GORGOROTH’S GAAHL IS GAY…AND SCARY AS SHIT

This past summer, Axl informed you guys that Gorgoroth frontman Gaahl was gay. I’m here to add that he is also one scary motherfucker.

VBS, the guys who brought you Heavy Metal in Baghdad, have a short form documentary, True Norwegian Black Metal, that features one of the freakiest moments ever captured on film.

This five-part mini-doc is pretty basic when it comes to the history of Norwegian black metal with the usual coverage of church burnings, Varg Vikernes, et al. It also skews more towards a Gorgoroth bio/Gaahl rap sheet as opposed to a tr00 dissection of the black metal scene. Nonetheless, I still believe it is a worthy addition to the library of this still misunderstood, often mocked musical genre.

The freaky moment comes near the last two minutes of Part 5 when the interviewer proves to Gaahl that he is just another mindless sheep who does not listen. Gaahl’s reaction is either scary as shit or pretty fucking humorous depending on your own perception of the man.

    Another creepy moment is near the end of the second clip, when the interviewer asks one of the former drummers if the rumors about Gaahl are true. He starts to say “of course not”, but realizes that yeah, pretty much all of the scary shit you could think of about this guy is true, and leaves it at “Maybe”-which is pretty much a yes.

    I thought my video player froze I didn’t know whether to start laughing or crying in fear when I realized he was quite pissed off and staring in a dead silence for a good minute and a half without blinking.

    I really, honestly, dont understand this man, this genre of metal, and it’s core values. I like to think I am extremely open minded to all types of music and influences but am I wrong to think this shit is just fucking insanity captured in any form possible, being in music, performance, and art. Am I missing something?

    Irrelevant comment, but when I first saw this article, I thought it was this weeks ‘Funny Photo Caption Contest’ (it seems like the MetalSucks editors like using Black-Metal for the most part) and I actually am a Gorgoroth fan.

    I’m not sure whether or not you’re referring to the ‘violence’ that surrounded ‘black metal’…But in case you are, most of the actual church burnings, murders and suicides happened back in the early 1990′s (Oh and also the Norwegian Black Metal Vs. Swedish Death (and even some Finnish bands as well) violence at concerts has ‘settled-down’. In my opinion, I think most of the ‘insanity’ is no longer there, or at best is treated as an art-form and does not manifest in actual deaths.

    That ending is trippy, but the whole thing is pretty cool. I think that if anyone grew up in that enviroment, they would have some social issues(Ed Gein comes to mind). Those paintings dont come from a completely sane person. Maybe he is possessed. WHo knows what you could get yourself into out in the middle of nowhere all the time for your whole life?

    Freaky? More like boring. He just sits and stares. Yawn. I was waiting for a freakout and was most disappointed. Most of these guys are pretenders. They are trying to be like their hero Varg. They are trying to recapture the magic of the early 90s and the Norweigan black metal explosion. They forget they the early 90s was about recapturing the magic of the 80s, and Bathory was anonymous. Who even knows what Quorthon’s real name was? And he didn’t take the shit serious, because he spent half his time making “Viking” music.

    He had a ‘close’ friendship with a fashion designer but I didn’t think anything was confirmed about him being gay – seems unreasonable for everyone to be jumping to assumptions if that’s all there is to it. Not that it matters either way what his sexual orientation is but still.

    BTW: Gaahl’s grandparents shack on the mountain is available as a holiday let – at very reasonabe rates outside of peak season. And pets are welcome which is a bonus.
