JIM ROOT IS TALKING SMACK ABOUT DAVE FORTMAN ALREADY?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at 4:30pm by Axl Rosenberg

Slipknot’s new album, All Hope is Gone, hasn’t even been released yet, and already guitarist Jim Root is expressing dissatisfaction with producer Dave Fortman. During a recent interview, when asked if working with Fortman was a better experience than working with Rick Rubin, Root responded thusly:

“Um, no. Dave Fortman really helped me appreciate Rick Rubin as a producer. Sometimes, hindsight is 20/20. Sometimes it takes another situation to kind of make you look back at a different situation and really see how good you had it, you know? Rick Rubin was able to do things that Dave Fortman could never do. I’m not trying to take anything away from Dave Fortman as a producer. He’s extremely talented. He wasn’t able to get nine people together on the same page and, to me, that’s the most important thing in making a Slipknot record. I guess if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.”

Well, that’s about as classy as way as possible to basically say “Fortman sucks” – I mean, hell, Root even says that Fortman is “talented.”

I’d love to know how Root thinks Fortman stacks up to Ross Robinson, who produced Iowa and the band’s self-titled Roadrunner debut; I’d also love to know if Root enjoyed working with Fortman on the last Stone Sour album, when he didn’t have “to get nine people together on the same page,” or if there’s some kind of long-standing issue between Root and Fortman.

In any case, if Root is speaking negatively about Fortman this early in the game, don’t expect Fortman to produce anymore Slipknot albums in the future. But, hey, he still has Evanescence! [Waugh-waugh]*

*That’s one of those sad trumpet sounds, in case it wasn’t clear.

That’s pretty much how Root and Thompson described it in a recent Guitar World interview.

  4. John says:

this is ironic seeing as how both corey and shawn say that dave was the best one and corey said hed never work with rick again…

He just never got along with Fortman. Everyone knows that Rick Rubin hardly appears in the studio and hardly shares a lot of time with the artists he works.

  7. hegster says:

of course he’s not as good as rick rubin.
i mean c’mon he’s RICK FUCKING RUBIN. the SUPER-PRODUCER of all popular metal/hard rock music. he even managed to make a jay-z song tollerable!

Root whining about Fortman not being as good as Rick Rubin is like comparing a mercedes to a dodge neon, “Don’t get me wrong, the dodge neon is an great car, it just doesn’t have the all leather interior, speed-sensitive stereo volume control, power moon roof, built in XM radio and bluetooth, cooling-heating cup holders, and doesn’t hit 0 to 60 quite as fast. and to me, that’s the most important thing in driving a car.”

  8. T Moody says:

How much does Jim Root like the first week in Billboard charts #1 album status WORLDWIDE?

IF YOU ARE SO CONVINCED THAT THIS WAS BENEATH YOUR STANDARDS IT’S UNFORTUNATE THAT YOU WAITED TO PUBLICLY CRITICIZE SOMEONE WHO HAS WORKED WITH PEOPLE THAT HAVE AT LEAST ENOUGH PROFESSIONAL COURTESY TO HANDLE THE NORMAL RHETORIC THAT COMES ALONG WITH A PROJECT OF THIS MAGNITUDE. YOU MAY ALSO TRY NOT RECORDING IN YOUR HOME TOWN WHERE YOU’RE NOT EVEN SHOWING UP ON SCHEDULED STUDIO TIMES.

SOME PEOPLE ARE MORE INSPIRED BY VIRTUE OF HAVING A NEW ATMOSPHERE, CLIMATE ETC. SOUNDS LIKE THE ALBUM THAT YOU FELT FELL SHORT YOU SHOULD HAVE TAKEN TIME TO COME CORRECT.

PS: GREAT WAY TO BOOST RECORD SALES!

PERHAPS THE BAND SHOULD CONSULT YOU GOING FORWARD; BASED ON YOUR INTERVIEW IT SOUNDED LIKE YOU ARE “THE MAN”.. OH YEAH AND RICK RUBIN

  9. The Inside says:

Whatever Root is a fucking moron. Its quite funny to say the least that Joey Loves Forman and Root Hates him, maybe….. Just maybe I’m going out on a limb here Roots shit writing did not make the album and Joey laid the smack down and now root has his feelings hurt.

Fuck Root, Joey is slipknot. Fortman is absolutely amazing from all the work I have heard. Not taking anything away from Rubin, but whatever. Root a power chord queen.

I talked to Dave Fortman my self, and i asked him about the controversy, and he said that Root just didnt get along with him, and like that guy said earlier, joey laid the smackdown, Dave is a great producer and will get more recognition soon and be considered greater than Rick Rubin, Rick sucks when it comes to working with the band, hes just good at mixing, thats it. Wait for MUDVAYNES new album to come out soon that Dave Fortman produced, so yea, thats alli got to say.

  12. eldest says:

Dear “The Inside”….Root writes a LOT of parts..not to mention that he records a lot of parts that Mick is supposed to play…. Anyway, THEY nly know how it’s been to work with Dave, every impression is different, and Jim got the BALLS to say it in public. God bless him!

  13. WTF? says:

Dave Fortman didn’t produce the last, or even the first, Stone Sour CD.

  14. lucan says:

Concordo com Root, mas msm assim Dave fez um bom trabalho, mas trabalhou com os membros individualmente, e isso não é bom pra banda.
