess ill have to wait for a studio version to really have an opinion about it.

  • Mike Dean

We are all gathered here today to witness the epic fail/death of one of the most branded, commercial, and greedy bands to ever be followed and have their dicks sucked by thousends of blind moronic minions………Nothing they have produced in the past 18 years has even been close to being considered a album worthy of their pathetic fanboys praise, you guys may now take a seat in the back of the short bus with the other “cool kids” and may God have mercy on your souls…

    Your Adoring Neighborhood Metallica Hater,

    Michael

  • Blackthorned

Unlike some I seem to have realistic expectations – ie I don’t expect a millionaire big game hunter and art dealer to come up with work on par with their creative peak.

But I thought that was memorable for the right reasons, I personally don’t hear the Load era – only in the pace of the song. As someone said it’s more Justice/Black, although it’s odd that Hetfield has said he hears the album as more Ride/Puppets.

  • Ross

This song is a fucking snorefest.

  • http://www.roxwel.com Pick-Axe Bobby

“This song is a fucking snorefest.”

  • miguel_g(Peru)

Well, I happen to really like this song after several listens. Here’s a video of the performace, but with thw audio from the officla show recording (of livemetallica.com) in case someone’s interested.

  • hegster

with some of the great stuff that’s being produced in all facets of metal these days, why do we need this?

also, that’s a fucking HUGE screen above the band formally known as Metallica.

And here it is. I sthll dont care.

  • Todd

WTF is wrong with you people??? St. Anger was an awesome album! It was soooooo far superior to the Load of s**t albums. IMO, St. Anger is right up there with “Master of Puppets” and “And Justice for All”. I LOOOOOVE that album. Like I said, WTF is wrong with you people???

  • Robert

I’ve been listening to Metallica since the mid-80s. I was a HUGE fan of the first three. When the Black album came out I kinda’ figured it was all over – And as the years and lame-o records have come and gone, I still feel the same – A downward spiral for sure. And I think bringing on Turjillo was a big mistake. I don’t know about you guys but I didn’t have high expectations for this song. Lets face it, Metallica is just too fat and happy now-days – Just not enough grist for the creative mill. If you want to hear some good old school thrash with a mix of new and interesting, be sure to check-out the new Testament. Apparently they still remember how to do it right.

  • Ryan

I have heard most of the songs from the new album and most of it isnt too bad if you can ignore james’ failed attempts at clean vocals, there is a 10 minute instrumental song that is good. other than that it is mediocre at best. I just wish i could walk up to metallica and ask “what would Cliff Burton say if he heard you now.”
