JIM ROOT IS TALKING SMACK ABOUT DAVE FORTMAN ALREADY?
Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at 4:30pm by Axl RosenbergSlipknot’s new album, All Hope is Gone, hasn’t even been released yet, and already guitarist Jim Root is expressing dissatisfaction with producer Dave Fortman. During a recent interview, when asked if working with Fortman was a better experience than working with Rick Rubin, Root responded thusly:
“Um, no. Dave Fortman really helped me appreciate Rick Rubin as a producer. Sometimes, hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes it takes another situation to kind of make you look back at a different situation and really see how good you had it, you know? Rick Rubin was able to do things that Dave Fortman could never do. I’m not trying to take anything away from Dave Fortman as a producer. He’s extremely talented. He wasn’t able to get nine people together on the same page and, to me, that’s the most important thing in making a Slipknot record. I guess if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”
Well, that’s about as classy as way as possible to basically say “Fortman sucks” – I mean, hell, Root even says that Fortman is “talented.”
I’d love to know how Root thinks Fortman stacks up to Ross Robinson, who produced Iowa and the band’s self-titled Roadrunner debut; I’d also love to know if Root enjoyed working with Fortman on the last Stone Sour album, when he didn’t have “to get nine people together on the same page,” or if there’s some kind of long-standing issue between Root and Fortman.
In any case, if Root is speaking negatively about Fortman this early in the game, don’t expect Fortman to produce anymore Slipknot albums in the future. But, hey, he still has Evanescence! [Waugh-waugh]*
