I personally take listening to things on a musical level, since I have played for a long time. That is what I base my objectivity on. And Metallica will go down as one of the biggest bands in rock history in terms of sales, and money generated, but for those of us who have listened since the beginning. They will go down as WAS a great band and then faltered along the way. Many bands have changed over their years, as pointed out, and many have written great music well into their years, but some have stayed the same and still had great success, like AC/DC. Music is nothing more than a form of entertainment for us listeners, and an outlet for the musicians. It's not a life changing thing, or some mystical enlightenment, just mere entertainment, nothing more, nothing less. I mean hell. Nirvana sold 10's of millions of CD's and their talent level was hardly anything to speak of. No matter what we all think. They will still make alot of money and won't give two shits about what anyone has to say who doesn't like it. That's the bottom line. Well. It’s like any writer trying to write through a writer’s block. The music made me want to bang my head but the vocals and lyrics made me want to puke.
