METALLICA’S DEATH MAGNETIC: BETTER, SHORTER, CUTTED

Apparently some enterprising young audio engineer thought Metallica’s Death Magnetic was too long, so he decided to do something about it. MetalSucks reader Edward H. sent us this link for Death Magnetic: Better, Shorter, Cutted, which features the same songs you’ve grown to love (or hate), only shorter! Most songs clock in around the 4 or 5 minute marks, as opposed to the original which features seven songs over 7 minutes.

We haven’t listened yet, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t!

I actually like the album. People are too big of music snobs to actually admit that its good.

I like most of the stuff I’ve heard on the radio and what-not.. but I just can’t shake the feeling that the sound quality hasn’t changed much from St. Anger. I don’t know if they feel that somehow it’s more raw, or natural.. but it just doesn’t do it for me.

That god damn snare drum will be the death of Metallica.

It’s nice to hear Lars put in a little more work on the double bass though, and thank god for the return of Kirk’s solos.

Haha this is something my buddy would totally do, he loves to make his own ‘edits’ of songs that he feels has pointless parts. After I roll my eyes at him, I don’t usually take the time, unless it’s one of those songs that is supposed to go into the next track or something and I wanna throw it in a shuffle, but that’s combining, not removing.. Like Tool’s Parabola, it was such a tease to build up to the climax at Parabol and then have it skip to something random, fucking hate that shit lol

You should listen to it. Just gave it a spin and must admit, it’s better than the Metallica version. No shit.

To me, the idea of taking 7 minute songs and chopping them down to 4-5 minutes is insulting to me, as a listener. Too many music fans have far too short attention spans these days. Few of the songs dragged on too long from Death Magnetic. Song lengths weren’t the issue — the drums were. If you can fix that, then I might give an edited version a listen. Otherwise, the album is fine, flaws and all.

This is a great idea because pretty much every song on Death Magnetic drags out with some self indulgent guitar solo or repetitive jam.

They basically should re-name this album ‘ear fatigue’

The mix on this is heinous. I’ve heard better from blind and deag first year recording engineering students who’ve never seen a mixer before.

I guess in that way shorter tracks will help, but they desperately need to remix that album. It’s better than LOAD and St. Anger but that’s not exactly a high bar to leap over. They need to understand that wanting a ‘raw’ album comes from the performances not by mixing an album like a bag of shit.

I don’t hold out hope for them to ever ‘get it’ again but I will be the first to welcome them back to the non-shitty band fold if they ever do.

I think you’ve got to remember that this is (more then likely) being sourced from the 128 wma’s that were leaked and has therefore gone through the dreaded process of transcoding. But at the same time, the original mix was fucking horrible.

Q-prime didn’t waste a second taking care of that. It’s no longer available. It’s blocked as being suspect of illegal content. I’m sure you can probably find this version on a bit torrent site now though.

I’ve got nothing against somebody experimenting with a differeet version of the album (Metallica may have though), but IMO one of the great charms of “Death Magnetic” is that the lengthy songs don’t seem overly long.

I had a listen to the cut down version and I didn’t like it at all. I think that the original needs at least 10 good listens to appreciate how good it is.
