Personally, a few ticks aside, I thought all of the “Death Magnetic” reviews were fair and honest, though the above one is the most complete. All that said, I; like many, haven’t cared one iota for anything Metallica has released in 20 years. Up until recently, I sort of forgot how much I used to LOVE Metallica until revisiting tracks available for Rock Band (sans “Enter Sandman”).

As for the comparisons to other bands of the genre, that all goes without saying. Metal has long since passed Metallica by and then some. One only need to listen to the new Intronaut, Burst or any other band to know that. Metal has and will survive, with or without Metallica in tow.

At this point in life, I accept that Metallica will never release a proper follow-up to their 4 gems of old. If “Death Magnetic” was them squeezing out what is left of a once-great band, so be it. Personally, I like the album and think it’s a solid 7 out of 10, being just rough-around-the-edges enough to remind me of the pre-Bob Rock era.

I’ve enjoyed the album so far, give or take a few tracks, but I have to say the Rolling Stones comparison is pretty close to spot-on. And “The Hett”? How the shit did you come up with that?

Cool review with points I don’t exactly agree with. Plus, the line –

‘Death Magnetic should mark the death of the hope that Metallica will put out another album that will stand up with one of their greats’ –

is so far away from truth. Not in the way their new album is better or equal to the Holy Four albums – but in the way that’s like expecting the World Record holder in 100 meter sprint from 1986 to compete in 2008 and still takes WR every time he runs the trek.

That just can’t happen.

And yes – ‘better’ is not a substitute for ‘good’. ‘Good’ is just ‘Good’.

If you hadt been keeping up with their setlists, you’d notice that the only Load-era songs they play are Fuel (which is a great tune) and, on occasion, The Memory Remains or Bleeding Me. They played St. Anger and Frantic somewhat regularly after they put out the St. Anger album, but other than that songs like Dirty Window, All Within My Hands, and Some Kind of Monster only made a couple rare live appearances. Contrary to what you’ve claimed, I argue that clearly Metallica knows they have a very strong back catalog and if songs don’t hold up, they stop playing them live.
