I agree on some of the flaws, like the lyrics on a lot of songs and the drums on all of them, and the album could have been more original, but some of his points don't make much sense. "My Apocalypse" is a "Blackened" ripoff? Really? Did you even listen to this song? I mean, other then it having an apocalypse theme, it has hardly any similarities to "Blackened". If anything it has to be a ripoff of a few "Kill 'Em All" tracks. He also goes on and on about Hetfield's voice. I honestly think they did a decent job of tailoring the majority of these tracks for Hetfield's current voice (and visa-versa) to produce an overall sound that worked in it's own way. Judas Kiss I think highlights this (during most parts, parts of the chorus are slightly weak). Yeah, it's nothing compared to his old voice, but it's not coming back, it's time to get over it. Honestly it sounds like TOF and many others are comparing DM too closely to good old 80s Metallica to correctly judge the album on it's own. Too much obsession over the fact the Metallica tried to recreate their old sound and fell short. Yeah, I know, it doesn't compare, but that doesn't mean the songs are terrible and unenjoyable. Imagine if this album was released by some unknown band (and pretend you wouldn't notice it as a Metallica ripoff), I highly doubt anyone would have rated it this poorly under those conditions. It's certainly not a masterpiece, but it's a good, rockin, flawed album. I'd say it falls somewhere in between AJFA and The Black Album. That's just imho. Justice was my first and I worked backwards from there. They were easily the best and most influential metal band of the 80's (US or Europe), and their 1st 4 don't even sound like they're from that era; they're timeless. Although I liked the black album at the time (I didn't know shit), growing older I've hated the Rock era with a passion, and I think Ulrich's a talentless fuck. But I never lost my faith in the band the way many others did. It's called patience, and the wait was worth it. Listening to bands like Opeth, Meshuggah, and Mastodon, I know Metallica's no longer the best band in the world. But Death Magnetic is damn good/great, even with the production flaws (didn't stop Justice from kicking ass). Yes, of course they purposely created an album that's reminiscent of the classic days, cause THEY FUCKING OWED IT TO US. We the faithful deserved this. No, it's not a rip-off of old material. The only exception would be the verse in "End of the Line", which is almost the same as the verse in "Creeping Death". Oh, and "The Day That Never Comes" is modeled after "One" in terms of song structure. But Master of Puppets was modeled after Ride the Lightning practically song for song, but no one in their right mind will call Puppets a rip off. Hell no. The fact of the matter is that these guys are in their 40's. Unlike Slayer, they haven't stayed true to their sound. But with Death Magnetic they've almost completely redeemed themselves (as much as could have been expected), and even at their age they can still tear it up, especially Hammett, who OWNS this CD. Any oldschool Metallica fan who thinks otherwise must've been so disillusioned by the black album, Load/Reload, Napster, and St. Abortion that they vowed to never forgive/forget. D.M. is the perfect balance between their 80's progressive thrash and whatever maturity they've gone through since. There are definitely more talented metal bands out there today, but of those bands there are very few who can back it up with MATERIAL and not sound repetitive or formulaic. And that's a fact.
